How to Keep Your Dog From Getting in the Trash Can

How to Keep Your Dog From Getting in the Trash Can

Many dog owners are familiar with the unpleasant task of cleaning up garbage strewn on the floor. Dogs raid trash cans if they are bored, hungry or just curious. Several items in the trash --- foil, string, bottles, grapes, bones, raisins, chocolate and onions -- might be lethal to some dogs. Put some firm rules in place, and prevent the dog from gaining access to your garbage.

Instructions

Prevent Your Dog from Stealing Food

    1

Keep your dog away from temptation; leave your food out of its reach. Store leftovers in airtight containers, and leave them in the refrigerator. "...Many individuals believe that it must be essential to get dog training tips earlier to having their pets. Many people might find this interesting but a lot of people might concur that this is a excellent tip to follow. The problem with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be aware of them. In the end, they would probably get away from their pets in order to bring back their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they have to handle and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These suggestions can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to execute suitable dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of relaxed friendship with your ".... Keep cookies and breads in closed containers. Do not feed a dog your food when you are at the dinner table.

    2

Feed your dog several times a day. Serve small portions of food. Dogs often raid trash cans out of boredom. Your dog probably won't rummage in the trash if it is active and appropriately exercised. Provide your dog with plenty of toys to keep it busy.

    3

Discipline your dog immediately if you see it jumping on the counter top or table. Discourage a dog that nudges a trash can out of curiosity; address the animal with a firm tone and move it away. Avoid punishing or pushing your dog. Never use a muzzle to prevent the dog from stealing food; it can restrict breathing and the ability to drink water.

Keep the Dog Away from the Trash

    4

Deter your dog from accessing the trash can by using a pet-repellent vinyl mat that emits a weak electric charge. Place the repellent mat in front of the trash can; the dog receives a mild shock when it steps on the mat. This deters the dog from approaching the trash can.

    5

Investigate a garbage trap for dogs and other pets. This device is similar to a mouse trap, but will not hurt your dog in any way. Place the trap upside down in the trash can. The trap is propelled into the air -- and makes a loud snapping noise -- when a dog touches it. This startles the dog, significantly reducing the appeal of the trash can.

    6

Keep the trash can outdoors or in the garage. Purchase a sturdy trash can -- with a lockable lid that your dog cannot open -- if it must be kept in the house. Keep the trash can inside a securely closed cabinet.

Gentle Leader Easy Walk Instructions

Gentle Leader Easy Walk Instructions

Leash pulling, one of the earliest dog training challenges, is also one of the most difficult to bring under control and injuries to owners who fail at the task are common. In addition to causing back, neck and arm damage, dogs that strain or bolt while on a leash can easily pull you off your feet, fracturing bones. The Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness by Premier, a re-think of the traditional "martingale" leash, is a cheap, painless and effective way of discouraging pulling. Instead of attaching to a collar, the leash is affixed at mid-chest so when the dog pulls, the straps tighten, distributing tension evenly across strong chest and shoulder muscles.

Instructions

    1

Slip the shoulder strap over your dog's head and clip under the forelegs. The ring connecting shoulder and belly portions should sit just above and behind the dog's shoulder.

    2

Tighten the shoulder strap to fit snugly. A finger's width of space between the dog's body and the harness is about right. When correctly adjusted, the harness should follow a vertical line.

    3

Adjust chest straps to the same degree of tension. Find your dog's breastbone by gently feeling the lower front of the chest. Make equal adjustments to each side of the chest strap so that the D-ring for the leash is centered. When in place, the chest strap should be almost parallel to the ground and at right angles to the shoulder and belly straps.

    4

Clip the leash to the D-ring. Hold it loosely so that it forms a J-shape when hanging down.

    5

Walk your dog, correcting tugging with gentle pulls. Try to keep the leash loose, and don't over-correct too forcefully. "...Some people consider that it must be essential to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. Lots of people could find this fascinating but a lot of people could concur that this is a very good tip to follow. The condition with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be aware of them. Ultimately, they would give up their pets in order to bring back their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they have got to deal with and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These tips can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct suitable dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of comfortable a relationship with your ".... It may take a little time for your dog to get used to this new restraint, particularly if the dog usually drags you along, but it will soon learn that while wearing the harness, the most comfortable place to walk is right beside you. Rewards in the form of praise and treats speed up the learning process.

What Are Some Things You Can Do to Make Your Puppy Calmer?

What Are Some Things You Can Do to Make Your Puppy Calmer?

Puppies are bundles of energy. They need time to run and play, as well as quiet time, just as we all do. Being proactive in the training of your puppy will not only teach him obedience, but also will give you tools for calming him when he gets overly excited. Giving your puppy regular outlets for his energy will make him a calmer pet, less destructive and more pleasant to be around.

Owners

A puppys mother is his pack leader, determining when he eats, plays and how far he can wander from her. "...Lots of individuals believe the reason is crucial to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. Many people may find this fascinating but a lot of people might agree that this is a excellent tip to follow. The challenge with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be aware of them. Finally, they would probably depart their pets in order to bring back their past lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they need to take care of and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These hints will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to execute suitable dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of peaceful friendship with your ".... When you bring home a new puppy, you become the pack leader. It is your task to be in charge of him or he will try to become the leader. Keeping your puppys day organized, with time to eat, play, sleep and exercise, helps to keep him calm. A puppy is sensitive to your anger, frustrations and tension. He can read your facial expressions and body language. Be calm and firm as you establish yourself as the pack leader.

Training

Obedience training helps to keep an excitable puppy calm. Training helps your puppy understand that you are the pack leader. It also gives you a means of controlling him at those times when the unexpected happens. When you are out for walks, take along treats. When other dogs approach, get his attention and maintain eye contact. Reward him with a treat for calming down. Teach your puppy to accept restraint, something puppies and dogs do not like. Practice restraining him for short periods at a time so that you can do this when he becomes upset.

Activities

Providing your puppy with outlets for his abundant energy helps to keep him calm at other times. Take your puppy for walks on a leash each day to get him used to being around other dogs and people. Allow him to have a loose leash at times for a degree of freedom. Schedule play time with other puppies at your home or at a doggie daycare. Interactive food toys give your puppy plenty of activity when you are not available. Place some of his food or a treat inside the toy to keep him occupied while you are away. Throughout the day be sure that your puppy has crate time, play time, exercise and cuddling time to keep him contented and calm.

Massage

We all know the calming effects of a massage. Give your puppy regular massages to help him relax. Massage his back or chest in a circular motion with firm pressure. Avoid massaging his hind legs since many dogs do not like this. Massage him a few minutes several times a day. When your dog becomes upset from the sound of fireworks, an approaching storm or at the vet, lay him down and gently massage his neck and rub your hands down his spine several times to calm him.

Clicker Techniques in Dog Training

Training a dog can often be a challenging task. Clicker training is a method of training that uses positive reinforcement to encourage a dog to perform a specific task or trick. Once the basics of clicker training are learned by you and your dog, you can work toward teaching your dog almost any trick you want. Before you begin a clicker training program with your dog, it's important to understand some of the essential techniques to get the best results out of the training.

Positive Association

Dogs respond well to clicker training because it is a form of positive reinforcement. When they hear the click, they know they've done something correctly. For the dog to realize the clicker represents something good, you have to associate it with that good thing, such as praise or a treat. Do this by offering a treat and clicking the clicker at the same time. After repetition, the dog will respond positively to the click alone. When the dog correctly performs a task, such as sitting, and you click the clicker, the dog will realize he has done something good and is being praised, which will encourage him to perform the task again. The clicker works better than actual praise because it's quicker and can be delivered several times, as the dog correctly begins and ends the task.

Using the Clicker in Conjunction with Treats

If you want your dog to perform a simple task, such as lying down, you can often wait for the dog to perform this natural behavior on its own and then click when it does it. However, not all behaviors can be learned this way. For harder tricks, you can influence your dog's action by using treats in addition to the clicker. For example, if you want your dog to roll over, you could hold a treat, low to the ground, in front of your dog, and urge him to roll over by moving it in a circular motion. When the dog performs the trick, you give it the treat and click the clicker, repeating the process until the dog correctly performed the trick with only the clicker.

Repetition

Repetition is key in any type of dog training, including clicker training. By repeating the steps of learning a certain trick over and over, you make sure that your dog understands what is being asked of it. Repetition of each new trick, and the positive clicker reinforcement, cements each behavior firmly in the dog's mind.

Adding Cues to Clicker Training

Once your dog correctly performs a task or trick with the clicker several times, you can begin adding cues to the tricks to let your dog know that you want it to perform a specific task. As the dog begins to perform the task, click the clicker and repeat the cue word. "...Some people assume that it can be necessary to get dog training tips prior to acquiring their pets. Lots of people could find this exciting but a lot of people can agree that this is a really good tip to follow. The problem with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be aware of them. Finally, they would probably depart their pets in order to retrieve their past lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they have got to consider and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These tips will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct correct dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of relaxed companionship with your ".... Repeat this process many times until the dog understands what you want, and then begin using just the cue word, without the clicker.
