Use a word or two like "go potty" every time you want your puppy to use the pad. Eventually, it'll associate the word or phrase with urinating and defecating and may even go on command, which is useful when you and your puppy are away from home.

Praise your puppy with your voice, petting or treats if it uses the pad. Use positive reinforcement whenever possible. If your puppy has an accident, either say nothing or firmly say "no," and take it over to the pad. Praise your puppy if it uses the pad. Do not rub your puppy's nose in its own waste or make a big deal out of an accident. Remember that your puppy is still learning and it's bound to take some time before it catches on to what you want. Your training must be consistent or your puppy will become confused. Let other people in your household know what your training methods are so they can follow them as well.

Leash your puppy and attach the other end of the leash to you or something nearby, as recommended by the Humane Society of the United States, so you know what your puppy is doing at all times. Put your puppy in a crate when no one can watch it. Once your puppy consistently uses the pad, give it some freedom to roam, one room at a time.

Move the training pad gradually closer to your outside door if you'd like your puppy to learn to do its bathroom duties outside. Once the pad is sitting next to the door, encourage your puppy to go outside instead of using the pad. It won't be long before the pad won't be necessary.

Instructions

Set up a kennel that has enough room to allow your dog to fully stand up and turn around, but not much bigger. If the kennel is too large, the dog may choose to soil it. Place the kennel in an area where your dog can see your family.

Place a soft blanket inside of the kennel so that your dog can rest in comfort. Take off the door or secure the door of the kennel so that it remains open during this part of the training.

Place some dog treats right outside the kennel. Call your dog over to the kennel and point to the treats so that it notices them. Place some treats inside of the kennel door and on the blanket. The dog may or may not go inside the kennel. Do not force it to go. Older dogs may be picky about treats. Find some that your older canine really likes before starting this training.

Leave the treats in place to allow the dog to retrieve them. Continue tossing treats into the kennel to entice the dog to enter over a period of two to three days.Call your dog over when you toss them in, so that it notices what you're doing. If the dog enters the crate to retrieve the treats, do not shut the door. Allow it to go in and come out so it becomes comfortable with the idea of the kennel.

Place the dog's food in its dish outside of the kennel and allow it to eat there after it has become comfortable going in and out of the kennel for treats. The next day, place the food inside of the kennel. Over the course of two to three days, move the food dish back into the kennel until you can gently close the door while your dog is eating.

Open the door after your dog finishes eating and allow it to come out. Later, toss some treats into the kennel and close the door once the dog goes inside. Keep the door closed for one to three minutes, depending on the dog's reaction. If it becomes distressed or whines, open the door.

Increase the amount of time you leave the dog in the kennel with the door shut after treats or feeding. Do it gradually and always release the canine if it becomes anxious or agitated when the door is closed. Finally, you will reach the point where your dog doesn't mind being in the kennel.

How to Train Puppies at Home

You can train your puppy at home using positive reinforcement and reward-based training exercises. It is important to train your puppy to respond to basic obedience commands while she is young to ensure that you will be able to control her when she reaches full size. You can also toilet train your puppy at home to avoid messes inside the house. Training a puppy requires patience and consistency to be effective.

Toilet-train your puppy by choosing an area in the backyard for him to use as a toilet area. Set the puppy up to succeed by taking him to the designated area when he is more likely to need to pass waste. This includes after meal times or after drinking water, after an active play session and immediately after he wakes up. Puppies need to pass waste regularly, so take him out every hour to give him the chance to use the area. Use a leash to keep the puppy from wandering away from the desired area and wait with him for five minutes. If he succeeds in passing waste in the toilet area give him lots of praise. Ignore negative behavior. Yelling "bad dog" or pushing him toward a toy that the dog's not interested in playing with could be mistaken for positive reinforcement. Introduce a different toy or take a break from play time and try again later instead of getting angry.

Continue to shape your dog's behavior by gradually setting higher expectations. For example, initially reward your dog for carrying a Frisbee in its mouth. Eventually it will carry the Frisbee without reward. Reward your dog when it brings the Frisbee to you. Once it masters bringing it to you, hold the reward until it catches the Frisbee when it is thrown.
