How to Get a Chihuahua Rat Terrier Mix to Stop Chewing Everything Up

Chewing is a natural dog behavior. Even smaller dogs, such as chihuahua rat terrier mix, can make quick work of treasured possessions. Dogs don't chew out of spite, they shred items with their teeth to quell boredom, alleviate pain, express anxiety or fear, or to get their owners' attention. Frustrated dog owners can take steps to eliminate these behaviors. There is no one surefire method to keep a chihuahua rat terrier mix from chewing everything up -- it's a lifestyle change that requires a combination of methods for success.

Instructions

    1

Dog-proof your house. Remove all objects that could be harmful if chewed. Store tempting items, such as shoes, priceless family heirlooms and socks, in a drawer or closet inaccessible to the chihuahua rat terrier mix.

    2

Provide a frozen wet wash cloth. If your chihuahua rat terrier mix is younger than 6 months of age, it may be teething. A frozen wet washcloth is a soothing outlet for teething-related chewing.

    3

Supply the dog with inedible toys to chew. "...Many people think that it is crucial to get dog training tips preceding to getting their pets. Some people may find this exciting but a lot of people could concur that this is a excellent tip to follow. The problem with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to take care of them. Eventually, they would abandon their pets in order to reestablish their old lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they should take care of and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These tips could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to conduct suitable dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of relaxed companionship with your ".... Examples include natural bones, synthetic bones, rubber toys and plush toys. Puzzle toys make your dog manipulate the treat to get a food reward. Learn your chihuahua rat terrier mix's preferences and supply toys that keep the dog chewing for an extended period of time.

    4

Add variety with edible chew toys. Rawhide bones, pig's ears and bully sticks provide your chihuahua rat terrier mix with a tasty outlet for instinctual chewing behaviors.

    5

Alternate new toys every few days. Dogs get bored with the same toys day after day, and boredom can lead to chewing behaviors. Rotate toys to get the most use out of them and to keep your dog from chewing everything up.

    6

Be consistent. Don't allow your dog to chew on any household item that isn't a toy designated for doggy use. Sending mixed signals to your chihuahua rat terrier mix is counter-intuitive to stopping the destructive behaviors.

    7

Spray coveted items with a chew deterrent spray. Deterrent sprays taste bitter and discourage chewing. Give your dog a sample of the spray on a cloth towel. Allow your chihuahua rat terrier mix to chew the towel, learning the scent and taste of the deterrent spray.

    8

Don't allow your chihuahua rat terrier mix free reign of the house. When you catch your dog chewing on a forbidden item, correct it with a firm verbal cue, such as the word "no." Take the object away and replace it with a chew toy. Allow your dog small bits of unsupervised time as it learns what is -- and isn't -- an acceptable chew toy.

    9

Confine your dog to a crate or kennel when you aren't home. Dogs are den animals in nature and seldom destroy areas that mimic the safety of a den, such as a crate or kennel.

How to Train a Dog to Stop in the House

Teaching a dog the stop command has many different uses. Once they reliably know how to stop, you can end behaviors such as jumping up, chewing, house-breaking accidents and other bad behaviors.

There are many different methods to train a dog and they center around two main principles -- negative reinforcement or punishment for bad behavior and positive reinforcement or rewarding good behavior. Positive reinforcement, such as clicker training, has been found to be very effective and is recommended by trainers.

Instructions

    1

Practice with the clicker on your own. If you don't have an actual clicker training device, you can use a spaghetti sauce lid or any lid that has an air seal that will make a clicking sound when pressed. It is necessary to get your timing down before you begin training your dog. The premise behind clicker training is that the immediate sound when a dog does the right behavior reinforces the lesson and creates a reference point for the dog.

    2

Wait for the dog to exhibit the behavior you want to stop. To teach the stop command, the dog must first understand that what they are doing is wrong and that stopping is the right thing to do.

    3

Say "stop" in a firm, loud voice. Yelling is not recommended, but the dog should be able to tell by your tone that you are displeased with what they are doing. This tone should be different from your every day tone that you use with your dog.

    4

Click the clicker as soon as the dog reacts to your voice and praise them. "...Most people assume that it can be necessary to get dog training tips preceding to having their pets. Many people might discover this fascinating but a lot of people might concur that this is a excellent tip to follow. The problem with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be cautious of them. Ultimately, they could get away from their pets in order to retrieve their past lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they have to take care of and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These tips may be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to perform suitable dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... This creates the reference point mentioned earlier. By praising them when they stop on command, you are positively reinforcing their behavior.

    5

Award the dog a small treat for stopping. This helps further reinforce the good behavior because most dogs are food driven and will respond to treats in a positive way. This is a reward for the dog for accomplishing what you asked them to do.

    6

Repeat the lesson. Whenever the dog does something they should not, say "stop," click the clicker when the dog complies and give them a treat. It may take a few repetitions before the dog reliably stops what they are doing on command.

    7

Introduce affection as a replacement for treats. As soon as the dog begins obeying the stop command on a regular basis, start replacing the treats you give them with affection such as a rub on the head. Ideally, you want the dog to respond to affection rather than food.

    8

Phase out the clicker and treats entirely. After the dog has made progress, they should be stopping on command. At this point, you can stop using the clicker and the food treats and rely solely on the command and affection when the dog obeys it.

    9

Reinforce the lesson as necessary. Dogs can forget their training and it may be necessary to go back to the clicker and treat until they remember their training. This is particularly true for puppies with short attention spans and short memories.

What Electronic Devices Work for Training Dogs?

What Electronic Devices Work for Training Dogs?

There are electronic devices available for dog training, whether you wish to train your dog better obedience, boundaries, good manners or agility. There are two kinds of electric dog training devices, those that send your dog a small electric pulse to deter unwanted behavior and those that use electricity as a means of augmenting your training techniques. Devices that send an electronic pulse are not harmful to dogs because the intent is to get dogs' attention rather than hurt them. Be sure to buy devices appropriate for your dog's size.

Electronic Pulse Collars

Electronic collars send a short electric pulse whenever the remote control button is pushed. Electronic collars are used to punish bad or unwanted behavior in your dog and teaches your dog to respond quickly and correctly to voice commands. Once you have your dog's full attention, it can be easier to teach specific lessons and gently punish behavior.

Electronic Sound Emitting Collars

Owners who are uncomfortable with the idea of using electronic pulses as a method of behavior control can still use electronic collars to stop bad behavior. In addition to pulse-emitting collars, there are also electronic collars that use high-pitched sound to deter unwanted behavior. The sounds emitted are beyond human hearing range but are unpleasant to dogs. These collars can be used to train dogs and to stop unwanted behaviors like excessive barking.

Anti-barking Devices

Electronic devices can also be used to correct behaviors that are otherwise difficult to control. Since dogs often bark when they are unhappy, excessive barking usually occurs when owners are not around to stop it. "...Many people assume the reason is crucial to get dog training tips prior to getting their pets. Some people might find this fascinating but a lot of people may agree that this is a very good tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to take care of them. Finally, they would depart their pets in order to reestablish their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they need to take care of and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These guidelines will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to carry out proper dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of peaceful companionship with your ".... Electronic anti-barking collars send small electric pulses or vibrations when a dog barks. They are not harmful and are safe to use even when dogs are unsupervised. The fences can also be set up to teach dogs areas to avoid, such as pools or gardens.

Electronic Fences

Even the most well-behaved dogs are sometimes distracted by squirrels. Having your dog run loose is not only dangerous for your pet, it can also be potentially harmful to other animals or even people. Electronic fences teach your dog where their home boundary lies while allowing them to roam off-leash within the bounds of the fence.

Agility Training Devices

Many of the agility exercises dogs learn require complex jumps or navigation through obstacle courses. However, there are some exercises that rely heavily on timing and those are the exercises where electronic touch boards can be used. Rather than guessing whether your dog successfully touched a goal during contact training, electronic devices can signal a successful touch and will record when the touch was made.

How to Train Your Puppy to Weave

How to Train Your Puppy to Weave

Weave poles are one of the most difficult agility obstacles for dogs to master. Constructed of a set of 12 poles arranged in a straight line, the dog must enter the poles with the first pole on the left side and wind his body back and forth between all 12 poles. A number of methods exist to train your puppy to weave. The "V," or weave-a-matic, method is the least stressful on the growing bodies of young puppies.

Instructions

    1

Buckle a flat collar around your puppy's neck, and clip a six-foot leash to the ring on the collar. The leash keeps the puppy from running off and helps you guide it through the weave poles during training sessions. Keep the puppy's favorite toy in your pocket as a reward when the puppy responds to your commands.

    2

Divide the weave poles into two groups of six, and lay the poles flat on the ground as shown in Resource 1. "...Some people think that it can be essential to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. Lots of people might discover this interesting but a lot of people may concur that this is a very good tip to follow. The problem with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be cautious of them. Ultimately, they would probably get away from their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they need to take care of and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These tips could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct appropriate dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of comfortable companionship with your ".... The poles need to be staggered so that as you raise them off the ground the dog has room to weave between them. There should be 18 inches between the left and right group of poles, and 12 inches between each pole in the group.

    3

Hold the leash in one hand, and ask the puppy to walk down the channel created by the two groups of poles, with the first pole near the puppy's left shoulder. Tell the puppy "weave" at the beginning of the poles, and praise and encourage the puppy to run quickly through the channel. Give the puppy the toy as a reward when it reaches the end of the poles. Continue running with the puppy until you can drop the leash and the puppy runs down the middle of the poles without guidance.

    4

Ask the puppy to sit and stay at the entrance to the channel, and toss the puppy's toy to the opposite end. Say "weave" in a cheerful voice and release the puppy to get the toy. Building speed through the weave poles is important to a quick run, and the more excited the puppy is for the toy, the faster it will run. Work the puppy in two or three 15-minute weave pole training sessions each day until it is speeding down the channel without stepping outside the poles.

    5

Raise each pole approximately two inches off the ground, and push it into the soil to form a wide "V" shape. Leash the puppy and walk it down the raised channel, letting the puppy explore the poles and step over them as he moves down the channel. Run the puppy down the channel a few more times, increasing the puppy's speed with each pass through the raised poles until the puppy is running through the poles without tripping or stepping outside the channel.

    6

Move the poles up another two inches during each consecutive training session, until the poles are vertical and the puppy is bending its body through the poles as it weaves. Gradually raising the poles teaches the puppy to negotiate them at his own pace, which reduces burnout and the likelihood of popping out of the poles early. If the puppy slows down or leaves the poles before completing the weaves, repeat steps 4 and 5 until the puppy is weaving consistently.

How to Make a Dog Track

How to Make a Dog Track

Training a dog to track involves directing long-ingrained instincts once used by dogs to hunt in packs. Tracking involves combining several kinds of scents to develop a path toward a goal or object. While tracking is easiest to teach when a dog is a puppy, older dogs can still learn this skill with a little extra time and practice.

Instructions

    1

Take your dog to a park or any extended grassy area early in the morning to begin training. It is best to start about 5 or 6 a.m. while the air and ground are fresh.

    2

Order your dog to sit or lie still. Cut a hot dog into several inch-long pieces. Work a piece of hot dog into the grass using your shoe so the scents of the grass and hot dog blend, also transferring to your shoe. Walk a straight line away from this point and your dog, dropping a piece of hot dog every 7 feet. At 20 feet, place your dog's toy in the grass with a piece of hot dog resting atop it.

    3

Free your dog from its sitting or lying position and let it begin finding the first hot dog point. Encourage your dog by saying "search" or "find the toy!" Enjoin your dog with "good dog" if it begins to follow the trail, but don't distract it.

    4

Wait for your dog to find the toy and congratulate it if it does. If your dog doesn't succeed, begin the process again until it does. If your dog successfully tracks the toy, retrieve the toy and have your dog stay. Begin the process again in a new direction, taking 10 or 15 steps. This will reinforce this new skill your dog is beginning to acquire.

    5

Increase the distance and complexity of the trails over a series of days and weeks, practicing in the early morning. Use curves and include various familiar objects along the way, training your dog to ignore all but the scent trail, the hot dogs and the final object. Place a hot dog only on the last object. "...Many people think that it must be essential to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. Lots of people might find this fascinating but a lot of people may recognize that this is a excellent tip to follow. The issue with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be aware of them.
