How to Potty Train a Chorkie

How to Potty Train a Chorkie

The Chorkie, a type of designer dog, is a cute, 8- to 15-pound cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Chihuahua. Like all mixed breeds, individual Chorkies may take on the appearance and characteristics of a Yorkie, a Chihuahua or a combination of the two. Though Chorkies are not nearly as popular as purebred Yorkies or Chihuahuas, they share many of the same positive qualities: intelligence, playfulness and a compact, apartment-friendly size. Unfortunately, both Yorkies and Chihuahuas are difficult to housebreak, a quality shared by the hybrid. With some positive reinforcement and consistent training, however, your dog should be housebroken within two weeks.

Instructions

    1

Decide whether to take your Chorkie outside or have him go in a designated indoor spot. Some dog experts recommend litter-box training since toy breeds hate going outside in cold weather, but outdoor training will work as long as you are consistent.

    2

Set up a litter box in a designated spot in your home, if you choose to train indoors. Newspapers will also work, but if you potty train with newspapers, your dog might feel free to relieve himself on other papers.

    3

Designate a specific outdoor area for your Chorkie to use, if you want to train outdoors. Give him the chance to relieve himself in this specific area before you go on an extended walk. This will allow you and your pet to enjoy the extended walk without the hassles of doggie bags, angry neighbors and so forth.

    4

Confine your Chorkie to a dog crate or box during the housebreaking process. Leave him in the crate at all times unless you are playing with him, walking him or taking him to his toilet area. "...Most people believe that it can be crucial to get dog training tips preceding to having their pets. Some people may find this fascinating but a lot of people may recognize that this is a great tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be aware of them. Eventually, they would probably get away from their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they have got to handle and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These guidelines will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to execute proper dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of peaceful a relationship with your ".... The crate should be about 2 by 3 feet, enough space to eat and rest comfortably. Your pet won't eliminate in his personal space unless it's an emergency.

    5

Feed your dog breakfast and dinner at set times every day, and take him to his designated toilet area 30 minutes after eating.

    6

Take your dog to visit his litter box or outside area as soon as you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed at night. If he wakes up at any time during the night, take him out immediately.

    7

Say "Go toilet" or a similar phrase of your choosing when your Chorkie starts doing his business in the designated spot. Your dog will soon associate this phrase with going to the toilet, and will eventually run to the door or his litter box when you use the phrase.

    8

Praise your dog when he eliminates where you want him to. Say "Good boy!" and offer a treat or other positive reinforcement.

    9

Clean your dog's toilet area regularly, whether it is inside or outside.

    10

Correct your dog calmly and humanely if he has an accident in the house. When you see him relieving himself in a non-toilet area, clap your hands and sternly say "No!" If you notice a mess but didn't catch your dog in the act, carry your dog to the mess and say "No!" Do not hit your dog, scream at length, or give sustained punishments (e.g. refusing to take him to the dog park next weekend). Dogs don't respond to or understand such punishments, and they will do more harm than good.

    11

Clean up accidents immediately, and eliminate odors with apple cider vinegar or a pet enzyme spray, available at all pet stores.

How to Keep Pets From Digging Up Yard Plants

How to Keep Pets From Digging Up Yard Plants

Many dogs are diggers, and some plants smell appealing and taste good to them. Digging is instinctive for dogs, especially in breeds such as terriers who were bred to dig and seek out mice and other vermin in the ground. Digging is fun for your dog, and instinctive behavior from the wild. So discouraging your dog from digging requires retraining.

Cats are not diggers by nature, but will dig when they want to use the yard for a litter box. Cats will dig in the yard to eliminate, and sometimes they'll choose your freshly dug garden, where the dirt is loose. They will also frequently dig up plants in spots they want to use.

Instructions

    1

Deter cats or dogs from digging up plants with water. When you see your pet digging in the garden, turn on the sprinkler or mist them with a soft spray from the hose. Repeat this any time you see your pet digging and it will teach it not to dig. Spraying a cat will chase it from the spot but will not deter it from returning.

    2

Add an animal soil repellent to the place in your yard where cats and dogs like to dig. Purchase one that is safe for plants. This is an effective way to repel both cats and dogs. To discourage cats, you can also provide a litter box for the cat to use in place of your yard.

    3

Redirect a persistent digging dog by providing it with its own play pit. Choose a place in the yard that your dog can call its own. Depending on the dog's size, dig an area and fill it with sand. "...Many people consider that it can be necessary to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. Many people may find this interesting but a lot of people can recognize that this is a excellent tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be aware of them. Finally, they would probably give up their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they should handle and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These hints may be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to conduct correct dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of relaxed companionship with your ".... When the dog digs there, this will prevent it from getting muddy when the ground is wet.

    4

Train your dog to use its spot by putting some of its favorite toys in the area you've prepared. Add some treats for the dog to find. Praise the dog when it digs in its spot. If the dog starts digging in another area, lead the dog to its spot and use a command, such as dig here. This is particularly effective for breeds such as terriers that are instinctive diggers, or scent hounds who will be attracted to the smell of their toys and treats.

    5

Increase your dog's activity and exercise. Some dogs dig out of boredom. With more activity, your dog may be less inclined to dig holes in the yard.

    6

Place decorative fencing around the base of your plants. Dogs and cats will dig in the most accessible places, and fencing around the plants will keep them safe.

Sniffing Games for Dogs

Sniffing Games for Dogs

From drugs to missing people, dogs' noses are utilized around the world for their ability to sniff out certain scents. While some dogs are prone to tracing through sniffing, such as hounds, you can train any dog to sniff out certain items on command. To make learning this skill enjoyable for both you and your dog, play sniffing games. A combination of different games will ensure both you and your dog do not become bored of the routine.

Sausage Trail

As with visual trails that humans follow to find their way, dogs often follow a similar distinct trail; however, they do so with their noses. Teach a dog to track a certain scent by using a trail game with a reward at the end. Prick a juicy sausage several times with a fork so that it releases some juice. Manually drag it around a lawn, never overlapping itself, and place it under a small upturned garbage can. Place your dog at the beginning of the trail and allow it to begin tracking the treat.

Treat Cups

Much like the human "shell game," using sight to determine which cup a small ball or object is under after it has been moved around, treat cups enable dogs to play the same game, just with scents. Place a treat under one of three upside-down cups. Move them around the floor several times, mixing them up so the dog no longer knows by sight which one contains a treat. Then ask the dog to find the treat--it will sniff out the food. This trains its nose to be increasingly sensitive to one scent.

Hiding Toys

Throw a ball or Frisbee with your dog several times in an area with underbrush or other objects close at hand. Then make a motion to throw the dog's toy again and while its back is turned, hide the toy under or beside a nearby object. Choose a spot where the dog can reach the toy by mouth, but where it is not clearly visible. As the dog bounds back to you, show it that you do not have its toy. The dog will then have to use its nose to find the nearby toy. Resume the game of throwing it again after the dog has found it.

Tossing Scents

Tossing scents on the ground is an effective way to create a simple game out of sniffing, in any place you are with your dog. Allow your dog to mill around you, perhaps sniffing where you are sitting. While it has its back turned, scatter a few treats in different areas for the dog to find. While it may have heard the sounds of the treats falling, with multiple ones the dog will have to use its nose, not its ears, to find them.

How to Stop Your Puppy From Growling at You

How to Stop Your Puppy From Growling at You

Puppies growl for a multitude of reasons. If your puppy is constantly growling directly at you, it is not respecting you as its owner and leader. Even if it growls only in playful situations, the behavior needs to be stopped, because growling is often a precurser to aggression. There are several ways you can identify the cause of growling and stop this behvavior in your puppy before it leads to a more serious problem.

Instructions

    1

Identify the cause of your puppy's growling. It is important to know why your puppy is growling at you before you can try to fix the problem. Look for certain actions that cause your puppy to growl at you. In many cases, puppies growl at their owners when they think their food or toys are threatened, when they are playing, or when they are scared or upset.

    2

Address food-related growling immediately. If your dog growls at you when you approach its food bowl, you need to address the issue before the dog begins biting. Start by handling the food before putting it in the bowl and hand feeding food and snacks. This will make your dog more comfortable with the idea of you touching its food. Then test your dog's comfort level by handling its food while it is in the bowl. Continue handling your dog's food this way until the growling stops. Then give lots of praise.

    3

Assert your dominance as your dog's leader. Dogs should view their owners as their "pack leaders"; otherwise they think they are in charge and stop listening to and respecting you. One of the ways that dogs try to show they are in charge is by growling. If your dog growls at you. make sure you are always showing the dog you are its superior. Walk through doors first, eat before your dog does, and make it sleep on the floor instead of your bed. As your dog begins to understand that you are the dominant one, it will stop growling at you.

    4

Punish your puppy accordingly when it growls at you. If your dog begins aggressively growling, you should give it time to calm down by crating it or placing it in a restricted area. Do not yell at or scold it, because this aggressive and angry behavior can make your dog think it is okay to continue to act aggressively. Wait until your dog has calmed down before releasing it.
