Ways to Crate and Housebreak a Dog

Ways to Crate and Housebreak a Dog

Dogs are inherently clean animals. It is in their instinct to keep their living environment as clean as possible. In the wild, the mother would teach her puppies where to go to the toilet. In the domestic environment, that becomes our job. Crate training is the process of helping your dog adjust to spending time in a restricted space. Crates are useful for transporting your dog and for establishing a specific sleeping area. You can integrate crate training into general house training.

Make the Crate a "Happy Place"

Open the door to the crate and place some of your dog's favorite toys inside. Leave the door open and allow the dog to explore the crate. As soon as the dog shows any curiosity toward the crate, reinforce this by saying "good dog" in a friendly and encouraging voice.

Reward Curiosity

When the dog goes inside the crate, give her a treat and issue praise. This builds positive associations with entering the crate in the dog's mind. "...Many people assume that it is essential to get dog training tips prior to getting their pets. A number of people could find this exciting but a lot of people may agree that this is a really good tip to follow. The condition with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be cautious of them. Eventually, they would abandon their pets in order to reestablish their past lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they should consider and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These hints may be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to carry out appropriate dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of relaxed companionship with your ".... If only good things happen when she goes in the crate, she'll be only too pleased to go in when you want her to.

Set Crate Routines

Your dog is less likely to have an accident in her crate because the instinct to keep immediate living quarters clean is strong. Always let your dog into the garden as soon as they are out of the crate. This gives her the chance to relieve herself if she's been waiting. She'll get into the habit of going to the toilet once out of the crate.

Remove Barriers to Success

Put your dog in the gaden before he is likely to need the toilet.
Put your dog in the gaden before he is likely to need the toilet.

Make it as easy as possible for your dog to go to the toilet in the right place. It's easier to reinforce good behavior than to correct bad behavior. Leave the door open after your dog has had a drink. Put her toys near the door to encourage her to be in "the right place at the right time."

Monitor Your Dog's Habits

Watch how your dog behaves before toileting. Dogs typically sniff the ground and walk around in circles before going. Some dogs may scratch at the door. Make a list of things that you dog does when he needs to go. If you spot any of these signs, open the door.

Ignore Accidents

Your dog can't link two separate events together, she can only form direct associations between actions and consequences. If you come home and find a mess on the floor, punishing the dog is futile. The mess is history to the dog. She will not link what she did two hours ago with your reaction. If you see your dog about to have an accident, distract her. Call her or pick her up and, if necessary, put her outside. If it's too late, don't get angry. Your dog may associate your anger with the act of going to the toilet in general, rather than the act of going in the wrong place. This may cause toilet anxiety.

Reward Progress

Every step toward housebreaking should be encouraged. If your dog is in the garden and happens to urinate, give him a treat. If your dog voluntarily goes into the crate, give a treat.

How to Stop a Dog From Eating Things on the Ground

How to Stop a Dog From Eating Things on the Ground

Some dogs can't resist eating things they see on the ground. Whether it's some carefully placed kibble or a pile of poop, they go for it just the same, giving owners horrible visions of vomit in the house and emergency surgery. To train your dog not to eat everything it sees on the ground, you'll need to set some boundaries and help it practice self-control. The command "leave it" is the most essential thing you'll need to teach it.

Instructions

    1

Train your dog to focus on you. It's okay if your dog sniffs and investigates things when you're on a walk, but the dog needs to know that when you call its name it needs to drop everything and pay attention to you. To train it to stop eating things on the ground, start by practicing commands that aren't specifically related to eating, such as "no" and "sit." Practice in diverse environments so your dog will learn to ignore distractions.

    2

Teach it the command "Leave it." Put the dog in a sit, then put something edible on the ground. If the dog attempts to eat it, say "leave it" forcefully. "...Many people assume that it can be necessary to get dog training tips earlier to acquiring their pets. Some individuals may find this interesting but a lot of people might agree that this is a very good tip to follow. The condition with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to take care of them. Ultimately, they would probably depart their pets in order to reestablish their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they should handle and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These suggestions can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to carry out proper dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of comfortable a relationship with your ".... If it refrains from eating, offer it a treat from your own hand. This will teach it to turn its attention on you when it hears the word "leave it." You can also say "out," "drop it" or anything else that makes sense to you. Whatever command you use, remain consistent. Make sure every human in the dog's family knows this command.

    3

Once your dog understands "leave it," move the training outside. Create an "obstacle course" by leaving treats in conspicuous places in your yard. Walk the dog around them on a short leash. If it attempts to eat the treats, say "leave it." Then offer it a treat from your own hand -- preferably a better treat than what's on the ground. This will teach the dog that the most reliable source of food is you, not the ground. If the dog continues to go after a treat, put it in a sit and keep it there until its attention has refocused on you.

    4

Teach your dog to keep its attention on you during walks by bringing a lot of treats with you. As you walk, periodically say your dog's name. When it looks up at you, reward it with a treat. Never reward it by dropping the treat on the ground -- this will just reinforce the behavior you want to stop.

    5

If your dog does eat something on the ground despite your commands, don't snatch it away immediately. This will teach it to eat things faster to keep you from taking them. Instead, remain calm and say "leave it" with a treat outstretched in your hand. This will encourage it to drop whatever it found and eat the treat. If the object it wanted to eat isn't unhealthy, you can let it continue eating it once the dog has focused its attention on you. This will reassure the dog that you're not out to take its food.
