Potty Training Dogs for Dummies

While it is never a fun task to housebreak a dog, leaving your dog untrained is even more difficult for everyone involved. Inside or Outside: The First Potty Training Decision

Dogs trained to use papers or pads inside the house are "housetrained." Housetrained dogs know where to potty inside the house and use those areas exclusively. Should those areas become extremely soiled, however, housetrained dogs may select inappropriate places to "do their business."

Dogs trained to go potty outside are "housebroken." Housebroken dogs signal their owners when they have to eliminate, usually by whining or scratching at the door. Ignoring signals leads to avoidable "accidents" inside.

Sometimes a combination of these methods is helpful; that is, training your dog to signal that it has to potty and providing a place to potty inside to prevent accidents.

Help your puppy succeed at pottying in the right place. Keep it confined to a crate or a puppy-proof area, especially when you are not home. Take your puppy to its potty area immediately after eating or drinking. Offer water frequently during the day, but do not provide free-choice water until training is complete. How to Use Happy Legs to Train Puppies

Part of the challenge of showing a dog is training it to stand with its legs perfectly positioned. The dog should hold this pose while the judge examines it, and it should walk naturally into this position anytime it is being shown. Happy Legs is a training device that is designed to make this process easy and painless for both the dog and the owner. It works on dogs of any age and can be especially effective for puppies.

Instructions

Put the Happy Legs stilt box on a flat, level surface. You can use the floor or ground for larger dogs, and set the box up on a grooming table for smaller breeds.

Open the Happy Legs box. Adjust the stilts as needed to fit your dog. These should be positioned so that your dog will be posed the same as it would be in the show ring.

Lift your puppy carefully, and dangle its legs over the stilts. Keep the pup supported with your hand. Let it feel the stilts and get the idea of placing its feet on them. Puppies under 8 weeks old should be placed on the stilts for just a few seconds at a time, once a week. As your puppy gets older, you can gradually allow it to stand on the stilts but continue to support it.

Put a collar on your puppy and begin to use the collar instead of your hand to help the puppy stay in place. Slowly reduce the amount of support you give the pup until it is able to stand on the stilts without help. How long this takes will depend on the size and coordination of your dog.

Brush your puppy and open its mouth while it is standing on the stilts. Keep it fun, so the pup will learn that standing still while being handled is a game it can enjoy. Offer bait but make sure the dog doesn't move while eating.

How to Identify a Dog That Is Eager to Please

Dogs are intelligent creatures with personalities that run the gamut from shy and sweet to gregarious, compulsive and aggressive. While purebred dogs have common inbred character traits that enable organizations such as the American Kennel Club to predict the behavior of many breeds, all dogs are different. One of the most desirable temperament traits to look for when getting a new dog is his desire to please you. You can usually identify eager-to-please characteristics through a general set of behaviors.

Look for a happy, energetic and alert dog that isn't shy or aggressive. Observe whether the dog willingly accepts his order in the pack or family without hesitation or aggression.

Observe your dog's responsiveness to commands. Look for a dog that is willing and quick to learn new concepts and commands. For example, a dog that is eager to please you might jump into a sudsy bath because you have given the command to do so and not because he likes water.

Evaluate your dog's response to happy, high-pitched praise and attention as a reward for training. A dog that is eager to please will need little more than praise to thrive in training sessions.

Observe the dog's attention span and sensitivity during training sessions. Watch to see if the dog gets bored easily. Terriers, for example, often don't do well in training or obedience because they have been bred to be instinctively independent; they typically do not care whether or not they please their owners, according to Dr. Stanley Coren, Professor of Psychology at the University of British Columbia.
