How to Silence Dogs

How to Silence Dogs

Dogs have a language of their own. It is made up of barking, whining, howling, and growling. Barking is a dog's primary means of communication. Your dog barks to warn you that someone is coming, tell you it is excited or afraid, or communicate with other dogs. Some barking is normal and expected. Excessive barking, however, can be a nuisance for you and for your neighbors. Fortunately, you can teach your dog to be quiet on command.

Instructions

    1

Fill a tin can with coins, popcorn kernels, or dried beans. Seal the can with duct tape so that you can shake it without spilling the contents.

    2

Shake the can when your dog starts to bark. Say the word "quiet" in a firm voice as you do. The sound will interrupt your dog's barking, and it will start to associate the verbal command with the noise.

    3

Praise your dog by saying "good quiet!" in a happy and excited voice. Do this the instant your dog stops barking and turns its attention to you (or your shaker can). Reward it with a treat as well. It may be helpful to teach your dog to associate a clicker with reward by giving it treats as you click. This will allow you to click as you praise your dog and then give it the treat a few seconds later if your dog is out in the yard.

    4

Repeat steps 2 and 3 every time your dog starts to bark, gradually eliminating the shaker can and relying only on your verbal command. Require your dog to be silent for longer periods before giving it a reward. Start by rewarding it instantly, then wait for two seconds, then four, then six, and so on until your dog no longer needs a treat to obey your command.

Homemade Sand Box for Dogs

Homemade Sand Box for Dogs

Given the opportunity, most yard dogs dig. Some are scraping out a cool place to lie down, some are sniffing out underground treats such as juicy grubs, and others are just hoping to tunnel their way to freedom from a boring backyard. You could asphalt your outdoor space to curb your dog's behavior, but training him to only dig in designated areas is a much better option.

Plastic Wading Pools

For treat and treasure hunting diggers, fill a shallow wading pool with a mix of sand and mulch. Wading pool sandpits are temporary and leave the ground in good condition, making them a great option if you're living in a rental property. Bury a few of your dog's favorite treats, toys or chew bones in the mix. Praise him for digging up the goodies, but give verbal reprimands if he wanders toward off-limit areas and starts testing the ground. Make his sandbox the most attractive option for digging behaviors by spending time with him playing in the box and frequently rotating treats for him to dig up.

Cool and Shady Sand Pits

Pay attention to where your dog's sandbox is located. Dogs that dig seeking a cool place to lie down are not going to use a sandbox that is located in a bright sunny area. Instead, lay out an area under a shade tree, or build a dog-sized pergola over your pooch's designated dig pit. Moist soil is also a must for cool-seeking canines. "...Lots of individuals believe that it can be crucial to get dog training tips prior to acquiring their pets. Some people could find this exciting but a lot of people might concur that this is a top notch tip to follow. The challenge with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to take care of them. Eventually, they would abandon their pets in order to retrieve their past lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they have got to take care of and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These hints will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to carry out correct dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of comfortable companionship with your ".... Once you've chosen an area for the sandbox, till the ground and pile the loose soil to the side. Line the area with garden cloth or a heavy layer of leaves. Lay landscape timbers around the perimeter. Mix the loose soil you removed with loam-based mulch and add it back into the sandbox. Avoid large bark chunks or stones that may be uncomfortable for your dog to lie on. Provide a small wading pool of water next to the sandbox, or even in the center, to encourage your hot-natured dog to only dig in his own space.

Tunnels

Dachshunds, terriers and beagles are a few of the breeds that love going underground. Create their sandbox by using cinder blocks to form a rectangular retaining wall. Fill the enclosure with sand. Build tunnels and channels into the sandbox using concrete blocks, barrels, cement culverts and wooden crates. Use caution when designing these sandpits; you don't want your pet to be crushed by poorly constructed tunnels or buried alive. It is not necessary to locate the tunnels completely under the sand. Add gravel, bark and stones to these sandpits to help stabilize structures. Creative use of driftwood can also add a fun element to this doggy play area.

Obstacles

Some highly energetic dogs love to swing from ropes, push around large objects and play tug-of-war. Locate their sandbox under a tree with a sturdy limb for hanging a strong knotted rope they can easily grasp. Place cement pavers vertically into a shallow trench dug around the perimeter of the sandbox. Fill the area with sand and gravel. Add an old bowling ball for them to push around and some large bones for them to gnaw. Keep an old pot nearby filled with water because dogs using this sandbox are going to be thirsty after their workout.

Innotek SD-2100 Installation

Innotek SD-2100 Installation

The Innotek SD-2100 is an electronic shock collar system used to contain a dog in a safe area of the yard without the use of a fence. If a dog wearing the receiver collar moves too close to wiring that has been buried along the boundary line of the containment area, the dog will receive a light shock. With training, your dog will learn not to cross the boundary line. The collar is rechargeable and can be removed to take the dog for walks outside of the containment area.

Instructions

    1

Mount the transmitter. Select a dry, indoor location within 5 feet of a standard electrical outlet. Use the holes on the side of the transmitter as a template and mark the location of holes with a pencil. Use a screwdriver to install the transmitter to the wall using the supplied screws.

    2

Lay out the fence wire around the boundary lines of your property to create the containment loop. Use the splicing kit included in the product packaging to connect each side of the containment loop wiring to the twisted wire attached to the AC adapter. Plug in the AC adapter, connect it to the transmitter and turn it on. A green light should illuminate to indicate a successful connection.

    3

Charge your collar receiver by placing it in the receiver cradle located on top of the transmitter, then test the fence. Set the "Field Width Adjustment Knob" to the "9" position. Walk the dog's collar up to the fence wire. Listen for the warning tone and look for the test light to light to confirm the system is working.

    4

Unplug the system and bury the fence wiring in a 3-inch-deep trench. Place flags at the edge of the selected boundary field where the warning tone is first heard. Plug the unit back into the power source and place the receiving collar on your dog. The fence is now ready to use as a containment device for your pet.

Steps to Crate Train a Puppy

Steps to Crate Train a Puppy

House training your dog is one of the best things you can do for you and your sanity, especially if you have just purchased a puppy. House training your pet will give you the peace of mind that there will be no accidents in the house while you are sleeping, out with friends or at work.

Instructions

    1

Purchase a crate. Your crate should be only slightly bigger than your dog. They should be able to lay completely stretched and no bigger. By instinct, dogs will not want to go to the bathroom in the same place that they sleep. By keeping the crate roughly the size of your dog with little space to walk around, you will ensure that your dog will not use it as a bathroom and then lay in it. Be sure never to use the crate to punish your dog.

    2

Choose a spot for your crate. Do not place the crate in a damp or cold area, nor an area that is exposed to direct sunlight. Dogs, especially puppies, who are just beginning their training may have an adverse reaction to being crated all night. This may result in constant howling or whining. While it may upset or bother you, your dog should stop this behavior once they become used to the crate. If the dog whines when you are out of the room, place their crate in your bedroom and let them know you are still around.

    3

Place your dog in the crate. Crating should be done while you sleep and while you are out. "...Lots of individuals assume that it can be necessary to get dog training tips preceding to acquiring their pets. Some individuals could find this exciting but a lot of people might recognize that this is a wonderful tip to follow. The challenge with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be cautious of them. Eventually, they would give up their pets in order to retrieve their past lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they need to consider and if they have the time to train their dogs. These hints can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to carry out appropriate dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... If there is someone else home to let the dog out for a bathroom break while you are out, then crating should be limited to bedtime.

    4

Designate several bathroom times. While it may be difficult while the puppy is still young and has a smaller bladder, try to designate bathroom time early in the dog's life. It is up to you when you would like to take the dog out; however the dog should be let out as soon as you wake up, once in the afternoon or around dinner, and once before you go to bed. The most important part is to be consistent in your training.

    5

Use specific phrasing. If you say "go pee" before taking your dog out or letting them roam the yard every time you let them out, your dog will get used to the command and learn to relate it with the act.

How To Get My Dog Over His Fear of the Leash

How To Get My Dog Over His Fear of the Leash

Dogs are energetic, happy creatures, but some things can make them fearful. A dog that is afraid of being led on a leash, which might be due to the fact that the leash prohibits mobility, can make exercising the dog difficult. With the right supplies and expertise, you can help your dog overcome its fear of the leash, enabling you to take the dog outside to walk and play.

Instructions

    1

Introduce the leash to the dog by placing it in key areas where the dog will likely see it: next to the dog's feeding bowl, next to the dog's toys or near its bed. Placing the leash in areas associated with fun, food or leisure will create a positive association in the dog's mind.

    2

Wrap the leash around your hand and pet the dog with the same hand. This will allow the dog to feel the leash while receiving positive reinforcement. Repeat until the dog stops showing signs of discomfort or aggressiveness. Give the dog a few treats during each step to make sure he is associating the leash with positive things.

    3

Attach the leash to the collar once the dog is comfortable with the sight and feel of the leash. Do not hold the leash, but instead let it hang freely. Place the dog in a sitting position and speak to the dog in a calm voice. If the dog becomes agitated, play a quick game of tug-of-war with a toy to get your dog over its nervousness. After sitting and/or playing, let the dog walk around freely with the leash hanging from the collar. Make sure it doesn't get tangled on any items around the house.
