How to Bring a 2nd Dog Into the House

How to Bring a 2nd Dog Into the House

Dogs are pack animals and establish their own hierarchy to reduce conflicts and increase collaboration between group members. At the same time, dogs are territorial and will go out of their way to defend their territory if they think another dog or animal is intruding. Before you bring a second dog into your household, you will need to prepare your pet to accept the new dog.

Instructions

    1

Understand the personality of your dog. If your dog is friendly toward other dogs, you should not face too many problems in getting your pet to accept the new dog.

    2

Find a dog that is compatible with your dog. The second dog should have the same energy levels as your dog and also be around the same size, so that they can play together without injuring each other. If the second dog is of the opposite gender, it helps to reduce friction between the dogs, advises Kathy Diamond Davis, an experienced dog trainer.

    3

Introduce the two dogs in a neutral setting, such as a park, animal shelter or neighbor's yard. This will prevent your dog from viewing the second dog as an intruder. Have another person with you to manage the second dog. Make sure that both dogs are leashed. It may help to initially let the dogs see each other through a fence before bringing them together.

    4

Allow the dogs to sniff each other once they are brought together. Reward them with a treat and praise both the dogs. This works as a positive reinforcement. If the dogs assume an aggressive posture, such raising their hackles, growling or baring teeth, immediately stop the interaction between them until they calm down. If your dog is well trained, you should not face a problem when you command it back down.

    5

Bring the second dog home when they are no longer aggressive toward or fearful of each other, and the sniffing has ceased. Sniffing is one way that dogs to check other canines out. Tail wagging indicates that the dogs are relaxed in each other's company

    6

Have individual feeding and water bowls, toys and sleeping areas for both dogs. This will prevent unnecessary territorial fights. Feed the dogs separately, preferably in different rooms. "...Lots of individuals believe the reason is crucial to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. Many people might find this fascinating but a lot of people can agree that this is a excellent tip to follow. The issue with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to be aware of them. Ultimately, they might depart their pets in order to retrieve their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they should consider and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These tips could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to carry out proper dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of peaceful a relationship with your ".... Keep the dogs apart initially, especially if you are planning to go out or are retiring to bed. Line a crate with a blanket for the new dog so that it feels safe in its new home.

    7

Support the dominant dog even if it is the new dog. Allow the dominant dog to play with a toy it wants or to choose the sleeping area it prefers. This will help establish a social hierarchy between the dogs and avert confrontation. A dominant dog believes it is the pack leader and will not give up its toys, will be the dog on top while playing and will walk in front of the other dog in the yard. The other dog will have no alternative but to submit. If both dogs are dominant, they will constantly try to take control, leading to fights to establish hierarchy, according to trainer Kathy Diamond Davis. Dogs cannot be equals, notes Judith Halliburton in "Raising Rover": "There has to be a dominant dog; there has to be a subordinate dog."

    8

Increase gradually the time the two dogs spend together. Stay around to supervise in case things get ugly. Once the dogs are comfortable with each other, are playing together and chasing each other, and have established a pack order, they will get along fine, according to Halliburton.

Ways to Work a Husky

Ways to Work a Husky

Siberian husky training is not a grueling, regimented routine if it is fun for the dog and the owner. Huskies thrive on positive reinforcement. Giving your dog positive rewards and affection rather than negative punishment increases the dog's willingness to learn and obey. Negative reinforcement too often involves catching your dog in the act, rather than teaching it to obey. When working your husky, never physically beat it as part of the training. Dogs know when you are unhappy with their behavior.

Black and White

    Huskies make loving family pets.
    Huskies make loving family pets.

When working your husky, keep things simple. The dog thinks in good and bad, not, "Well, if I do this, maybe this will happen." With dogs, there is no abstract thinking. The husky needs simple, direct instructions. The more direct and simple the command you give, the easier it is for the dog to obey. When you set yard boundaries, for instance, your reinforcement must be clear and consistent.

No Corrections

Positive reinforcement will earn you the respect of the husky.
Positive reinforcement will earn you the respect of the husky.

Never use corrections in a husky workout session. Corrections are negative reinforcement, and counterproductive to training. The dog responds to play and positive feedback. Correcting during a workout will confuse the dog and remove the play from the session. Training a dog takes patience; it is no exception with a husky. A typical husky workout can involve teaching it how to fetch, stay, go, hold and drop a ball, roll over and speak; all of this is play to the dog.

Exercise

Huskies want to pull; it is play for them.
Huskies want to pull; it is play for them.

Huskies love exercise; they are playful and want to run, jump and haul things for their owner. These dogs love to run and exercise outdoors, vigorously burning off energy. When a husky gets enough exercise, its energy is manageable. "...Many people think that it can be crucial to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. A number of people might discover this interesting but a lot of people may agree that this is a excellent tip to follow. The problem with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be cautious of them. Ultimately, they would abandon their pets in order to reestablish their old lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they have got to consider and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These suggestions can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct correct dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of peaceful friendship with your ".... Huskies are natural jumpers and easily excited; routine exercise reduces this energy. When a husky's regimen includes pulling a sled or cart, the dog receives not only a purpose, but an outlet for playing.

Respect Training

Huskies will challenge a handler for leadership.
Huskies will challenge a handler for leadership.

Getting the husky to respect you is necessary if the dog is going to work for you. You must establish yourself as the leader. You put yourself in the position of leader by speaking authoritatively, giving simple commands and rewarding the dog even when it doesn't obey the command exactly. When you correct the dog during a workout, change the command language or fail to speak with authority, the husky will not respect you and will challenge your leadership repeatedly.

How to Train Dogs With Prong Collars

How to Train Dogs With Prong Collars

A prong collar, also called a pinch collar because of the pinch it delivers, is a dog training aid for control. The prong collar is a series of interlocking links. Each link has prongs that insert through the link ahead of it, and extend toward the center of the loop. There is a short chain section with a ring for lead connection that swivels so it won't tangle, and an "O" ring for a "dead" connection to a leash. When on the dog, the link prongs protrude toward the neck. It is best used on dogs with heavily muscled necks who pull through other training aids like simple chain (choke) collars, harnesses and martingales.

Instructions

    1

Pick the right size of collar for your dog. Pick extra heavy for very large, muscular dogs such as Alaskan malamutes, rottweilers and pit bulls. Pick heavy for large, strong dogs such as Doberman pinschers, German shepherds and Belgian malinois. Pick light for more delicate breeds such as standard poodles, basenjis and beagles. Measure your dog's neck at the very top, just under the jaw line to over the top behind the ears, and back to under the jaw again. "...Lots of individuals consider that it is essential to get dog training tips preceding to having their pets. A number of people may find this interesting but a lot of people can recognize that this is a really good tip to follow. The condition with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to be cautious of them. Finally, they would probably give up their pets in order to bring back their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they should take care of and if they have the time to train their dogs. These guidelines could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct appropriate dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of relaxed friendship with your ".... This is where the prong collar should sit when properly placed. Buy a collar that is 2 inches larger than the measurement of your dog's neck.

    2

Choose between a standard prong collar and a quick-release style. The standard prong collar requires the user to open the collar by dislodging the prongs of any one of the links from the link in front of it, place it on the dog's neck and re-insert the prongs into the front link to close it up again. The quick-release prong collar has a snap connector in the chain section to open and close at the clasp instead of opening the links. Make sure either style of prong collar rides just behind the ears and under the jaw line at the top of the neck.

    3

Attach a lead to one of the rings on the chain portion of the collar when in training mode. When your dog does not pay attention to a command and you need to correct it, give the lead a short snap to make the collar constrict and "pinch." Release the pressure immediately. That is very important. The action should be a snap, not a pull, tug or hold.

    4

Attach the lead to both "O" rings when not training so the collar will not constrict. For further protection against accidental corrections when not training, or in a situation where the dog will be anxious and possibly lunge against the collar, reverse the "circle" and turn the prongs toward the outside of the collar.

How to Test Service Dogs

How to Test Service Dogs

There are several service organizations across the country, and each of them requires slightly different skills for certifying a therapy dog. However, most of the desired skills are similar, beginning with the skills required on the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test: sitting for greetings, sitting for petting, allowing grooming, walking politely on a leash, walking through a crowd, staying, downing, coming when called, ignoring distractions, walking past another dog and staying calm for three minutes of supervised separation. Beyond that, dogs are required to demonstrate skills necessary to the type of therapy dog they will be, such as navigating a grocery store or responding properly to noises. "...Lots of individuals think that it is crucial to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. Some people could find this exciting but a lot of people could concur that this is a really good tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to be cautious of them. Eventually, they would give up their pets in order to bring back their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they have got to handle and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These hints can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to execute proper dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your "....

Instructions

Testing Service Dogs

    1

Observe the dog during a greeting routine. The dog must be able to sit politely while the tester shakes hands with the owner. Then, the dog must sit politely while the tester pets it. Finally, the dog must tolerate grooming, which includes brushing, teeth examination and other examinations, such as feet or ears. If the dog jumps on you, mouths you or barks at you, it's not ready to be a therapy dog. It should be able to calmly tolerate all interactions and seek out petting.

    2

Observe the dog's leash skills. The dog should be able to walk politely on a leash during a left turn, right turn, about face turn and stop. It should also be able to walk politely through a crowd, ignoring people, food and other pets. This could take place in a crowded parking lot, grocery store or other crowded area that the person may need to navigate. The dog also needs to show it can navigate a street, including stopping for traffic.

    3

Make the owner demonstrate that the dog can do a sit, down, heel, stay for at least 10 seconds and recall on command. Without those basic skills, the dog isn't ready for service work.

    4

Bring a well-behaved dog to test the dog's reaction to other dogs. The dog should be able to walk past another dog and sit politely at the owner's side for long enough for you to shake hands while your dog is also politely sitting at your side. The dog can be interested but cannot pull toward or bark at the tester dog.

    5

Test the dog's ability to handle distractions, such as loud noises, joggers, crutches and wheelchairs. The dog shouldn't be afraid of anything because it needs to help its owner no matter what the distraction.

    6

Hold onto the dog while the owner walks out of sight. The dog should remain calm, even if it is intently looking for the owner.

    7

Place food and toys on the ground and have the owner walk the dog past. The dog should be able to ignore the temptation, no matter how close the owner walks, though the owner may give the "leave it" command if necessary.

    8

Observe the dog in a car. The dog should be able to enter the car only when instructed and remain calm the entire time in the car. You may also observe the dog in other confined situations, such as elevators, as well.
