How to Train an Older Heeler

How to Train an Older Heeler

Heelers, also known as Australian cattle dogs, are highly intelligent dogs with a strong will that can make training them fun and easy -- as long as it's done the right way. Dealing with an older dog can be more challenging than training a puppy, as an older heeler will already have established habits both good and bad. Using these established habits when working with the dog can make training easier, and understanding the dog's point of view is key. Old dogs can be taught new tricks, however, and patience and understanding will result in a lifelong companion.

Instructions

    1

Establish your dog's behavior patterns, and decide what needs to be worked on. Adult dogs come from a variety of different backgrounds, and understanding the heeler's good and bad habits will make it easier to establish where training should begin. If the dog has not been taught the basics that all puppies should know -- such as housebreaking -- that's a place to start.

    2

Establish a relationship with your heeler. These are dogs that will bond very, very strongly to one individual in the family, and once that bond is created, they can go from an obstinate, headstrong dog to one that is eager to please their chosen person. Spend time with the heeler, pet him and play with him, make being around you a pleasant experience. This will not happen overnight -- and may take weeks with an older dog -- but will be worth the time and effort and is a process that can be done alongside training.

    3

Get the heeler used to a crate. This can be a valuable step; if the dog isn't housebroken, it can make this process easier, as an adult dog will be able to hold his bladder until taken outside and will quickly learn not to soil his bedding, but in the appropriate spot. Even if the dog is housebroken, establishing his crate as his own den will give him a sense of belonging in a new household. For an adult dog that has been adopted, rescued or rehomed, this can go a long way in making him comfortable.

    4

Reinforce any good behavior consistently. Adult heelers are always observing and always learning, so giving positive feedback, praise and petting when they have done good will go a long way in establishing the relationship between you and your dog. Adult dogs aren't like puppies, and intelligent adults like heelers don't miss a thing.

    5

Exercise, and exercise often. Heelers are bred to be hard-working herding dogs, and will need several hours of hard exercise each day in order to wear them out. While puppies will be asleep after short bursts of energy, adults will need long walks, runs or games in the yard. A tired heeler will be a much more obedient one, and will be much more likely to listen to commands if he's not bouncing off the walls with energy. Set him up to be successful.

    6

Make him work for the treats. As working dogs, an adult heeler will thrive when given a job to do. Learning his training is his job, and treat it as such. Within this job, set up a clear reward system. When he succeeds, he gets praise and a treat. When he fails, he gets nothing. This will not only help him learn faster, but will reinforce your status as the alpha who is responsible for giving out rewards and punishments.

How to Keep Animals From Chewing Car Wiring

How to Keep Animals From Chewing Car Wiring

Exposed car wires can become dangerous to humans and animals that you are transporting in your vehicle. If you have a pet that you are driving in your car, and you cannot keep the car wiring out of reach, train your dog to avoid the cords and wires so that it does not accidentally chew on them and get electrocuted. Chewed car wiring can also damage the wires in your car, causing parts to malfunction.

Instructions

    1

Use electrical tape to hold car wiring out of your animal's reach. You can tape the wiring to a side panel somewhere and cover the wires at the ends with the tape to keep them from sticking out. When wires stick out or down is when animals become attracted to them, making it easy for them to grab onto with their mouths.

    2

Spray anti-chew solution onto car wiring. Make sure the spray is safe to use on wires first. The anti-chew solution produces a foul smell and yucky taste for animals, which works to turn animals off from the item they want to chew on. Anti-chew sprays are not always effective, however, because some animals do not mind the bitter taste they give off. Another alternative is to create your own spray using red cayenne pepper and water or hot pepper sauce and water.

    3

Do not let your dog get away with chewing on the wires. As soon as you see your pet becoming interested in the car wiring, redirect the dog's attention to something else. If you catch your dog in the act of chewing, correct the behavior by saying "no" with a stern voice and relocating the dog so it is not within reach of the cords. You can also redirect the dog's attention by giving it a chew toy instead of the wires. Never hit your dog or use physical means for correcting behavior.

    4

Place cord covers over the wiring. Cord covers protect animals from having access to the actual wire because the cover blocks them instead.

    5

Distract your dog with toys or treats. A bone filled with peanut butter will surely be more stimulating and interesting than the car wires. "...Most people think the reason is essential to get dog training tips preceding to having their pets. Lots of people might find this exciting but a lot of people may recognize that this is a excellent tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be aware of them. Eventually, they might get away from their pets in order to retrieve their old lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they need to consider and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These suggestions will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. How to Train With Chain-link Dog Collars

How to Train With Chain-link Dog Collars

A choke or slip collar is a tool used by trainers to work with dogs on obedience. It is simply a length of chain with two rings that fits around the dog's neck. A lead attached to the chains causes the chain to tighten or loosen when pulled on or released. A choke chain allows the dog to have control over its training, as it is its behavior that causes the collar to tighten and release.

Instructions

    1

Choose a choke, or slip, chain that fits your dog. Measure around your dog's neck and add 2 or 3 inches. The chain should fit your dog so that it's not so tight that it chokes the dog all the time or so loose that it can get out of it.

    2

Attach the collar to your dog's neck so that when you pull on the leash, it tightens, but when you release the ring, it loosens just as quickly. The chain has two rings. One is live, or tightens the chain when tugged on when the chain is around the dog's neck. The other is dead, or does not tighten. The live ring should be on the dog's right side and on top of its neck.

    3

Teach your dog to heel by allowing the dog to be in charge of its training. There is no need to tug or yank on the leash. Hold the leash firmly with 6 inches of leeway. If the dog tries to run or lunges, the tug against the leash will tighten the collar. When the dog corrects its behavior, the collar will loosen again.

    4

Train your dog to sit with a choke collar by taking up the slack of the leash and tugging it up gently. This will force the dog's head up and its hind quarters down as you say "sit."

    5

Praise your dog and offer it a treat when it behaves obediently. When the dog misbehaves, correct it immediately and consistently.

Training a Labradoodle to Go Up & Down Stairs

Training a Labradoodle to Go Up & Down Stairs

In the world of designer dog breeds, the Labradoodle is a popular choice. This family-friendly companion dog combines the best characteristics of the Labrador retriever and the standard poodle. A medium to large dog, the Labradoodle is friendly, energetic and intelligent, making it easily trainable. Training a Labradoodle to go up and down stairs is important. For puppies, stair training decreases the chance of injury, and for adult dogs, stair training helps for those that have never encountered stairs or have a fear of them.

Early Exposure

For Labradoodle puppies, early exposure is key to training on the stairs. You want your puppy to be familiar and gain the experience necessary to navigate the stairs. Introduce your Labradoodle puppy to the stairs starting at 16 weeks old. However, training a Labradoodle to go up and down stairs can occur at any age. If you're adopting an adult dog that has never had an experience with stairs or one that has fear or anxiety over stairs, training is still possible. Expose your Labradoodle to stairs as soon as possible to increase positive associations.

Warnings

While early stair exposure is recommended for Labradoodles, you dont want to introduce young puppies to stairs too early. Puppies shouldn't be allowed to go up and down stairs before 16 weeks, as their muscles, joints and bones are still developing, and injuries can occur. If your Labradoodle puppy is under one year, never leave it to navigate or play on the stairs alone. Accidents and injuries, such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysfunction, can occur if the dog is allowed to run up and down stairs or play near stairs without supervision.

Methods

To train your Labradoodle to go up and down the stairs, build a positive association. Turn stair training into a game with treats and rewards. Verbal praise and positive reinforcement are highly recommended for successful training. Start at the bottom of the stairs and train your Labradoodle to climb up the stairs before climbing down. Work with one step, using a treat to coax the dog to climb the step. Gradually and slowly build your Labradoodles confidence, working with one step at a time and slowly adding more steps. When your dog feels confident going up the stairs, use treats to teach your Labradoodle to go down the stairs.

Considerations

Remember that training your Labradoodle to go up and down the stairs is a form of exercise. Due to the high-energy nature of the Labradoodle, consider other exercise that the dog is getting throughout the day, in addition to stair training. This will prevent you from overexercising your Labradoodle. "...Lots of individuals assume that it can be essential to get dog training tips earlier to having their pets. Some people could find this interesting but a lot of people can agree that this is a wonderful tip to follow. The problem with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to be aware of them. Ultimately, they might give up their pets in order to reestablish their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they need to take care of and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These suggestions could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to execute suitable dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of relaxed friendship with your ".... If your dog has trouble going up and down stairs, always consult your veterinarian to rule out any medical problems. If you rule out medical conditions but your dog still has problems navigating the steps, anxiety may be the cause. Never rush your dog into stair training, as this can produce further anxiety. It may take a few weeks for your dog to become comfortable. Positive encouragement and reinforcement will encourage advancement in training.
