About Service Dog Training Tools

About Service Dog Training Tools

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, a service dog is "any guide dog, signal dog, or other animal specifically trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability." These dogs are trained to help people who are blind or deaf or who suffer from other conditions that cause disability, including autism, seizures and arthritis. Training begins at a young age, and a variety of tools are used in the process.

Collars and Leads

A basic collar is used for most training, although a bell collar is useful for a blind owner's dog to wear around the house. A Martingale collar provides greater control over the dog for an owner with disability, without choking the dog.

The lead is also an important training tool. "...Most people consider that it can be crucial to get dog training tips earlier to having their pets. Some people could find this interesting but a lot of people can recognize that this is a top notch tip to follow. The problem with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be aware of them. Ultimately, they would depart their pets in order to bring back their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they should take care of and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These tips can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to execute correct dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of relaxed friendship with your ".... The service dog is trained to accept the type of lead its handler will require. A seizure patient uses a wrap-around lead to help maintain his hold on the dog in the event of a seizure. An arthritis patient uses a double-handed lead as this gives better control with weakened arms and hands, making it possible to keep the dog close without reeling in the lead. The short lead is used to teach the dog to walk close to the handler.

Working Vests

The service dog wears a vest for several reasons. Identification is necessary for full access in public places, and a vest displays the dog's registration patch or suitable wording. Most sellers of service dog equipment only sell vests to owners of registered dogs in order to avoid abuse of the identification. Vests may have pockets in which the handler can carry critical items so that they are easily accessible. Some vests are lightweight for everyday working, some have pockets or saddle bags, and others are padded to double as coats in cold weather. Backpacks are also available, in which the dog can carry up to 15 percent of its body weight, avoiding the need for the handler to carry a bag.

Harnesses

Guide dogs for the blind and dogs that assist with limited mobility are trained to work in harness. A common harness comes equipped with a handle that the owner can hold on to be led or supported by the dog. Most harnesses are made of soft, fleece-lined leather that is comfortable for the dog, and have reflective striping for use in low visibility. They are equipped with loops to which different leads can be attached, so that the harnesses are interchangeable. A heavy duty pulling harness may be used with a strong lead in situations where the dog needs to pull a wheelchair. A heavy duty mobility harness, used with a stable bridging handle, can provide stability and assistance in walking to a handler with limited mobility.

Other Tools

A pull trainer is used to teach a dog to pull open drawers for its owner. Use of a clicker followed by food treats, or a toy that is given for a short game, are tools commonly used to reward the dog when it has successfully completed a task.

How to Break a Chihuahua From Play Biting

How to Break a Chihuahua From Play Biting

Dogs use their mouths in place of hands and often play bite, and Chihuahuas are especially guilty of this activity. Play biting is a normal behavior between dogs and part of their social activity. "...Many individuals consider that it can be necessary to get dog training tips earlier to having their pets. A number of people might find this fascinating but a lot of people could agree that this is a top notch tip to follow. The condition with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be aware of them. Eventually, they might abandon their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they should handle and if they have the time to train their dogs. These hints will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to conduct appropriate dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of comfortable friendship with your ".... Play biting however can indicate to the dog that biting behavior is acceptable, which may advance to actual biting at some point if the Chihuahua becomes distressed. Deter this behavior as early as possible for the best results. Have patience and use the proper techniques and your Chihuahua will begin to understand you do not allow biting of any kind.

Instructions

    1

Avoid activity with the Chihuahua that sends a mixed message such as rough housing or placing your hands near the dogs mouth regularly.

    2

Keep your hands off-limits as a chew toy. Puppies will bite because it feels good, but do not encourage them to mouth your hand, give them an alternative. When the puppy begins to bite on your hand pull it away and use your word for no, then give them the item you want them to bite instead.

    3

Limit tug of war or play that encourages biting such a waving a toy in front of the Chihuahua and indicating the dog should snatch it from your hands. All activity involving your hands with the dog should be calculated and not include giving the dog an invitation to bite at something you are holding.

    4

Indicate that the behavior is not acceptable. Your dog may have established control in your relationship and needs to be reprogrammed that you are in charge. If the Chihuahua play bites withdraw your hand immediately and give your command for "No" loudly and firmly. If the behavior continues withdraw from play, and possibly even isolate the dog depending on the severity of the insistence on the dog to play bite. Make it clear play is acceptable, but not play biting.

    5

Refrain from rewarding play biting behavior and learn to recognize it when it occurs. The biting may not just be your hand but also the leash, a toy or other item you are holding. If the Chihuahua grabs at something in your hand such as the leash or toy and you have not indicated the dog should do so, correct them immediately and take the item away. If they retain control of the item it reinforces that play biting is a way for them to gain a reward, because they have gained the item they wanted.

    6

Practice training and have patience. Continued work with your dog, consistency and making sure you correct unacceptable behavior each time it occurs are key to ending unwanted play biting in your Chihuahua.

How to Housebreak an Adult Labrador Retriever

How to Housebreak an Adult Labrador Retriever

Labrador retrievers are medium-sized, high-energy dogs. They make excellent pets for families or for individuals with moderate to high activity levels. The properly trained and socialized Labrador puppy learns rules about living indoors, including where it is supposed to eliminate. However, some rescued Labradors need housebreaking (see References 1), while others have lost bladder and bowel control after an accident or illness and need to be retrained. These dogs benefit from being treated as if they have never learned the basic rules of house training. You can house train your adult dog from square one.

Instructions

    1

Choose a crate for your Labrador. Your dog should be able to stand comfortably inside its crate and easily turn around (see References 1). An extra-large dog crate that measures 42 in. long by 28 in. wide by 28 or 29 in. high is suitable for your adult Labrador (see References 2).

    2

Select a place for your dog's crate away from the day-to-day house traffic. However, the crate is a place for your dog to relax and have some quiet time, so it should also be accessible to your dog at all times.

    3

Acclimate your dog to its new crate. If your dog resists entering the crate or howls or whines if locked inside for more than a few minutes, then you must make the crate a pleasant place to be. "...Many people think that it must be crucial to get dog training tips earlier to acquiring their pets. A number of people may find this exciting but a lot of people could concur that this is a very good tip to follow. The issue with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to take care of them. Finally, they would probably get away from their pets in order to reestablish their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they need to deal with and if they have the time to train their dogs. These tips may be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to perform appropriate dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of peaceful friendship with your ".... Feed your dog in its crate, provide it with toys or recreational natural bones, and cover the floor of the crate with comfortable bedding.

    4

Confine your dog to the crate any time that you are sleeping, out of the house, or unable to be with it during the day.

    5

Select a place outside your home where you dog is permitted to "go." It should be relatively close to the house or apartment and should also be well lit at night.

    6

Put your dog's collar and leash on each time you bring it to eliminate. Bring it to the same place each time it goes outside (see References 1). Once your dog understands what you expect of it when you bring it to its outside space, apply a command to the behavior, such as "potty" or "hurry, hurry." Eventually your dog will understand the command and be able to generalize its behavior when the command is given in other locations.

    7

Treat your untrained adult dog as if it is a young puppy. Offer your dog plenty of potty breaks during the day and at night. According to LabradorSavvy.com, a puppy being housebroken needs to go out 1) hourly during the day, 2) immediately after eating or drinking, 3) after being stimulated by activity, 4) when excited, 5) before bedtime and 6) immediately upon awakening (see References 3). Some dogs may wake during the night and need to go outside. Although the adult Labrador has a larger bladder than a puppy, the idea is to put elimination on a schedule that can be modified over time.

    8

As soon as your dog begins to ask to go outside to eliminate, start decreasing the number of scheduled potty breaks. If your dog has an accident during this time, backtrack to the previous schedule and reinforce the behavior for a few days. Clean soiled areas thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner (see References 1).

Questions About Puppy Potty Training

Questions About Puppy Potty Training

Potty training is a normal process for all pet owners which shows your puppy the proper place to relieve itself. Most dogs will refrain from soiling the area where they eat and sleep. Your job is to show your dog the proper place for potty relief. Some dogs are easily trained, while others will be more difficult. "...Some people think that it can be crucial to get dog training tips preceding to having their pets. Some individuals could find this fascinating but a lot of people can recognize that this is a great tip to follow. The situation with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to take care of them. Should I Paper Train My Puppy?

Spreading out newspapers teaches a puppy that there is a specific place that is acceptable for relieving itself. This is just one step of many, transitioning the puppy to eventually going outside.

Do I Have to Go Outside to Watch My Puppy Go Potty?

It is imperative that you do take your puppy outside to guide or carry it to the acceptable place for potty. This should preferably be a grassy area or an area where other dogs have gone recently. The scent of other dogs will encourage the puppy to do the same.

When Should I Take My Puppy Outside?

Most often, it is important to take the puppy out first thing in the morning, after each meal time, as soon as you come home from being away and before going to bed at night. Other times might be when you notice your puppy is playing and suddenly gets restless.

What Happens if My Puppy Has Indoor Accidents?

All puppies will have accidents inside. It's best to be consistent, persistent and patient, and to refrain from scolding or hitting the puppy. Continually take the puppy outside while talking to it with one or two word commands like "go potty," and when it does, use a lot of praise and even offer a small treat. The puppy will eventually learn that going outside gets rewards and is the right thing to do.

Should I Leash the Puppy When Going Outside?

Leashing is the easiest way to control your puppy when potty training. This way you can guide the dog to the acceptable place to relieve itself, coax the dog with words to go potty and follow through immediately with a treat and a lot of praise.

When Will I Know My Puppy is Housebroken?

You will know that your puppy is housebroken when accidents are infrequent or nonexistent. You will also know you have achieved success when you command the puppy to go out and relieve itself and the puppy does so. Soon your puppy will either bark, scratch or circle at the door to let you know it has to go outside. These are all signs that your puppy is housebroken.

How to Teach a Dog to Be Housebroken Using a Bell

How to Teach a Dog to Be Housebroken Using a Bell

Dogs are essentially clean animals that do not like soiling their dens. Given the opportunity to eliminate outside, they will readily do so. Unfortunately, dogs lack the ability to ask to be let outside when they need to "go." When they signals by whining, barking or scratching at the door, they are often told that they are "bad." The bell is a simple tool that offers your dog a dedicated cue that means one thing: going outside to go to the bathroom. It is a simple task to add ringing the bell to the housebreaking task.

Instructions

    1
