How to Evaluate Dogs for Finding Lost Persons

How to Evaluate Dogs for Finding Lost Persons

While many search and rescue dogs are mutts, not just any dog is suited for finding lost persons. When choosing a search and rescue dog to train, you must consider three basic things. First, the environment in which the dog will be working will affect which search specialty will be your focus. Also, training takes over a year, so start with a puppy or very young dog. Second, the puppy should have a suitable temperament. Dogs that are aggressive to other people or dogs will not work well in the field. Third, and most importantly, the dog needs a high-play drive and should be easily trainable.

Decide what type of search you will be focusing on. Air-scent searches are for finding any person in a given area. In trailing-scent searches, tracking dogs are given a particular scent to trail on the ground. Some trailing dogs use both types of searches to find a person. "...Most people consider that it can be necessary to get dog training tips preceding to getting their pets. Some people could find this fascinating but a lot of people could agree that this is a excellent tip to follow. The situation with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to take care of them. In the end, they would get away from their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they need to consider and if they have the time to train their dogs. These hints may be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct correct dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of comfortable friendship with your ".... Disaster searches require dogs to work in enclosed spaces and on unstable surfaces. Cadaver dogs detect human remains. Water searches take place around water or underwater. In an avalanche, dogs will need to search under snow. Different breeds of dogs will be suited for the various environments. For example, an avalanche dog should have a thick coat. Bloodhounds work well for tracking, but they cannot last outside in the cold for hours because of their thin coats.

    2
    Litter of Puppies

Find a puppy or young dog that is healthy, curious and friendly to both humans and other dogs. Ask the breeder or rescuer about the dog's general health. Bang on a pan loudly and note how the dog reacts. A small response is fine, but a puppy that reacts strongly or becomes uncontrollable won't work. Seek out the dominate dog of the litter or puppy pack. The dog that is pushing around the other puppies and taking their toys may be your best bet.

    3
    Puppy with High Play Drive
    Puppy with High Play Drive

Evaluate whether the dog has a high play drive. The dog must naturally enjoy, for example, chasing after a ball when you throw it, even to the point of obsession. You want a toy-motivated dog because playing with that toy will be the reward after finding the lost person. Ask the breeder or rescuer if the puppy has learned any tricks and how long the training for that lasted. Find the puppy that is the first one to the food dish. Dogs that are food-motivated and toy-motivated are easier to train and are more likely to be successful search and rescue dogs.

How to Train My First Coonhound Pup

Coonhounds are reliable dogs. Whichever breed of coonhound puppy you plan on buying, it will make a perfect family dog when you socialize it from puppyhood. They are good with kids when they are kept in their presence from the start. But keep in mind that coonhound dogs are innately barkers and hunters. They track opossums, raccoons and bobcats by sniffing the scent of their prey and then chasing it into a bush or up a tree and barking until the hunter arrives. Training your puppy may be time-consuming, but it is a rewarding task.

Instructions

    1

Teach your coonhound puppy the basic obedience -- sit, stay, come, lie down, or heel. Your coonhound puppy should follow your commands when he is off the leash. Do not threat or force, but give praises and treats. You can learn the basics of how to teach obedience to a dog by enrolling at any local dog obedience training classes.

    2

Make your puppy acquainted with the outdoors. Take him for walks through woods or fields for a few hours. This will make the coonhound puppy familiar with the wilderness and will hone his obedience.

    3

Take your coonhound puppy to a shooting range in a crate. Fire your rifle in the opposite direction of the crate so as to allow your puppy to be accustomed to the sound of the gunfire. This is necessary for any hunting dog.

    4

Begin raccoon training when the puppy is 12 weeks old. Start training with the help of a fresh road kill raccoon carcass, or make an alternative by applying raccoon scent to a stuffed animal. Let your puppy play with the scented stuffed animal or raccoon hide and reward him with a treat when he shows interest in it. "...Many people believe the reason is necessary to get dog training tips prior to getting their pets. Many people might discover this interesting but a lot of people could concur that this is a top notch tip to follow. The issue with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be aware of them. Finally, they would probably depart their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they have got to handle and if they have the time to train their dogs. These tips could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to execute proper dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... But hide it before your puppy loses interest in it.

    5

Carry the fresh carcass or the scented object through your yard and place it in a tree. Follow a winding path so that your puppy learns how to track the animal in the tree. Do this every day, and make the path even more difficult for him as time passes. Give a treat to your puppy every time he finds the animal.

    6

Place the live raccoon in a box trap and let your puppy investigate it. If your puppy is excited about being this close to a live raccoon, he is ready for the next level of training.

    7

Release the live raccoon and give it a head start before you set your puppy on its trail. Follow the bark of your puppy. You will find him with the treed raccoon. Continue sessions like this with your coonhound puppy to make him perfect at the art of tracking raccoons or scents of these animals.

    8

Take your puppy for a real hunt when he is eight months old with older and more experienced coonhounds.

How to Train Your Dog Not to Bark or Run Away

How to Train Your Dog Not to Bark or Run Away

Dogs, like humans, communicate to express contentment, loneliness, alertness and fear, among other things. Dogs, however, communicate by barking or running away, depending on the stimulus they encounter. With some patience and concentration, you can train your dog not to bark or run away when it comes across distressing or potentially upsetting things like fire engines, lawnmowers, vacuum cleaners or even the doorbell. Over time, you can teach your dog to react calmly and trust you rather than barking and running away.

Instructions

    1

Speak softly and calmly when your dog is startled and starts barking or tries to run away. Avoid yelling or screaming at your dog, as it may make your dog more frightened or uncomfortable.

    2

Figure out what stimulus causes your dog to bark or run away. Re-create this instance as best you can. Keep your dog on a short leash and have treats in your pocket. Play a recording of a sound or make a noise that bothers your dog and, when it barks, command your dog to sit or lie down. Speak softly and gently, but reassure your dog. When you respond calmly, your dog will learn to as well.

    3

Ignore your dog when it barks for no reason. For instance, puppies and bored house dogs frequently bark simply from boredom or for attention. Do not reward this behavior by acknowledging the dog. As with a child in a car who keeps asking, "Are we there yet?" the best course of action is ignoring him.

    4

Train your dog to bark on command using the "Speak" command. To do this, hold a treat in front of your dog's nose, say "Speak" and create a stimulus like ringing a doorbell or knocking on a door. When the dog barks, praise it and give it the treat. Once the dog gets a hang of this step, move on to the next one. It may take days, weeks or even months, depending on the intelligence or stubbornness of your dog.

    5

Teach your dog the "Quiet" or "Enough" command. "...Many individuals consider that it must be necessary to get dog training tips earlier to having their pets. Some individuals might find this exciting but a lot of people may recognize that this is a really good tip to follow. The condition with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be aware of them. Finally, they could get away from their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they have got to handle and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These suggestions could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct correct dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of comfortable friendship with your ".... Tell the dog to speak without making any noise and withhold the treat until the dog stops barking as you say "Quiet" or "Enough." Be consistent with what word you choose. Then, you will be able to quiet your dog down when it barks or gets upset.

    6

Take your dog to a professional animal trainer if the problem gets out of hand.
