How to Train a Beagle to Hunt Rabbits

How to Train a Beagle to Hunt Rabbits

Beagles are bred to hunt rabbits and other small game, but this does not guarantee that a beagle will hunt properly without training. The experts at Beagles Unlimited warn that even with training some dogs will not be interested in tracking rabbits. Taking the time to introduce a beagle puppy to the practice of hunting is the best way to find out. Early scent training can begin when a puppy is very young, but the dog should not be introduced to a rabbit until he is four or five months old.

Instructions

Basic Scent Training

    1

Scatter a few pieces of hot dog around a yard, then let your 4 to 6 week old beagle puppy smell and find the hot dog. "...Many individuals assume the reason is crucial to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. Many people could find this exciting but a lot of people could recognize that this is a really good tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be cautious of them. Eventually, they would get away from their pets in order to retrieve their past lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they have got to consider and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These tips may be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to execute suitable dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of comfortable companionship with your ".... This helps introduce the puppy to scent tracking.

    2

Drag a hot dog through short grass to leave a scent trail of at least 10 or 15 feet, dropping small pieces of hot dog every three feet. This will teach the beagle to follow a longer scent trail.

    3

Introduce the dog to the scent of a rabbit around 8 to 10 weeks of age. Playing fetch with a sock rubbed on the fur of a tame or freshly killed rabbit will help the dog associated the action with the animal's scent.

    4

Place a large, tame rabbit inside of a cardboard box and let the dog investigate on its own. This will increase the dog's interest in the rabbit, especially if it can smell and hear the rabbit in the box but can't get to the rabbit.

Training the Dog with Live Rabbits

    5

Tie the 12 to 14 week old beagle puppy to a tree using a leash. Let the tame rabbit run around the yard, and chase it yourself to demonstrate to the dog the excitement of chasing a rabbit.

    6

Set the dog loose once it seems interested and excited and let it chase the rabbit. Remove the rabbit if the dog gets aggressive, or when the rabbit becomes tired. Letting the dog chase the rabbit through the bushes can encourage the dog to track it using only scent.

    7

Let the puppy run with older and experienced rabbit-hunting dogs, if possible, so it can learn how to pick up dropped scent trails. A slower running dog, such as an older female beagle, is recommend because she will be slow enough for the puppy to follow.

    8

Acclimate the dog to the sound of gunfire. This is best accomplished by firing your gun at a distance and slowly getting closer to the dog. Banging loud metal dishes together near the dog will also accomplish this goal.

    9

Take the beagle puppy out on its first hunt with the rest of the pack. The dog should be ready to hunt once it's no longer gun shy and is accustomed to tracking rabbits by their scent. The more experienced dogs will teach the puppy anything else it needs to know.

How Can I Stop My New Puppy From Whining?

How Can I Stop My New Puppy From Whining?

Bringing home a new puppy can be a rewarding, exhilarating experience. Unfortunately, for many pet owners this joy can quickly turn to frustration when the puppy constantly whines. This whining is generally caused by separation anxiety, and it generally occurs when the puppy feels abandoned by its own litter and its new found pack. This whining will continue well into adulthood if the puppy is not trained to be quiet when it is separated from the family.

Instructions

    1

Exercise the puppy daily. This exercise could come in the form of long walks or sessions of fetch at the local park. A puppy that is quiet will be less likely to have the energy to whine.

    2

Give the puppy attention throughout the day, but only when it is quiet. Many puppies will whine simply as a way to garner attention and should not receive this attention when whining.

    3

Offer the puppy a toy to chew on once it begins to whine. This toy will offer the puppy a distraction that will keep it from concentrating on whining.

    4

Place a piece of freshly worn clothing into the puppy's sleeping area at night, if the puppy is whining after hours. Many times the smell of an owner will help soothe the puppy to sleep.

    5

Clap your hands together loudly near the puppy's ear each time it begins to whine. "...Lots of individuals consider that it must be essential to get dog training tips preceding to acquiring their pets. Lots of people might discover this fascinating but a lot of people may recognize that this is a excellent tip to follow. The challenge with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be cautious of them. Ultimately, they might give up their pets in order to retrieve their past lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they have to deal with and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These hints will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct suitable dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... The puppy has sensitive ears and will begin to associate whining with this unpleasant sound.

    6

Fill a plastic water bottle full of water and each time the puppy begins to whine, spray the water near the puppy's face or on its back. This experience will be undesirable for the puppy. Never spray the water directly into the puppy's face as this could bring about a negative response.

How to Stop a Boxer Dog From Pulling on a Leash

How to Stop a Boxer Dog From Pulling on a Leash

The Boxer is a type of dog that loves to explore and socialize with other dogs and people. It can be difficult to train the boxer as they get easily distracted. Boxers will need plenty of praise as you try to train them right from wrong. One of the simplest training techniques is preventing your pet from pulling on the leash and dragging you around. Train with consistancy and give them plenty of positive reinforcement during and after the process.

Instructions

    1

Eliminate distractions. When you are training your boxer on your own, make sure there are no other dogs or people around during the time you plan your training session. This isn't a must, but it will help you train your pet that much faster.

    2

Place the thumb of your right hand through the loop of the leash at the end. Loop the leash half way and hold it with your right hand. Keep your dog at your left side as you hold the leash with your left hand close to your body. Use the word heel to begin to move, starting with your left foot. This will keep the boxer close to you and have more control if he/she decides to start pulling on the leash.

    3

Use your left hand as your guide. Walk straight and in circles to get your boxer used to walking close to you. Using your left hand that is closest to your dog, move it forward when starting to walk and pull closer towards you as you begin to turn or stop.

    4

Give positive reinforcement. Give the boxer a treat when successful or use words such as "good boy/girl" or "very good" to encourage the dog to continue to listen.

    5

Stay consistant. Hold the leash the same way every time you walk your boxer. If you are not consistant, your pet can get out of control and start pulling on the leash. As boxers are curious pets, they tend to put their heads down and sniff. Get their attention by make a sound, whistle, or by saying their name. "...Many individuals believe the reason is essential to get dog training tips prior to acquiring their pets. Many people could find this exciting but a lot of people can agree that this is a excellent tip to follow. The situation with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be aware of them. Ultimately, they might get away from their pets in order to reestablish their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they have to handle and if they have the time to train their dogs. These suggestions can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to perform correct dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of relaxed friendship with your ".... This will help them stay focused as they walk.

What Are the Qualifications of Raising a Pug Puppy?

What Are the Qualifications of Raising a Pug Puppy?

Pugs are well known for their recognizable facial features and playful personality. This type of breed is best for owners who want a dog that will be good with children given the small size and youthful personality of most pugs. When considering if a pug is right for you, make sure you do your research and see if this breed of dog will fit your personal pet needs in your home.

Access to a Good Veterinarian

Having a pug requires a reliable veterinarian that can take care of various health problems that might arise for your puppy. One of the most common aliments for young pugs is demodectic mange, which is a type of skin mite that requires the expert care of a veterinarian. "...Some people consider that it can be necessary to get dog training tips preceding to getting their pets. A number of people might discover this interesting but a lot of people can recognize that this is a top notch tip to follow. The situation with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to take care of them. Eventually, they might give up their pets in order to retrieve their old lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they have to consider and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These tips will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to carry out proper dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of comfortable a relationship with your ".... Health problems relating to the head are common with pugs because of the smooshed-in nature of their face. Pug puppies can have health issues early on relating to their head shape, such as pinched or undersized nostrils.

Have a Cool Indoor Area Available

One major problem for pugs in general is that they can overheat if they are left in warm, humid weather for more than 30 minutes and die. Pugs are not able to properly cool off like other breeds of dogs due to their facial structure. Therefore it is crucial to keep your pug puppy indoors in an air-conditioned space if the weather is too hot outside.

Have Patience When Training

It is important to have patience with your pug puppy when you are teaching them basic training. Pugs have a short attention span and get bored easily, so teaching them requires a bit of time and patience. It is important to potty train them from an early age and use different training techniques for the same behavior, so there is a higher chance that they will pay attention and commit it to their memory.

How to Use a Dog Heeling Stick

How to Use a Dog Heeling Stick

The heeling stick is most often used when training hunting dogs. The heeling stick, which resembles a riding crop, is a semi-flexible rod that is about three feet long. It is used after a dog has learned basic obedience. The trainer then uses both the leash and the heeling stick to reinforce the basic commands. Eventually, the trainer only needs the heeling stick to correct the dog, which is done with gentle pressure or light tapping. It is important to remember that the heeling stick is a guide for the dog and should never be used to threaten, frighten or hurt the dog.

Teach your dog to be comfortable with the heeling stick. First let him see you carrying the heeling stick, then rub it along your dogs sides and back. Praise your dog while doing so.

    2

Hold the heeling stick in same hand as the side on which your dog is heeling. For instance, if your dog is heeling on your right side, carry the heeling stick in your right hand. Rest the heeling stick on your shoulder when you are not guiding your dog with it.

    3

Use the heeling stick to help your dog maintain the correct heeling position. For example, give your dog the heel command. If your dog moves ahead of you, tug on his leash and gently tap him on the chest with the heeling stick. If your dog lags behind you, gently tap him on his bottom until he moves so his shoulder is at your knee. If your dog strays to the left, gently tap his left shoulder until he moves close to your leg. Praise your dog.

    4

Apply the heeling stick to help your dog obey the sit command. Tell your dog to sit. If he dawdles, gently pull up on his leash.
