How to Housebreak a Puppy in the Winter

How to Housebreak a Puppy in the Winter

While it may seem that winter is the worst possible time for house training a puppy, it can be one of the easiest times of year to accomplish the task. Your puppy doesn't want to be outside in the cold, wet weather anymore than you do. It may take the puppy a few days to know what is expected when it goes outside, but once the puppy knows, it will be more likely to get down to business quickly. In other seasons, puppies will often use potty time to play and get distracted from the business they are there to do. It's less likely this will happen in the winter.

Instructions

Preparation

    1

Shovel a patch clear of snow so that the grass is visible, since many dogs are unsure about whether to potty in snow. This will be the spot to which you bring your puppy for every potty break. Having an established area for potty time will help your puppy know what it is supposed to do once it gets outdoors.

    2

Establish a schedule for the puppy. This is key to housebreaking a puppy at any time of the year, but it is especially helpful in the winter. Once the puppy learns the schedule, it will be more likely to get down to business as soon as it gets outdoors. Potty breaks should occur first thing in the morning, immediately following meals, following naps and just before bedtime. Ideally, the puppy will be given a potty break every couple hours during the day.

    3

Place your umbrella by the door that leads outside, an use it to protect the puppy whenever it's raining or snowing. Precipitation may distract a puppy that is being house trained.

    4

Put on your winter clothing and make sure you dress warmly enough that you'll be comfortable outside for as long as 30 to 45 minutes. You must stay out until the puppy does its business. As you establish your puppy's schedule, you will know when to expect that it needs to potty. Do not return to the house until the puppy has gone potty, even if it means you're outside for an hour. "...Some people think the reason is crucial to get dog training tips preceding to getting their pets. Many people might discover this exciting but a lot of people may agree that this is a great tip to follow. The challenge with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be aware of them. Ultimately, they could give up their pets in order to bring back their past lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they have got to take care of and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These tips will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to perform correct dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of relaxed friendship with your ".... Within a few days, the puppy will know what it is going out for and will do its business much more quickly.

    5

Accompany the puppy to its designated potty location each time, even if you have a fenced yard. While house training, you must be there to give the puppy praise and a treat as soon as it has gone potty. If you wait until the puppy returns to the house, potty training will likely take much longer.

Potty Break

    6

Put a puppy treat in your pocket.

    7

Place the leash on the puppy and take it to its designated potty area.

    8

Give the puppy a treat and lots of praise when it goes potty. Do this outside and do it immediately. Don't wait until you get indoors, no matter how bad the weather.

    9

Dry your puppy's feet and coat with towels once you are back indoors. Puppies are much more prone to hypothermia than adult dogs. It's also important to dry your puppy's paw pads carefully.

How to Control Male Dogs

How to Control Male Dogs

There are many behavior problems that people want to control in their dogs, ranging from aggression to barking or peeing in the house. Many of these problems can be solved with some repetitive training and positive reinforcement. "...Some people assume that it is necessary to get dog training tips preceding to acquiring their pets. Some individuals may find this fascinating but a lot of people might concur that this is a really good tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to take care of them. In the end, they would get away from their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they have got to take care of and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These hints will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to perform correct dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of relaxed companionship with your ".... According to Peteducation.com, the first rule in any training is consistency. Always remember to stay calm and not yell at the dog and do not over-praise, as both actions will distract the dog from his lesson.

Instructions

Territory Marking

    1

Watch him closely and stop him when you see him lifting his leg to mark his territory in the house. Put your dog in just one area of the house, such as the kitchen with child gates or doors, to help with this issue.

    2

Deal with the issue when it occurs. This is the number one housetraining rule from Peteducation.com. If you don't catch him in the act, don't punish him later. Peteducation.com says, "discipline will not help because unless you catch the puppy in the act, he will have no idea what the scolding is for."

    3

Clean the areas he has marked before thoroughly, so that he does not smell them and mark there again. A 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water or many products such as Nil-Odor, Odornil, OdorBan and Nature's Miracle will get rid of the odors, according to PetPlace.com. Do not use ammonia based cleaning products, as this has the opposite effect and encourage your dog.

    4

Praise him when he marks his territory outside. The ASPCA behavior website says that positive reinforcement is a great way for dogs to learn quickly.

Barking

    5

Teach your dog that he is allowed to bark until you say "Quiet." According to the ASPCA behavior website, the best way to do this is to let the dog bark a few times, then say the command normally. At that point, walk over to the dog, hold his muzzle closed and repeat the word.

    6

Release the dog and call him away from the area he was barking and reward him with a treat.

    7

Feed him many small sized treats if you feel uncomfortable holding his muzzle. Just walk to the dog and tell him calmly "Quiet" and give him the treats one after another gradually increasing time between treats while praising him for being good. According to the ASPCA behavior article on barking positive reinforcement helps dogs learn quickly.

    8

Repeat the process you chose many times until the dog has learned to stop barking when you say "Quiet."

Other Behavior Issues

    9

Neuter your dog. When done young this is most effective. According to Petsafe.net neutering your dog can help reduce aggression, marking territory in the house, and unwanted sexual behaviors towards other dogs as well as humans.

    10

Prevent begging at the table by using baby gates or doors to keep your dog out of the room when the family is eating. Another method the ASPCA behavior website suggests is to teach them to lay down or stay somewhere else if you don't want to confine them.

    11

Stop destructive chewing by giving the dog toys that give him something to chew on for a long time. Some examples that ASPCA gives are Nylabones, Smart Chew bones and natural bones. Do not give him cooked leftover bones such as chicken or t-bones since these can get caught in his throat or chip off pieces of his teeth.

How to Get Rid of an Aggressive Dog

How to Get Rid of an Aggressive Dog

At times, man's best friend turns out to be not so friendly. Owning an aggressive dog can be a big liability, and getting rid of one is often easier said than done, since there are many issues to consider. Finding someone else to take your dog may be a good solution as long as its new owners understand that they will have to deal with the animal's aggression. Putting your dog to sleep may seem humane but is a pretty drastic solution. There are other solutions to consider before you make a final decision about your dog.

Instructions

    1

Your first step should be to take your dog to your veterinarian. Your vet may discover that your dog's aggressive behavior is caused by a medical condition, such as severe pain, hypothyroidism or a brain tumor.

    2

Consult with a dog behaviorist. "...Many people believe that it must be crucial to get dog training tips preceding to having their pets. A number of people could find this exciting but a lot of people might concur that this is a really good tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be aware of them. Ultimately, they would probably depart their pets in order to bring back their past lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they have got to handle and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These hints could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to perform suitable dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of comfortable friendship with your ".... After ruling out any medical, congenital or hereditary conditions, a dog behaviorist can assess the situation and tell you whether your dog's behavior can be changed with behavior modification.

    3

Assess what type of aggression your dog suffers. For example, if your dog is aggressive only towards small children or other animals, it may do perfectly well with a family of only adults or a family without other animals.

    4
Most rescue groups will think twice before accepting an aggressive dog, but some are willing.
Most rescue groups will think twice before accepting an aggressive dog, but some are willing.

Surrender your dog to a no-kill shelter if you do not want it to be euthanized. Call or visit the rescue groups, animal sanctuaries and shelters in your area to find out if they are willing to rehabilitate or take care of your dog. Some shelters are willing to take dogs with a history of aggression or biting. Be aware that surrendering your dog to a shelter without a no-kill policy will likely result in your dog's being euthanized.

    5
If your dog cannot be trusted around guests, safely crate it.

How to Teach a Dog an Agility Course

How to Teach a Dog an Agility Course

Agility training is a great way to give energetic dogs something to do. The dog must be able to focus and know commands in order to do agility. Professional agility courses require dogs to be at least 9 months of age, but training at home can start any time. Agility is recommended for working breeds and dogs that are of a medium build. If a dog seems to have a lot of energy and intelligence, then it will probably do well with agility, according to the Complete Guide To Responsible Dog Ownership.

Instructions

    1

Teach the dog various commands to begin with. It will need to know how to sit and stay, to start. Other important commands for the agility course are left, right, up, down, fast, slow, heel and away. To help the dog understand the commands, walk it through the agility course on a lead. Introduce the dog to one piece of equipment at a time, using the proper commands for that particular item, like up for jumping through the tire jump.

    2

Walk the dog through the series of obstacles a few times, using commands, until it seems like she has a hang of it. This is the time to take off the lead and give it a go. Use the pause table to give her a break during the run, and as a time for her to regain her focus. "...Some people think that it is crucial to get dog training tips prior to acquiring their pets. Many people could find this fascinating but a lot of people might concur that this is a very good tip to follow. The challenge with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to be cautious of them. Ultimately, they could depart their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they have to take care of and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These guidelines could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to conduct suitable dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of relaxed friendship with your ".... A good way to make sure she understand the goal is to reward her with a treat when she correctly completes a section without the lead.

    3

Raise the difficulty of the course as she gets used to it. This can be done by making jumps higher, adding more items and working with her to go faster through the course. Be sure to use commands specific to each item; do not use up or down when the dog needs to go through a tunnel. Never reprimand her for missing a jump; instead just focus on positive reinforcement for the agility items she does succeed with.
