How to Assert Dominance With Your Pit Bull

How to Assert Dominance With Your Pit Bull

Over the past several years, the media have portrayed pit bulls as an aggressive, dangerous breed. However, aggressiveness tends to be a result of purposeful training or illness and is not an inherent trait of the breed. "...Most people believe that it can be necessary to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. A number of people could find this fascinating but a lot of people might concur that this is a wonderful tip to follow. The situation with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to take care of them. In the end, they might depart their pets in order to retrieve their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they have got to consider and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These tips can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct proper dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of comfortable friendship with your ".... As with any puppy, asserting your dominance as the house leader will help provide your pit bull with a sense of direction and make the training process simpler. With dominance training, the ultimate goal is not to strike fear into your animal, but to teach him that there are enforced behavioral boundaries within the home.

Instructions

    1

Start your dominance training as early as possible. As puppies, pit bulls are highly receptive to commands and are quick to adopt habits or fall into routines. Though retraining is possible, the process is much simpler if your pit bull is under 1 year old.

    2

Cradle your pit bull's face gently and make eye contact with him. With a locked gaze, repeat your dog's name in an even tone of voice. Speak to him for several minutes in this way daily to assert your voice and gaze as a dominance signal.

    3

Handle your pit bull frequently if his size allows it. Exposure and rubbing of the legs, paws and belly will help teach your dog that he plays a subservient role in the household. Sprawl your pit bull on his back, extend both legs one at a time and massage his stomach regularly.

    4

Set territorial boundaries within the home. Make some furniture, such as your favorite chair or the couch, completely off-limits to your pit bull. If the dog crosses one of the boundaries, remove and gently reprimand him. In time he will learn and respect the areas that you have asserted dominance over.

    5

Avoid feeding your dog from the table or regularly giving him scraps. Make a clear distinction between your food and his by feeding him in the garage or a separate room, and only after you have eaten. This establishes pecking order, a principle which is instinctual in pack animals such as dogs.

How to Train Dogs for Personal Protection

How to Train Dogs for Personal Protection

Training dogs requires patience and perseverance. Domesticated dogs are loyal companion animals. With proper handling you can teach them to protect you and your home. They can alert you when there is danger and attack if necessary. While certain larger breeds such as German shepherds and rottweilers may be more suited for these duties, smaller breeds such as terriers can be taught to be protectors without being overly aggressive. Simple rewarded commands can make your pet or the pets entrusted to you vigilant canine protectors.

Instructions

    1

Begin with a puppy -- preferably under eight weeks old -- and play tug of war with a stick and toy. "...Lots of individuals assume that it is crucial to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. Many people could find this fascinating but a lot of people can concur that this is a excellent tip to follow. The problem with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to take care of them. In the end, they would get away from their pets in order to retrieve their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they should handle and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These hints will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to conduct proper dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of peaceful companionship with your ".... As the dog's jaw grows you can gradually replace the toy with a protective arm sleeve that you will wear.

    2

Reward the dog with praise and a treat for clamping down and holding the object. At first, it may grow tired and walk away or become distracted. With practice it will stick with the game for longer periods of time.

    3

Help the dog identify the tug-of war-game with a verbal command such as "tug" and a hand command such as a chopping action. Play the game only when you use these two commands.

    4

Blow a whistle to indicate when the game is over. Walk away, dropping the toy or lowering your arm. Teaching the dog to release its grasp is very important. Depending on how developed the dog's prey instinct is, you will have to repeat this step regularly to ensure success.

    5

Work with someone who does not live with you or an experienced instructor. Begin to transfer the skills learned in its tug-of-game to provide defense in simulated scenarios. Use the same verbal and hand commands and rewards.

    6

Quit playing the tug-of-war game and only have the dog clamp down and exert its attack skills in the simulated scenarios. These can range from someone breaking into a home or making personal attack from behind.

What Is Leash Correction for Housetraining?

What Is Leash Correction for Housetraining?

Leash training is an excellent way to introduce your dog to acceptable indoor behavior while curbing unwanted behavior gently and effectively. Constant wearing of a collar and leash or harness and leash will help your dog become comfortable with the feel of the contraption, and it will allow you to correct inappropriate behaviors quickly before they become unwanted habits.

Choose the Correct Leash

A dog should be introduced to a leash and collar system as soon as you bring him home. The collar should fit snugly but not be too tight, leaving enough slack for you to fit two fingers comfortably between the collar and the dogs neck. Puppies and rescue dogs may be more comfortable with a body harness than a collar because they may feel threatened by the feel of something around their neck. Choose a leather or nylon leash that is at least five feet long, but no longer. Your dog will drag the leash around the house as part of training. While you want it to be long enough for you to tether it to you or to grab it quickly for correction, you dont want the leash to become caught on or wrapped around furniture. In addition, you should always have your dog with you at all times during house training. He should not be allowed to roam the house unsupervised while wearing his leash.

Establish a Routine

A dog should have a regular routine for eating, sleeping, playing and outdoor elimination. A routine will help you gauge when your dog is hungry and when he needs to go outside. This approach makes the housetraining process easier because you and the dog know what to expect and when to expect it. "...Many individuals think the reason is essential to get dog training tips preceding to acquiring their pets. Some people may find this interesting but a lot of people might agree that this is a wonderful tip to follow. The issue with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be aware of them. Ultimately, they would probably abandon their pets in order to bring back their old lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they need to consider and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These hints may be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to perform correct dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of relaxed friendship with your ".... Dont confuse the dog with elimination time paired with outside play time. Puppies in particular will be so excited to go outside that they forget to eliminate.

Always Pair Leash With Elimination

Always lead the dog on his leash to the outdoor area where you want him to eliminate, and offer praise and attention when he performs. Make it a fun event, grabbing the leash and saying outside! in an excited voice. You may consider hanging bells on doors in your home and showing your leashed dog how to ring them when its time to go outside to eliminate. In this way, the dog will associate the leash, the door bells and your excited voice with going outside. If the dog does not eliminate, take him back inside, keep him on his leash and try again every 10 minutes.

Interrupt Inside Accidents

If you catch your dog eliminating inside, say outside in a firm tone, take him by the leash and immediately go outside. Praise and reward your dog when he eliminates outside, even if the accident started inside. Clean accident areas with a non-ammonia odor elimination spray to avoid repeat performances.

Use Leash Training in Other Ways

Indoor leash training is effective not only for housebreaking but for curbing other unwanted behaviors. For example, a puppy that chews on shoes or furniture can be redirected via his leash to an appropriate chew toy of his own. A dog that barks when strangers come to the door can be held in a heel position on his leash and instructed to sit. A dog that jumps on people or furniture can be placed gently but firmly into a sitting position while you say, no. Never hit your dog with his leash or jerk him by his leash, which will invalidate all appropriate leash training and make your dog fearful of you.

Dog Breeds That Bark Excessively

Dog Breeds That Bark Excessively

Dogs bark to communicate, and any dog can become an excessive barker. Certain breeds are more prone to this irritating habit than are others. For a quieter canine companion, choose breeds that are less likely to bark, and use training techniques that keep your pet under control.

Breeds to Avoid

Terriers, herding dogs and beagles are likely barkers as being vocal is part of their breeding. Yorkshire terriers, cairn terrier, fox terriers and West highland white terriers are among the biggest barkers, note authors Benjamin and Lynette Hart in "The Perfect Puppy: How to Choose Your Dog by Its Behavior." Many small dogs, such as the Chihuahua, silky terrier, Pekinese, miniature and toy poodles, bark a lot, too.

Quieter Breeds

Dog breeds that do not bark often include bloodhound, golden retriever, Newfoundland, Akita, rottweiler or Chesapeake Bay retriever, say the Harts. Basenji is the only dog breed that does not bark. They do produce a yodelinglike sound, notes the American Kennel Club. Most dogs will bark at some point in greeting or to protect their territory.

Why Dogs Bark

Any breed of dog may be conditioned to bark excessively for attention, or due to anxiety and separation anxiety. "...Most people think that it must be necessary to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. Many people might discover this interesting but a lot of people could concur that this is a very good tip to follow. The issue with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be cautious of them. In the end, they would probably depart their pets in order to bring back their past lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they should take care of and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These suggestions can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to execute suitable dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of comfortable a relationship with your ".... Dogs bark in response to unfamiliar stimuli, such as cars or other dogs, or to defend their territory. A dog may bark to simply greet you or another animal. Compulsive barkers that just keep going are usually responding to other dogs they hear in the neighborhood, even those relatively far away.

Discouraging Barking

Avoid rewarding a dog for barking. If a dog successfully barks for treats, attention or a walk, it will engage in such behavior regularly. If you frustrate your dog by confining it to a small kennel or tying it up restricting movement, you might invite barking. If you have a dog that does not usually bark but suddenly starts, it might be suffering from pain or an illness. For help with incessant barking due to behavioral issues, consult a professional dog trainer for assistance.

Use commands to instruct the puppy to stop begging for food. When your puppy starts whining or begging for food, use vocal commands such as "no," "sit," or "go" to train your puppy to stay away from the table. Puppies adapt to commands quickly especially when the commands are reinforced with consistent actions. Confining your dog by using a leash, a kennel or a gate is another option for teaching your puppy that he is not allowed to beg at the dinner table. Confinement, however, does not teach the puppy to self-regulate his behavior and should be used in cases where the puppy's behavior is unrelenting.

    3

Feed the puppy when the meal is over. Puppies have a pack mentality. They intuitively and naturally desire to be dominated by their owners. When a puppy is fed after his owner, he is told and he understands that his owner is the leader. A puppy will not seek food from his leader. This tactic may seem counter-intuitive, especially if a puppy is hungry when the family is eating, but it takes into account a puppy's lineage.
