How to Train Your Dog to Be Calm & Happy

How to Train Your Dog to Be Calm & Happy

Training a dog to sit and stay is relatively easy, but training a dog to be calm and happy depends upon not only the dog's personality, but yours as well. Dogs are sensitive animals and pick up cues in their environment coming from the people they love. In her book, "On Talking Terms With Dogs," Norwegian dog trainer Turid Rugaas discusses how dogs calm themselves and other animals through the use of subtle body signals. Humans put out those signals all the time, and dogs easily pick up on them. So, if you're not calm and happy, you'll have a hard time training your dog to be calm and happy. So take a deep breath and think Zen thoughts.

Reinforce your dog's behavior when you see it doing something you want to encourage. "...Many individuals believe the reason is essential to get dog training tips preceding to getting their pets. Some people could find this exciting but a lot of people can agree that this is a great tip to follow. The issue with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be cautious of them. Finally, they would probably get away from their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they need to consider and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These guidelines will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to execute suitable dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of peaceful companionship with your ".... When your dog is being quiet, lying peacefully at your feet or on the bed with you, gently pet it and speak softly. Never yell at your dog or use harsh corrections to get it to do what you want it to do. When you see your dog interacting well with little children, neighborhood dogs or animals, let it know that it is doing something that pleases you by offering treats, praise and lavish petting.

    2

Speak quietly to your dog whenever you have a need to interact. Give gentle and kind suggestions and requests, not demands or commands. Use subtle hand signals when training as opposed to harsh corrections such as jerking up on a choke chain. Choke chains should never be used on a dog exhibiting peaceful and happy behavior. Choke chains are for judicious use only on dogs that need extra-strong corrections.

    3

Wake your dog softly and gently. Do not raise your voice especially if your dog is sleeping, snoozing or relaxing. Never raise your voice, yell or grab at your dog. Doing so will cause your dog to be neurotic, making for a very unhappy dog.

If your dog is frantic and you need to calm it in a hurry, gently massage his chest area, which will immediately put your dog at ease.

    4

Begin training your dog to be calm and happy from the moment you bring it home. A dog that has never been yelled at, hit or mistreated will grow up to be an emotionally healthy and happy dog. A dog that has known nothing but love and kindness will develop a deep trust of humans and a close bond with its owner. Raising your dog humanely will result in a calm, happy and emotionally stable dog.

    5

Understand that your dog may be fearful of things such as thunder and lightening, firecrackers, fireworks, sirens, loud voices and other fear inducers. This may be a throwback behavior, particularly in cases of shelter dogs who may have been mistreated before they come to their new homes. In extreme cases, you can administer a remedy available at most health food stores made with a mixture of Bach flowers and other herbs. If homeopathic preparations do not work, your veterinarian may prescribe an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication to give your dog to support your training efforts.

How to Train a Chihuahua to Go Potty Outside

How to Train a Chihuahua to Go Potty Outside

Chihuahuas are considered a more difficult breed to potty train because their small size means that they also have small bladders. While chihuahuas do typically need to be taken outside more often to go potty than larger dogs, they can indeed be house trained effectively. It is easiest to potty train a chihuahua puppy because they are still growing and learning and are impressionable. They are willing at such a young age and they don't have any prior habits.

Instructions

    1

Decide where you want your chihuahua to eliminate. You should focus on training your chihuahua puppy to go potty outside in the grass. If you want your puppy to use a litter box or puppy pad, train them accordingly with the same steps in mind.

    2

Be available and consistent. When first potty training your puppy, it is most effective if you are home during the day for a while to be able to monitor your puppy, recognize your chihuahua's habits and schedule. This is the most effective way to have success with potty training your chihuahua. While home, take your chihuahua outside a lot at first -- after eating, drinking, waking up from a nap and after extended playtime.

    3

Choose words and actions to signal that it's time to go out. For example, ask the same phrase when you're asking if they need to go, such as "do you need to go potty?" or "need to go out?" Pick a phrase and stick with it. "...Some people consider the reason is essential to get dog training tips earlier to having their pets. A number of people might find this interesting but a lot of people could concur that this is a excellent tip to follow. The challenge with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be aware of them. Finally, they could depart their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they need to handle and if they have the time to train their dogs. These tips could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to perform proper dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... Same with the action of taking the dog out -- use the same door, same words and same location when taking the chihuahua out. This gives a sense of consistency and helps them get used to the process and the actions and words that precede it.

    4

Praise generously when your chihuahua puppy urinates or defecates outside. Just like a little child, a chihuahua puppy enjoys exaggerated attention and praise for a job well done. Giving the dog a treat or toy after it uses the potty in the appropriate location is a great way to enforce that you acknowledge their accomplishment and appreciate and approve of their actions.

    5

Supervise your chihuahua throughout the day. You will begin to see patterns as to when your chihuahua is ready to use the bathroom. As you become familiar with your chihuahua and their personal quirks, you will notice actions that they may do when they need to go -- they may lose interest in playing and start sniffing around intently. At this point, you need to take the puppy outside, and if the puppy goes, praise him and treat him.

    6

Kennel your dog in a small crate at night and at times during the day. Chihuahua puppies do not like to urinate or defecate where they eat and sleep, so by keeping them in a confined spot, they will be encouraged to hold it until they are released from the crate and let outside to go.

How to Fix Problems With an Underground Dog Fence

An underground dog fence is for non-aggressive animals that weigh 8 or more pounds. The system produces a radio signal from a fence transmitter to a receiver the dog wears as a collar. The underground wire serves as a boundary, setting a maximum distance the dog can roam. If the dog tries move outside the boundary, he will receive an electric shock correction from the collar. Trouble might occur if the system isn't working properly. The dog yelping inside the house means the signal is too strong. The dog running through the boundary means the signal is too weak. "...Lots of individuals consider the reason is essential to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. Lots of people might find this fascinating but a lot of people may agree that this is a wonderful tip to follow. The condition with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be cautious of them. In the end, they could give up their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they have to handle and if they have the time to train their dogs. These hints will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to carry out proper dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of comfortable friendship with your ".... There are ways to troubleshoot the system.

Instructions

    1

Check the batteries in the transmitter. Put the batteries into a flashlight that uses the same type battery. If the flashlight doesn't work, then the batteries are dead and need replacing. Check the batteries if both lights are not lit on the fence transmitter. Replace batteries if necessary.

    2

Test the receiver on the dog collar. There is a test button on the receiver similar to a battery detector test button. Push the button on the receiver. If the test light flashes then the receiver is working. If there is no light, then replace the receiver collar since it has malfunctioned.

    3

Feel the looseness of the receiver collar around the dog's neck. If you can put more than your fingers in between the throat of the dog and the receiver collar, then it is too loose. Tighten the strap of the receiver collar around the dog's neck.

    4

Adjust the distance the dog can travel. Locate the boundary width-control knob on the fence transmitter. Turn the knob clockwise to increase the distance and counterclockwise to decrease the distance where the dog can roam freely. You can change the strength of the radio signal by changing the setting on the fence transmitter. The setting switch is near the boundary width-control knob. Turn the setting switch clockwise to increase signal strength and counterclockwise to decrease signal strength.

    5

Observe the dog's behavior inside the house. If the boundary wire is too close to the exterior walls, it might be sending a correction to the dog's collar while he's in the house. If signal is too strong, the dog might howl, bark repeatedly or yelp. Check to be sure the underground wire is at least 5 feet away from the house. If not, dig up and rebury the boundary wire further away from the exterior walls of the house.

    6

Survey the perimeter and follow the wire to the fence transmitter. Look for appliances and large metal objects that are 3 feet or closer to the transmitter. These objects can interfere with transmitter. Move any metal objects at least 4 feet away from the fence transmitter.

    7

Check boundary wire placement in conjunction with electrical wires. If there is interference from electrical wiring the boundary wire needs to be moved at least 5 feet away form the electrical wires.

    8

Push the power adapter into the fence transmitter all the way. A poor connection can cause the underground fence system to not work properly. Periodically check the power adapter. Look for frayed wires and a loose connection.

    9

Look to see if both ends underground wire plug into the boundary wire terminals on the fence transmitter. Touch the wire going into the terminal. If it feels loose push it further in. The underground wire needs a continuous connection with the terminals.

    10

Check for exposed wires. Replace wires with insulated copper wiring. Do not try and make repairs to exposed wire. The best repair is total replacement. Purchase replacement wires that have a protective coating suitable for outdoor exposure. Protecting wires from outdoor moisture will guard against shorts in radio signal transmission.

    11

Repair broken boundary wire. You splice new wire into broken wire, but the best repair is complete replacement of the boundary wire --- which means digging it up. If the underground boundary wire is not a solid, continuous strand the radio signal will not transmit to the receiver collar on the dog.

Crate Training a 7 Month Old Puppy

Crate Training a 7 Month Old Puppy

Although you may think it's too late to crate train a 7-month-old puppy, there is hope. Under a year, many puppies can still be well-trained and taught routines through the use of crates. Crate training is popular because it teaches your puppy boundaries, can minimize bathroom accidents in the home, and provides your puppy with its very own haven in your home.

Instructions

    1

Purchase a crate. You want a crate that is large enough for your puppy to stand and be able to spin around, but not so big that they can urinate in one part and move over to another part. If your puppy will be growing bigger, make sure to buy one that will accommodate its size when it is fully grown.

    2

Place the crate in an area of the home that gets a little traffic, like a kitchen or living room. Avoid keeping crates in secluded places, like a garage, as your puppy will associate the crate with being alone.

    3

Place a thick foam liner on the floor of the crate for support and throw in a comfy blanket for the dog to sleep on. Also toss in a toy to keep it occupied when it is locked up.

    4

Mount a puppy water bottle on the side of the crate, and ensure it is always supplied with fresh water. You can find these bottles at most pet shops, or if you prefer, try a no-spill water dish, which can also be found at pet shops.

    5

Place your puppy in the crate for the first time with the door open. Drop a treat into the back area of the crate. Your puppy may be nervous about going into the crate and will probably run out after eating the treat, but a treat will help it begin positive associations.

    6

Feed your puppy inside the crate, so that it begins to relate it with positive enforcement. Opt to always feed your puppy in the crate, or just do this for the first week of crate training.

    7

Place the crate next to your bed every night for the first week of your puppy getting used to sleeping in the crate. If you don't want to do this, leave crate in its spot and place a boom box with some soft music playing next to it. "...Lots of individuals consider that it can be crucial to get dog training tips prior to acquiring their pets. A number of people might discover this fascinating but a lot of people could agree that this is a wonderful tip to follow. The problem with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to be aware of them. Finally, they would probably give up their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they should take care of and if they have the time to train their dogs. These tips will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to perform proper dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... Your puppy may whine the first few nights, but this should go away within a week or two.

    8

Lock your puppy in the crate for about an hour a day, while you are home for the first two weeks. Go about your business, leaving the room a couple of times at least. This will help your puppy get used to the crate, and not have anxiety about being left alone in the home.

    9

Walk your puppy, then place it in the crate when you leave, using praise to reassure it that it isn't being punished. Drop a treat in the first couple of weeks, every time you lock it up. Playing some soft music the first few weeks will help your puppy feel less anxious. Walk your puppy again as soon as you get home.
