How to Condition a Dog on Hills, Stairs, and Agility

How to Condition a Dog on Hills, Stairs, and Agility

You want to condition your dog, but you're not certain how to do it. "...Some people believe the reason is crucial to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. Some individuals might discover this interesting but a lot of people may concur that this is a great tip to follow. The situation with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be cautious of them. In the end, they could give up their pets in order to bring back their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they have to consider and if they have the time to train their dogs. These tips may be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to execute proper dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of peaceful friendship with your ".... So you plan to work on hills, stairs and agility drills to get your dog in shape. The difficulty is that conditioning your dog is a slow and time-intensive process and requires patience from you. Just as you wouldn't expect an overweight and out-of-shape human to compete in a marathon, you can't expect a dog who has never done these exercises to any great degree to run them without conditioning. You will have to start slowly and build up.

Instructions

Condition on Hills

    1

Bring your dog to the veterinarian for a full checkup to ensure that it is healthy enough for conditioning.

    2

Take your dog for walks less than 1 mile. If your dog has trouble walking a mile, cut the distance to where the dog can easily walk that distance.

    3

Build up the mileage slowly. Your dog needs to get comfortable with walking before trying hills.

    4

Climb a small hill. Take your dog for a walk where there is a small hill, and walk up it. Go at a pace that is comfortable for the dog.

    5

Increase the size of the hill and the distance traveled slowly. If your dog has difficulty, decrease the distance or the size of the hill.

Condition on Stairs

    6

Put a collar and leash on your dog, and slowly walk it up one flight of stairs. If the dog has difficulty, choose a smaller number of stairs to walk up.

    7

Walk down the steps carefully. Do not run, as this can cause injuries.

    8

Walk one flight of stairs each day for a week.

    9

Increase the number of stairs to walk, and work on that for another week.

    10

Continue to increase the number of stairs each week.

Conditioning in Agility

    11

    Teach your dog the obstacles.

    12

Learn to run the agility course.

    13

Run your dog through an agility course made up of fewer than 10 obstacles. The dog should be able to complete it without signs of fatigue or overexertion (panting, slowing or stumbling). If your dog does show signs, reduce the number of obstacles and work on them slowly.

    14

Run your dog on a course made up of 15 obstacles or more, once your dog is comfortable with running courses of 10 obstacles or fewer.

How to Train Your 1 Year Old Dog

How to Train Your 1 Year Old Dog

By the age of 1, most breeds of dogs are considered adults and should have had some experience with training. However, some dogs this age require training for either behavioral problems or simply to learn tricks. "...Many individuals assume that it is essential to get dog training tips preceding to getting their pets. Lots of people could find this exciting but a lot of people can agree that this is a excellent tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they may be not suitable to be aware of them. Finally, they could give up their pets in order to retrieve their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they have to take care of and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These suggestions will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct proper dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... In many cases, a 1-year-old dog can be trained without the help of a professional handler or obedience school. Positive reinforcement and clicker training are the most common techniques used by dog owners. No matter the method used to train a dog, patience is vital.

Instructions

General Techniques

    1

Use a clicker trainer to reward your dog's correct behavior. A clicker is a small plastic device that emits a specific sound when pressed. Each time your dog follows a command, press the clicker and reward your dog with praise or a small treat. Use only positive reinforcement when clicker training. Do not respond to negative behavior.

    2

Exercise your dog before each training session to help relieve excessive energy. Young dogs and large dogs require a more intense exercise session. Exercise will enable your dog to concentrate on the training session.

    3

Make sure the training sessions are short and light so your dog does not lose interest. Try using 10-minute training sessions two to three times a day. Train your dog before mealtime so it will be more motivated by treats. Training sessions should take place in your dog's home instead of an unfamiliar location such as a dog park.

    4

Repeat the same verbal and physical command for a particular training exercise. Do not try to use multiple commands for a single trick or behavior because it will confuse your dog and make training less effective.

Tricks and Behavior

    5

Train your 1-year-old dog to sit by squatting or kneeling next to it. Place your hand on your dog's lower back. Slightly press down and say, "Sit." Reward your dog each time it sits.

    6

Teach your dog the down command after it has mastered the sit command. Place your right hand on your dog's right shoulder and gently push. Take your dog's left paw in your left hand and say, "Down." Reward your dog when it gets into the down position.

    7

Teach your dog to relieve itself outdoors or on training pads. Feed your dog on a set schedule so you can better predict when it will need to relieve itself. Watch your dog for signs, such as sniffing or scratching the carpet, that indicate it may need a bathroom break. Take your dog to its designated bathroom area each time it exhibits such behaviors. Praise and reward your dog for relieving itself outdoors or on training pads.

    8

Deter destructive chewing to protect both your dog and personal items. Give your dog chew toys to keep it from chewing other items. Make sure inappropriate chew items are placed out of the reach of your dog. Spray chewing deterrents on items that cannot be moved. If you catch your dog chewing an item it should not be, firmly say "No," take the item from its mouth and replace it with a chew toy.

Weight Pulling Exercises for Dogs

Like humans, dogs can increase their strength by putting their muscles under resistance. Because dogs do not have hands to lift weights with, they must pull weights to build muscle strength. If you want to show off the strength of your dog, you can enter the dog into a competition.

Suitable Breeds

Some breeds have been selectively bred to pull weight, such as huskies. However, dogs not bred for this can still do so, but you will have to work harder to train them. Check with a veterinarian before engaging your pet in weight pulling.

Dogs from the working and herding groups are the most willing to engage in weight pulling. "...Some people consider that it must be essential to get dog training tips prior to getting their pets. Many people may find this fascinating but a lot of people may agree that this is a very good tip to follow. The situation with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to take care of them. Eventually, they might depart their pets in order to retrieve their old lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they should take care of and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These guidelines will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct suitable dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of peaceful companionship with your ".... Working dogs include the Saint Bernard and herding dogs include the Border Collie. This exercise can improve the dog's overall well-being.

The Cart

Start with your dog performing weight-exercises indoors, on a carpet, so the dog does not hurt his paws. The cart should have a top low to the ground and flat. The larger the wheels, the easier the dog can pull the cart. Use the weight-lifting plates people use because you can easily measure the weight the dog pulls. However, anything heavy will work, as long as it is stable in the cart, such as bricks or cinder blocks.

Harnass

Some dogs may not like the harness. Have the dog regularly wear the harness until it becomes accustomed to it, rewarding the dog with treats whenever it wears it. Once you put the harness on the dog and attach it to the cart, encourage it to come to you. If the dog does not move, end the session and try again another day. Encourage the dog each time and give it treats when it performs well.

Competition

In weight-pulling competitions, each dog pulls weight and the dog that pulls the most wins. Cart-pulling is divided into rounds; the amount of weight pulled increases each round. Dogs pull the wheeled cart on dirt, though dogs sometimes pull it on carpet. The dogs must pull the weight past a finish line to win and has 60 seconds to pull the weight. However, dogs can get two retries if they become tangled in the leash or have a false start. The dogs are weighed and each dog competes with others in its weight class.

How to Break a Puppy From Going Potty in Their Crate

How to Break a Puppy From Going Potty in Their Crate

Puppies: They are cute, cuddly and messy. When you bring a puppy into your home, you accept the responsibility of caring for it, and that means cleaning up its indoor accidents until it is fully housetrained. Crating your puppy can be an effective method of housetraining because, in most cases, puppies hate to have accidents where they sleep. "...Many individuals believe that it must be crucial to get dog training tips earlier to having their pets. Some people may find this exciting but a lot of people can recognize that this is a top notch tip to follow. The problem with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be aware of them. Ultimately, they might abandon their pets in order to retrieve their past lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they have got to handle and if they have the time to train their dogs. These tips will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to execute suitable dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of peaceful companionship with your ".... Your pup doesn't enjoy being covered in urine or feces any more than you enjoy giving it a bath each time you come home. Some puppies aren't able to hold it, however, and urinate in their crates frequently. You can take steps to break this habit.

Instructions

    1

Create a regular feeding and potty schedule for your puppy as soon as you bring it home. Puppies that are fed at regular times of day are easier to potty train because their schedules help their systems to regulate. Let your puppy outside half an hour after feeding, immediately when you come home, just before bed and every hour or so in between until your puppy's bladder is large enough to wait for longer periods.

    2

Make a loud noise to interrupt your puppy when you catch it having an accident in your house or in its crate. Don't get angry and punish your dog or you risk making it afraid of you or of urinating in your presence. When you catch your puppy in the act, simply interrupt it and rush it outside.

    3

Reward your puppy for finishing its business outside. Use treats and excited praise. This lets your puppy know it did something right and gives it a chance to learn where you want it to go to the bathroom. Praise your puppy every time it goes in the yard instead of the crate. Be especially generous with your rewards if your puppy has held it for a few hours or asks to go outside on its own.

    4

Let your puppy outside just before putting it in its crate. Walk it on a leash to its spot in the yard. This will help it to understand that this is a potty trip, not a play trip. Give your pup a chance to empty it bladder and bowels.

    5

Hire a dog walker or ask a friend or family member to stop by and let your puppy out a few times each day, if you are unable to do so yourself. Don't leave your puppy alone in the crate for hours on end or it will have an accident.

    6

Monitor your puppy's water intake before placing it in its crate. Don't restrict your puppy's access to water, but be aware of how much it consumed so that you can let it outside before locking it up. The more a puppy drinks before going in the crate, the more likely it is to have an accident.

    7

Make your puppy a vet appointment if it is reliably housetrained but still soils the crate. A fully housetrained puppy can wait three or four hours between trips outside and can let you know when it needs to go out. If your puppy still has accidents in the crate, it might have a health problem that should be addressed by a vet. Behavioral issues, such as separation anxiety, can also be a factor. A vet can help you determine possible causes and find a solution.

How to Train Your Dog to Respect Your Boundaries

How to Train Your Dog to Respect Your Boundaries

If you've had trouble getting an unruly pooch or hyperactive puppy to respect boundaries, there are a number of steps you can take to improve your canine's behavior. Through a practice known as boundary training, you can make sure your pooch never strays from established boundaries. Certain pet owners may be apprehensive about engaging in boundary training in light of the perceived difficulty, but with a little consistency, you'll have your dog respecting boundaries in a timely manner.

Instructions

    1

Place physical barriers around the boundary you'd like your dog to respect. These barriers can come in the form of baby gates, rope or plastic cones.

    2

Attach your dog's leash to her collar. Take your dog for a walk around the outskirts of the sealed-off area. Whenever she attempts to cross the boundary, lightly tug on her leash, point your finger directly at her and deliver a firm "NO." Repeat this process until your dog appears to understand that the area is off-limits. Whenever your dog promptly obeys your command, reward her with a small treat.

    3

Place a treat or one of your dog's favorite toys on the other side of the boundary. Continue to lead her around the outskirts of the boundary. Once again, administer a light leash tug and a firm "NO" whenever the dog attempts to cross the boundary. Continue in this fashion until the dog understands that she is still not allowed to cross the barrier.

    4

Release your dog from her leash. In much the same fashion as the previous steps, motion for your dog to follow you around the outskirts of the boundary. If she shows any interest in crossing the boundary, tell her "NO" and reward her with a treat if she obeys. If she chooses to ignore your command and cross the boundary, repeat the second step until you feel the dog is ready to move on.
