How to Train a Puppy Cattle Dog

Australian cattle dogs, also known as Blue Heelers, are an intensely smart, driven, breed of dog found in the herding family. They were originally bred from collies, Dalmatians and Kelpies. These dogs are speckled or mottled in appearance and come in a variety of colors ranging from reds to blues and may have tan as well. Originally bred to assist cowhands working with cattle, these dogs tend to bite their herds to guide the cows in the direction desired. Potty Training a Lab Puppy

Labrador retrievers are the most popular dog breed in the United States for the 19th consecutive year, according to American Kennel Club's 2009 Registration Statistics report. They make excellent loyal family pets that are adaptable and outgoing. Thanks to their intelligence, labs are easily house-trained as long as training begins early and is consistent. The process must begin as soon as you bring your puppy home. Within a couple of months, the Labrador retriever puppy will be well on its way to being a house-trained family pet.

Purchase a small crate from a pet store before bringing puppy home. Labrador retrievers grow into large dogs, but the puppy will be small. If you purchase a crate that will fit a full-grown Labrador, place a cardboard box or other makeshift partition to ensure that the puppy has only room to stand up and turn around. If a puppy is given too much room in the crate, it will learn to eliminate in one area and move to another to sleep. Dogs have a natural instinct not to soil where they sleep, so keep the room available to a minimum.

Fold and place a towel into the crate to make the puppy comfortable. In the case of an accident, this towel also makes cleanup easier. If the puppy has an accident on the towel, be sure to wash and bleach the towel to erase all trace of the accident, or the puppy might begin to make a habit of eliminating in the crate.

Dig a 2-foot-deep hole where the ground rod will be located. Put one end of the rod in the hole. Using a hammer pound the rod into the ground, leaving 2 inches of the end of the rod sticking out of the hole. Fill in the hole and connect a ground rod clamp onto the end. Install at least one 6-foot galvanized or copper ground rod into the ground. For best results installing three ground rods 10 feet apart. Connect the rods together with ground rod clamps and 14 gauge insulated wire.

Connect a 14-gauge insulated wire to the "ground" terminal on the fence controller and run it to the ground rod. Slide the wire into the hole in the ground rod clamp and tighten the screw as tight as possible. Use a wrench or pliers to tighten the ground clamp so it bites into the metal of the rod.

Run a fence wire or rope from the "hot" terminal on the fence controller to the closest part of the fencing, tie or bend the wire to connect snugly together. Turn on the electric fence controller.

Measure the length of your chain link fence. Purchase a roll bar or roll tube long enough to cover the entire length of the fence.

Attach brackets large enough to fit the diameter of the roll bar to the top of the fence. The bracket should be at least 1/16 inch larger than the roll bar you are using. Space the brackets approximately six feet apart.

Black Lab Potty Training Tips

Your black labrador retriever will grow up to be one of your best friends, but first you must get over the frustration of potty training. Labrador retrievers are family dogs. They love to be where the people are. Bred to retrieve water fowl, they are also ideal companions for duck hunters. A friendly, easy-going temperament makes these dogs easy to train, and if you stick to some tried and true techniques, your black lab should be potty trained in no time.

Crate Training

Buy a crate large enough for an adult lab (think 70 to 80 lbs.) to stand fully on all fours, turn around and lie down. Purchase a crate divider (or a crate that comes with one) to limit your smaller puppy's space so that it can't use a corner as a bathroom spot. Labrador retrievers avoid soiling where they sleep if they can, so the crate can save you from having to clean up messes when you come home. Hide treats inside and let your puppy get used to the crate before locking it inside. Start by placing the treats at the doorway, where your dog can reach them. Slowly move them further and further back into the crate and tuck them into your lab's bed or blanket. Never use the crate as a punishment, or you will ruin your lab's positive association with the crate.

Use a Leash

Labrador retrievers are energetic and playful. When you begin housetraining, put your puppy on a leash and walk it to the same place in the yard each time you go outside. Say "Go potty."
