How to Fill Out an AKC Tracking Entry Form

The American Kennel Club offers different tracking event for dogs. Your dog must be certified by an AKC judge before he can enter a tracking test. You will receive tracking certificates after completion of the test that will allow you to enter your dog into other tracking events. To become certified, your dog will complete a local tracking course under the observation of an AKC judge. You can find these judges through the AKC webpage.

Instructions

    1

Visit the AKC's webpage to find a local tracking judge (see Resources). Call or email a judge in your area to set up a tracking test. If you do not have a judge in your area, call the Companion Events Department at 919-816-3521 and ask about obtaining a hardship certificate.

    2

Enter the tracking test. Your dog will have to complete a regulation TD track under the observation of an AKC judge. If he completes the track, the judge will issue four certifications that are good for the next year. You will then be able to enter your dog into tracking events.

    3

Click on "Events" on the top of the AKC webpage to find a local tracking event. Choose "Event and Award Search."

    4

Choose the "Tracking" tab above the map. Click on your state and any surrounding states you want your dog to compete in. You can click up to 10 states and search through the database.

    5

Review events in your search. Click on the links to go to the local club's webpage. There are different types of entry forms. In some cases, you will be able to print off the form and complete it at home. If there is no entry form available online, call the local club and ask for it to send you a form.

    6

Complete the form filling in your dog's AKC registration number and tracking certificate. You may also have to fill in other physical descriptions about your dog, such as jumping height or weight. A tracking certificate is required for each AKC tracking event.

How to Keep Dogs Away From Chipmunks

How to Keep Dogs Away From Chipmunks

Dogs are closely related to wolves, coyotes and other carnivorous canids. "...Some people think that it can be crucial to get dog training tips prior to getting their pets. Some people could find this fascinating but a lot of people could concur that this is a really good tip to follow. The challenge with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be aware of them. Ultimately, they could depart their pets in order to retrieve their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they need to consider and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These hints could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct correct dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of peaceful friendship with your ".... Consequently, they're hard-wired to chase after wildlife. Animals such as chipmunks are especially appealing to dogs because chasing them is fun. They run quickly, dart around trees and can provide a dog with several minutes of amusement. But chasing chipmunks is not just dangerous to the chipmunks, it also places your dog at risk of being bitten and developing illnesses carried by chipmunks. With careful training and planning, you can keep your dog away from chipmunks.

Keeping Chipmunks Away

Keeping chipmunks out of your yard in the first place is one of the simplest ways to keep your dog away from them. Eliminate wood piles, thick brush and other dark piles of rubbish that could serve as chipmunk nesting locations. Place a mechanical owl in a prominent location in your backyard. These wildlife deterrents, available at most home supply stores, can scare chipmunks away from your yard without harming them. Place castor oil or garlic in locations where you frequently see chipmunks. These substances repel chipmunks without poisoning them.

Exercise

Many dogs chase chipmunks simply because it's fun. This kind of play provides the dog an outlet it doesn't often get elsewhere. Give your dog a lot of exercise and it will be less likely to chase every moving object. Dogs need, at minimum, 30 minutes of exercise a day, and running around in the backyard usually isn't sufficient. Take your dog for long walks, throw balls and Frisbees and engage your dog's mind by teaching it new tricks.

Training

Although it can be difficult, it's possible to train your dog to ignore chipmunks. Take your dog to an area where there are likely to be chipmunks and keep it on a leash. When you see a chipmunk, say your dog's name and give it one of its favorite treats. Repeat this activity five to 10 times each day. After a week or so, begin giving your dog a treat only if it does not attempt to chase the chipmunk, and then progress to giving your dog a treat only when it does not look at the chipmunk. This helps your dog associate chipmunks with treats rather than with playtime and encourages your dog to seek your guidance when it sees a wild animal.

Activities to Avoid

Games that encourage predatory behavior can encourage your dog to chase chipmunks. Don't play chase games with your dog, and avoid playing tug of war if your dog is especially interested in wild animals. These games encourage your dog to chase and guard objects, which can encourage it to kill wild animals.

How to Restrain a Boxer Dog

How to Restrain a Boxer Dog

All dogs owners should have the ability to restrain their dogs. You may need to restrain your boxer during a high-stress situation, so practice the technique in advance. This way, the animal will be comfortable with the restraint, will understand you are the boss, and will not try to fight you. Practicing restraint is especially useful for boxer owners, because if they're not used to being restrained, these dogs can be stubborn and wriggly. Familiarizing both you and your dog with this technique will ensure that you are prepared if you need to use physical restraint in an emergency.

Instructions

    1

Ensure that your boxer has basic obedience training. A dog that obeys commands such as "sit" and "stay" will be much easier to restrain.

    2

Attend socialization lessons with your boxer. This will help the dog behave and stay calm around other people and animals. If your boxer obeys your commands and stays calm, fewer situations will arise that require physical restraint.

    3

Practice restraining your boxer when both you and the dog are calm. This way, the dog will become comfortable with physical restraint and will not associate it only with negative experiences, such as getting a shot at the vet's office.

    4

Talk to your dog in a quiet, soothing voice. This will have a calming influence and will help prevent your boxer from resisting you. Keep talking in the same soothing tone throughout the restraint.

    5

Position yourself so you will be able to restrain your dog comfortably. Lean over your dog, and drape your arm over its shoulder.

    6

Apply minimum pressure. Pressure will encourage your boxer to wiggle and fight back, and you could both get hurt. Using very little pressure should encourage your dog to relax and comply.

    7

Watch for signs that your boxer is becoming restless and may want to escape the restraint. If necessary, restrain your dog by draping one arm over its shoulder and the other arm over its bottom.

How to Stop a Dog From Growling When Playing

How to Stop a Dog From Growling When Playing

Growling is one of the ways that dogs communicate. When playing a game of tug of war with a toy, growling signifies that they are willing to be aggressive in order to win the game. Some dogs need to be trained to understand when growling is appropriate. A dog should growl when there is imminent danger, but should not get overly excited during play to the point of aggression. A puppy's growl is cute, but an adult dog's growl when playing might indicate that it is ready to bite. This type of aggression should be curbed before it spins out of control.

Instructions

    1

Observe the dog when it is playing to see when it begins to show aggression. A little growling during play is normal, but watch carefully to see if the behavior is escalating into forceful aggression.

    2

Stop the activity immediately when the dog growls. If you are playing tug of war, take the toy away and speaking in a sharp tone, say "No" or whatever command you normally use to discipline the dog.

    3

Stand up if you were in a sitting position; face the dog, but do not engage him. Growling is sometimes a dominance issue in a dog with an "alpha" personality. The object is to establish yourself as the more dominant personality and let it know that you are in control.

    4

Alternatively, take the toy and walk away from the dog to indicate that the play session is over. Use discretion. This may work better with puppies rather than adult dogs. When dealing with an adult dog, avoid turning your back on it when it is overexcited or overly aggressive.

    5

Praise the dog when it calms down. Continue to reward nonaggressive behavior when playing and stopping the play session if the dog resumes growling.
