How to Teach My Duck Dog to Look Towards the Sky

Certain breeds of dogs are better suited for duck hunting, and the most popular among them is the Labrador. Other popular dog-hunting breeds are also the Chesapeake Bay retriever, and the curly coated, flat-coated and Nova Scotia duck trolling retriever. But even though these are duck hunting dogs, they will not know how to hunt without proper training. "...Some people assume that it is crucial to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. A number of people could find this interesting but a lot of people could agree that this is a excellent tip to follow. The problem with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to be cautious of them. Ultimately, they would probably depart their pets in order to bring back their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they should take care of and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These tips may be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to perform proper dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of comfortable companionship with your "....

Instructions

    1

Use a ball. Toss a ball in the air and say the command "duck." Repeat the tossing motion once the dog is used to following the ball with his eyes. Always state the command loudly and clearly when you do this.

    2

Get the dog excited about ducks. Place the duck in a cage on the floor in front of the dog, so it will be able to see and hear it. Repeat the same command you taught the dog with the help of the ball. Reward the dog if it will start barking at the duck.

    3

Place the cage somewhere high. This will show the dog that it needs to look up to find ducks. State the command and point to the duck.

    4

Change the position of the cage. Without the dog seeing it, move the cage around a few times, keeping it high above the dog's head. Repeat this until you feel the dog understands it needs to look up when it hears the command "duck."

How to Live With a Neurotic Dog

How to Live With a Neurotic Dog

If your dog is content, laid back and carefree, consider yourself fortunate. Many dog owners are faced with the challenges of living with a neurotic dog, facing problem behavior such as destruction, aggression, pacing, separation anxiety, sensitivity to sounds or extreme fear of ordinary objects. Sadly, many of these dogs are surrendered to shelters, where they may never get a shot at being adopted. Working to modify your dog's neurotic behavior is an investment of time and love that can pay off with a calm and more content pet.

Neurotic Behaviors

Salivating, rapid breathing or pacing are signs that your dog may be suffering from neurosis. He may also be extremely defensive and aggressive when introduced to new sounds, smells, people or objects. He may destroy items at your house when you leave him for the day, or be so noise phobic that he panics or jumps out of a window at the sound of thunder or fireworks. Dogs also exhibit compulsive-obsessive behavior, such as being fixated on an object or digging incessantly out of frustration. Less common neuroses include overeating, drinking copious amounts of water without physical cause or compulsive licking, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual.

Exercise and Stimulation

A young and healthy pup should get 20 to 30 minutes of robust exercise each day, which increases the production of serotonin in the brain and helps relax and boost the mood of aggressive or fearful dogs, according to the Animal Behavior Clinic at the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Go for a vigorous hike or jog with your dog; engage in a game of fetch or even let your dog swim for a half an hour each day. This type of activity tires your dog out. Dogs also benefit from the mental stimulation involved in training. Use positive training methods -- such as treats and lots of praise -- to reward good behavior. Use the commands frequently and consistently.

Health and Medication

Take your dog to the vet to rule out any physical cause of neurotic behavior. An imbalanced thyroid can cause extreme nervousness, while a brain tumor or hydrocephalus could cause your dog to exhibit strange behavior. Ask your vet about medication, which can help alleviate aggression or neurotic behavior. Drugs such as Reconcile and Clomicalm have been approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Using these drugs in conjunction with behavior modification and training can make a significant difference in your dog's behavior, according to the website Vetinfo.com.

Socialization

Socialize, socialize, socialize. Many common dog behavior problems are rooted in lack of socialization as a young pup. When dogs are left alone for long periods of time without companionship, they become unhappy, which can manifest in destructive digging, barking or damaging household property. "...Many individuals believe the reason is crucial to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. Some individuals might find this exciting but a lot of people might agree that this is a top notch tip to follow. The issue with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to take care of them. In the end, they might get away from their pets in order to reestablish their old lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they have to handle and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These hints can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to perform correct dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of comfortable a relationship with your ".... The dog isn't trying to be vengeful or make his owner angry; he's simply acting out nervous or aggressive energy or fear that his owner has left him. If you must leave your dog for long periods of time, consider taking him to doggie daycare for interaction or schedule play time with other dogs. Invest in a crate or keep your dog confined to a small space in the house for short periods of time to minimize any damage from neurotic behavior and to give the dog a sense of calm.

Desensitization and Behavior Modification

Desensitization techniques can be effective in reducing neurosis in your dog, with the help of an animal behaviorist or a book on the subject. Introduce the fear -- whether it's a noise or an object -- to the dog at a low level of intensity. If the dog remains calm, reward that behavior with a treat or praise, and continue exposure and reward until the dog understands that he's not threatened. Behavior that relates to separation anxiety is usually the worst within the first few minutes you leave the house, although the dog can become hyperactive as you're getting ready to leave. Use a technique called "timed departure," in which you get ready to leave, pick up your keys and walk out the door. Begin with a one- or two-minute departure, then return and act as if nothing is out of the ordinary. The dog will see that you aren't abandoning him; that you will return. Build up to increasingly longer periods of time away from the home.

How to Stop a Dog From Chasing a Cat Using Training Aids

How to Stop a Dog From Chasing a Cat Using Training Aids

When a puppy enters a new home, it may immediately begin chasing the household cat. Chase instincts are natural and caused by something called prey drive. Some breeds, such as the golden retriever, chase for fun. Other breeds, such as terriers, were bred to chase and kill. It creates havoc within a household and causes feline stress. However, you can train dogs that chasing is inappropriate behavior using patience, consistency and positive reinforcement. Dogs soon learn you are the pack leader and be content to follow. "...Many individuals assume the reason is essential to get dog training tips preceding to getting their pets. Some individuals could find this exciting but a lot of people may concur that this is a wonderful tip to follow. The problem with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be aware of them. Finally, they would probably depart their pets in order to retrieve their past lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they should handle and if they have the time to train their dogs. These suggestions can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to carry out suitable dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of peaceful friendship with your "....

Instructions

    1

Position the head collar with straps around the nose and neck just behind the ears. It is not a muzzle; the dog should be capable of opening its mouth normally. The dog may try to pull off the head collar if it is something new. Eventually the head collar will become more natural and fit comfortably.

    2

Attach the leash to the head collar. The leash attaches to a loop below the chin. You will find the head collar and leash can be effectively used to prevent a dog from pulling toward certain objects, including a nearby cat.

    3

Command the dog to sit. Hold a treat in your open palm just above the dog's nose, then move that hand toward the dog's back. The dog will sit attempting to focus on the treat. The open palm is used as an appropriate hand signal and should be accompanied with a "sit" command. A treat and praise provide positive reinforcement for the new sit behavior.

    4

Teach the dog to maintain a sit position. You can return the dog to a sit position using the open palm hand signal and "sit" command each time the dog stands or attempts to walk away. The dog should be able to maintain a sit for 10 to 20 seconds before proceeding to the next step.

    5

Introduce the cat to the dog from a distance. A friend or family member should hold the cat as you observe the dog's reaction. When the dog shows excitement or stands, the dog should be returned to a sit position using the sit command and hand signal. Remember to provide positive reinforcement each time the dog sits.

    6

Bring the cat closer to the dog when the dog learns to maintain a sit position. This step could take several attempts. The dog is beginning to learn a behavior foreign to the chase instinct. It requires patience and consistency.

    7

Reward the dog with a treat and praise each time the sit position is maintained around the cat. Dogs respond positively to treats and verbal praise.

    8

Be patient. Chasing other animals, particularly cats, is natural behavior for dogs. You are asking the dog to learn a new behavior. Certain breeds could learn this behavior more quickly than others.

    9

Continue training until you are comfortable having the dog and cat together. Any chase activity should be stopped immediately and the dog brought to a sit position. Positive reinforcement in the form of praise with an occasional treat will allow the dog to learn proper behaviors.

How to Make All-Natural Dog Deterrent

How to Make All-Natural Dog Deterrent

As much as you love your dog, there are activities that you don't want it to do. You may want to keep it off your furniture, or to stop it from digging up your lawn or plants. Keeping it out of the garbage is a must, and stopping your puppy from chewing the shoes in your closet is critical. Dog deterrents come in many forms, but store-bought products may stain fabrics and contain chemicals that could harm your dog. Make your own all-natural deterrents and keep your dog from getting into trouble.

Instructions

Using Citrus

    1

Buy a small bottle of pure Citronella oil. This is a product made from Lemongrass that, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency, "has been used for over 50 years as an insect repellent and as an animal repellent" (See References 1). "...Many people think that it is essential to get dog training tips earlier to acquiring their pets. A number of people might find this interesting but a lot of people might recognize that this is a really good tip to follow. The issue with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to take care of them. Ultimately, they would depart their pets in order to retrieve their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they have got to deal with and if they have the time to train their dogs. These tips will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to execute suitable dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of relaxed friendship with your ".... It has low toxicity and is also used in anti-barking spray collars. Find it at your pharmacy or a store that sells essential oils and natural remedies.

    2

Mix four fluid ounces of citronella oil with two pints of water and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the formula daily on and around the areas where you don't want the dog to go daily. Do this for at least a week. Dogs generally recoil at the scent of citrus.

    3

Use the citronella mix as a safe repellent for other dogs when you are out walking your pet. If another dog shows aggression, a squirt from the spray bottle aimed at any part of the dog is likely to repel it. Try to avoid the dog's face unless the situation is serious, as it may sting the eyes.

Other Deterrents

    4

Sprinkle small amounts of finely ground white or cayenne pepper in the areas you want the dog to avoid. A dog follows its sense of smell to find the garbage or to investigate a spot where it has previously soiled. If its nose encounters pepper along the way, this will make it sneeze and burn its nostrils; it will be unable to identify the scent it is looking for and will move on to other activities.

    5

Use your dog's own feces to stop digging behavior. Burying a portion in a flower bed that has caught its interest will prevent it from digging. Fill holes it has dug in your lawn with feces and then cover with soil and grass. A dog will be able to smell the feces through the covering and its natural aversion to having contact with it will prevent it from digging further.
