Labrador-Heeler Mix Training Methods

Labrador-Heeler Mix Training Methods

A mixed-breed dog with one Labrador and one heeler parent is likely to be an intelligent pet, because both parents are considered to be from intelligent breeds. Labradors and heelers, or Australian cattle dogs, are highly trainable pets that will be eager to please their owners. One downside of this intelligent dog breed, though, can be boredom; a bored dog can be destructive if left alone for long periods of time. Both dog breeds are receptive to a variety of training methods--use of a clicker, treat rewards or positive reinforcement--and a dog of these two breeds should respond to these techniques as well. Pick whatever works best for your lifestyle and makes you and the dog feel most successful.

Puppy Socialization

Training should start early with a Labrador-heeler mix puppy. Heelers are known to be loyal, one-person-type dogs and can be shy around people if they are not socialized at a young age. One the other hand, the Labrador personality is very friendly and less apprehensive. Determine how your puppy behaves around strangers and try to introduce him to as many different kinds of people as possible--short, tall, male, female, young, old and of different ethnicities. You can also try to dress up around the puppy to see how he responds to different ways people look; try wearing a funny hat or uniform around the young dog. Praise the puppy for interacting in a positive way with each new person he meets.

Basic Obedience

Because both Labradors and heelers are considered intelligent breeds, you should enroll in a basic obedience class with your dog. The class will help you learn how to effectively train your dog and you should finish the class with a repertoire of basic commands and maybe even a trick or two. Both breeds are known to jump and tug on a leash. Some Labradors will even enjoy a game of leash tug-of-war. Begin walking with your dog on a leash daily. Do not allow your dog to lead you, tug at the leash or approach strangers. A tip for leash training is to stop walking and stand in place each time your dog pulls the leash taught. Begin walking again when the leash is loose. Carry treats in a pocket that your dog can smell to encourage him to walk by your side. Work on commands such as sit, down and stay at home as well.

Positive Rewards

Because of the somewhat cautious nature of the heeler breed, positive reinforcement is especially important. Praise your dog for doing what is expected of him. Use kind words and lots of petting. If you prefer clicker training, use a click with each desired action. "...Many individuals consider the reason is crucial to get dog training tips earlier to having their pets. Some people might discover this interesting but a lot of people can concur that this is a really good tip to follow. The challenge with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to take care of them. Eventually, they would probably abandon their pets in order to retrieve their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they should take care of and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These tips can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct proper dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of peaceful companionship with your ".... Try to avoid yelling at or striking a dog with your hand because you do not want the dog to fear you.

Work for Your Dog

You may find that your Labrador-heeler mix wants a job to do. Australian cattle dogs are from the herding group and need frequent work and exercise. They can excel in advanced obedience and training classes and in agility or herding trials. Labradors, on the other hand, are much more laid-back dogs that don't necessarily mind lounging around the house after a daily walk. Determine which personality your dog exhibits and plan his daily routine accordingly. Plenty of exercise and daily walks will also go a long way to helping you develop a long relationship with a well-behaved dog.

How to Make Dog Hurdles

How to Make Dog Hurdles

Hurdles are one of the most important components of any canine agility course. The hurdle tests the animal's ability to jump over high obstacles without knocking the hurdles down. A dog hurdle consists of different lengths of PVC pipe and requires a cutting tool, measuring tape and strong glue.

Instructions

    1

Build the "feet" of the hurdle. Beginning with the four 12" PVC pipes, glue four end caps to one end of each pipe. Slide and glue the pipe end without the end cap into one end of the PVC "T" connector. Repeat this process four times until all four 12" PVC pipes are connected to two "T" connectors. Glue a stub into both "T" connectors in the hole not containing a 12" PVC pipe.

    2

Set aside the hurdle feet. Glue each end of the 50" PVC pipe into the base area of the "T" connector. The "T" connectors must be coplanar -- meaning the connectors are even with each other when lying on their side. Turn the 50" PVC pipe with its "T" connectors so that the "T" hole is facing upward. Glue the feet perpendicular to the 50" pipe, and let all components dry.

    3

Glue two remaining end caps onto one side each of the 30" PVC pipes. Glue the other end of each 30" PVC pipe into either side of the foundation assembled in Steps 1 and 2. At this point, the base and structure of the dog hurdle are complete.

    4

Create two adjustable jump cups. This serves as the hurdle height and can be adjusted up and down. Using a PVC cutting tool, cut approximately halfway across the 2" PVC pipe width-wise. "...Many individuals believe that it must be essential to get dog training tips earlier to having their pets. A number of people might discover this exciting but a lot of people could agree that this is a really good tip to follow. The challenge with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to take care of them. In the end, they could get away from their pets in order to retrieve their past lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they have to take care of and if they have the time to train their dogs. These tips can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to carry out suitable dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of comfortable a relationship with your ".... Then use the PVC cutter to cut length-wise down the pipe to meet the first cut and repeat on the other side of the pipe with the goal being to remove the entire rectangular piece to form a "cup." Illustrations are available in Reference 2. Once the cup is complete, apply some glue, and slide it onto the 1" Snap-On Saddle. Repeat again to create two jump cups.

    5

Snap in the 48" PVC pipe jump bar to each jump cup and snap the jump bar onto the hurdle. Be sure to provide color on the bar so the dog can see the jump bar contrasting with the rest of the structure. Adjust the bar according to the dog's height and jump goals.

How do I Treat Daschund Separation Anxiety With Another Dog?

How do I Treat Daschund Separation Anxiety With Another Dog?

Originally bred to hunt badgers and other small animals in Germany, dachshunds love the company of people and other dogs. "...Some people assume that it is essential to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. Some individuals might find this interesting but a lot of people may recognize that this is a top notch tip to follow. The situation with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to be aware of them. In the end, they would probably give up their pets in order to reestablish their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they should handle and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These hints can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to execute suitable dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... Dachshunds can develop separation anxiety when left alone, which sometimes can be helped with the addition of a companion dog.

Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety results in destructive behavior in dachshunds, including chewing, digging, scratching, barking, and inappropriate urination or defecation in house-trained dogs, according to the Humane Society. If your dog reacts to any separation from you, the owner, with these behaviors, but not at other times, it suffers from separation anxiety.

Considerations

Dachshunds enjoy the company of other dogs, especially other dachshunds, according to Almost Home Rescue. If a companion dog has passed away, introducing a new dog, since this is such a social breed, may resolve the anxiety. Keep in mind that the anxiety still relates to separation from the owner, not just from loneliness, so a new dog may not solve the problem, according to the Humane Society.

Treatments

If undesirable behaviors continue with your dachshund, or worsen even after the introduction of a companion dog, over-the-counter calming products, like DAP (a synthetic pheromone comforting for dogs, and comes in sprays and diffusers) may be used in your home to deal with separation anxiety. Your veterinarian also can provide prescription medications to treat your dachshund.

How to Use a Halti on a German Shepherd Pup

How to Use a Halti on a German Shepherd Pup

A halti is a tool used to train dogs; it is gentler than a traditional training collar. It resembles an open-ended muzzle that doesn't restrict the dog from opening its mouth. Haltis come in several colors, including red and black. German shepherds are very intelligent dogs, and have been used as seeing-eye dogs, drug dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, guard dogs and livestock herders. Using a halti to train these puppies is probably one of the best ways to assert your authority over the puppy, letting him know who is boss.

Instructions

    1

Engage your German shepherd puppy in a relaxing belly rub after some time playing outside. The first time you put the halti on your puppy, you want to make sure he's not in the mood to play. This will send the wrong signal to the dog.

    2

Have another person put the halti on the puppy while he is enjoying the belly rub. This will help acclimatize him to the halti. Attach the leash so you're German shepherd cannot run away. The halti should fit snugly but not tightly. You should be able to stick one finger under the halti at the back of the head and underneath the chin. If it does not adjust properly, you have the wrong-size halti for your German shepherd pup.

    3

Continue rubbing his belly with the halti on until your fingers get tired. Then you may take the halti off. Repeat the process as much as possible throughout the day. "...Most people assume the reason is crucial to get dog training tips earlier to having their pets. A number of people might discover this fascinating but a lot of people can agree that this is a top notch tip to follow. The situation with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be cautious of them. In the end, they might get away from their pets in order to bring back their past lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they should take care of and if they have the time to train their dogs. These suggestions can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to carry out suitable dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... Continue this method, cutting down on the use of belly rubs, completely eliminating them by the third day.

    4

Take the German shepherd puppy outside in a fenced in area, such as your backyard, with the halti on and the leash attached. Practice walking around with the puppy and every time he tries to get away from you, snap the leash quickly to bring him back into line.

    5

Spend a few days training in your yard before taking your new puppy on a walk around the block. While you are walking around the block, keep your puppy's head parallel with your leg. Every time he starts to pull away, snap the leash and bring him back to his place.

    6

Offer a reward every day after a good walk where your German shepherd puppy has obeyed and done well with his training. Do not give rewards for bad behavior.

Toilet training a puppy may appear to be a challenging task, but, equipped with the right tools and some knowledge about potty habits, the mission can be accomplished. By taking the time to execute suitable dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... With time and patience, most puppies eventually learn to be house trained.

Instructions

    1

Purchase the right sized crate. To work well for potty training, the crate must be neither too large nor too small to allow your puppy to stand and turn around. If in doubt, ask the store personnel for advice.

    2

Find a quiet spot for the crate and place the blanket and chew toy in it. Leave the door open and encourage your puppy to inspect inside. Lure a hesitant puppy into the crate with treats and offer praise when it goes inside. The goal is for the puppy to enjoy being in the crate.

    3

Take your puppy outside and wait until it does its business. When done, take your puppy inside and lure it into the crate with a treat. Once it is in the crate, give the treat, close the door and and let your puppy rest inside with the toy and blanket.

    4

Watch the puppy vigilantly for signs of needing to go outside to potty. Depending on its age, it may be able to control its urge for different lengths of time. Getting up, whining and sniffing may be signs it needs a bathroom break. Be swift in taking the puppy out.

    5

Praise your puppy lavishly when it successfully does business outdoors. Give it treats and show excitement. Your puppy will soon associate outside pottying with good things. With time and repetition, and as the puppy gains better bowel and bladder control, your puppy will eventually learn to give you advanced warning that it must go out.

How to Teach Dogs to Dance

How to Teach Dogs to Dance

You can teach almost any dog to dance, with the proper training. Dogs are willing to perform many tricks for their owners; you simply have to teach them what you want, using positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement involves using treats, toys or praise to encourage a dog to perform. Use treats initially, switching to praise after the dog knows the command.

Instructions

    1

Cut pieces of chicken, cheese or hot dog into small bite-sized pieces. Place the treats into a training bag, or your pocket. Bring the dog to a quiet room with minimal distractions. Start the training with a command the dog is familiar with. Repeat the command five to six times as a warm-up.

    2

Hold a treat two inches above the dog's nose. Raise the treat up to eight inches above the dog's head (higher for large breeds). When your dog is standing, turn the dog's treat in a circular motion. The dog will spin in a circle. "...Most people consider that it must be crucial to get dog training tips earlier to acquiring their pets. Some individuals could find this interesting but a lot of people can concur that this is a top notch tip to follow. The situation with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to take care of them. By taking the time to perform appropriate dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of peaceful companionship with your ".... As the dog is turning with the treat, state "Dance!" Reward the dog with the treat.

    3

Make the dog stand up on its hind legs with another treat. Move the treat backwards, making the dog back up to see the treat. As the dog is backing up, state "Dance!" Practice both movements until the dog is familiar with the command. Combine both movements together (turning the treat in a circle and moving the treat backwards) to get the dog to dance. Reward it with a treat.

How to Train a Cairn Puppy

The Cairn, also known as the Cairn terrier, is a breed that was originally bred in the Scottish highlands and on the Isle of Skye. Cairn puppies are known to be independent, inquisitive and intelligent. As an intelligent breed, Cairn puppies are quick to learn. You should start training your puppy as soon as you get him home, so that he knows the rules, although you should take it slowly at first.

Instructions

    1

Teach your puppy to go to the bathroom outside. House breaking your Cairn puppy is one of the most important aspects of dog training, and should be tackled right away. Take your puppy into the garden on a collar and leash often so that he will learn where it is acceptable to go. Praise your puppy or give treats when he gets it right.

    2

Repeat commands to your Cairn puppy so he learns these words and their meanings. You should teach basic commands such as "off," "down," "sit," "stay" and "leave." Reward your puppy for obeying these commands, you can praise him, give treats or play with a favorite toy.

    3

Make your training sessions short and often. Puppies have a short attention span, so you should train your Cairn puppy for no more than 10 minutes at a time at first.

    4

Finish your training sessions on a positive note. "...Lots of individuals believe that it is essential to get dog training tips earlier to acquiring their pets. A number of people could find this fascinating but a lot of people could agree that this is a really good tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to take care of them. Eventually, they might get away from their pets in order to bring back their past lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they have to consider and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These tips could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to carry out suitable dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of peaceful a relationship with your ".... Make sure you wait until your puppy has obeyed your command correctly before you stop training, otherwise both you and your puppy will remember the negative point and be discouraged. Give him something easy to achieve at the end of training.

    5

Play games to help your puppy learn. Cairn terriers were originally a working breed and they love to be active and useful. Playing fetch or getting your puppy to find an item you've hidden, will help train your dog but will also keep her active and engaged.
