Helpful Hints to Keep Your Dog From Growling at People

Helpful Hints to Keep Your Dog From Growling at People

Dogs growl for a variety of reasons, from fear and unease to possessiveness over food or toys. When a dog begins to growl at family, friends or strangers, the concern arises that this reaction may escalate into further aggression. Address this behavior as early as possible on your own or with the help of a specialized trainer.

Understanding the Cause

To stop a dog from growling, first understand his response. Dogs will often emit a sound that resembles growling during active play. "...Some people believe that it must be necessary to get dog training tips prior to getting their pets. Some people could find this interesting but a lot of people could agree that this is a wonderful tip to follow. The problem with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to be cautious of them. In the end, they would depart their pets in order to reestablish their old lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they have got to consider and if they have the time to train their dogs. These guidelines may be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to carry out appropriate dog training, you will delight in a lifetime of peaceful friendship with your ".... The growl-like sound is harmless during this type of play, so long as the rest of his body language is expressing a playful disposition. True growling is a dogs way of expressing his unease, disapproval or his desire to be left alone. It is an assertive reaction caused by a feeling of being threatened. His body will tense and he will likely stare down the threatening party. Often, when the threatening animal or person changes course or moves away, the growling ceases. If the threat continues to advance, the dog may begin to bark or even snap in response.

Unusual Growling

If growling is an uncharacteristic response for your dog, make an appointment with your veterinarian for a medical checkup. Underlying hormonal or neurological changes may have arisen to create a change in behavior.

The Importance of Socialization

Socializing the dog will desensitize him to elements that were previously threatening to him. Go for walks together, visit dog parks and bring your dog to other suitable social functions. If you are concerned she will snap or bite at a person or another animal, start the socializing process with a muzzle. For a dog that is used to frequent isolation, begin socializing slowly with short walks or a few minutes at the park. Increase the frequency and duration of these activities over time and remove the muzzle when you are comfortable with her responses.

Positive Reinforcement

Negative reinforcement can lead to increased aggression in dogs. Do not yank on the dogs chain if he growls in public and never hit or yell at the dog for his behavior. Obedience training is important, but must be carried out in a calm and assertive manner. Use firm voice commands, such as, No and Sit, and reward the dog for his good behavior.

Growling without Additional Signs of Aggression

Try a simple approach to discourage growling. If you neutralize the situation by leaving or having the person leave, you are reinforcing the benefits of growling. Instead, have the advancing person stay put for a moment without advancing any further. Give the dog a moment to calm down and allow him to back away a little if he is attempting to do so. He is retreating from something that is causing fear. These actions will deescalate the threat and he will stop growling. Provide him with a chew toy if he still seems uneasy because the chewing will help to alleviate stress. Wait until he has stopped growling to present the toy so it is not misconstrued as a reward.

How to Teach a Dog the Dance Trick

How to Teach a Dog the Dance Trick

Is your dog a pro at obeying basic commands? If so, you might enjoy teaching it to perform more advanced tricks, such as how to dance. Continuing your dog's training can help you reinforce basic commands. It also stimulates your dog's mind by giving it something new to learn and allows you to spend quality time together. "...Many individuals assume that it must be crucial to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. A number of people may find this interesting but a lot of people could recognize that this is a great tip to follow. The situation with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be aware of them. In the end, they would probably get away from their pets in order to bring back their past lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they need to handle and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These guidelines could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to conduct correct dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... Make training a game and teach your dog how to dance using a positive reinforcement training technique.

Instructions

    1

Ask your dog to sit. Show it that you have treats ready to reward it. This signals to your dog that it is time to focus and train.

    2

Raise a single treat in the air above your dog's nose. Start just an inch or two out of your dog's reach and raise the treat higher into the air. Your dog will attempt to reach the treat by standing on its hind legs.

    3

Say the word "dance." This will be your verbal command. It doesn't know this command at first, so say it as you raise a treat over its head to give it a chance to make the connection.

    4

Move the treat around over the dog's head while it is on its hind legs. It will waddle around on two feet or hop to try and reach the treat. Repeat your "dance" command as it does.

    5

Reward your dog after only a second or two of "dancing." Give it the treat and praise it excitedly. Use the phrase "good dance" to reinforce your command and tell the dog what it did correctly.

    6

Withhold treats for longer and longer periods until you no longer need them to coax your dog to dance. Start by waiting five seconds, then ten, and so on. Remember that there is a limit to your dog's ability to stand on its hind legs. If it drops back to all fours, simply say "dance" again and have it start over. Always praise your dog for dancing when you ask, even if you no longer use dog treats as a reward.

    7

Add music to your dog's routine. Choose a song and play it whenever you practice the "dance" trick. It can make a connection between your command and that particular song. You don't always have to use the same song if your dog can respond to your verbal cue ("dance"), however.

    8

Dance with your dog. This will be fun for both of you, and turns the trick into a game you can play and enjoy together.

How to Get a Dog to Stop Biting & Growling

How to Get a Dog to Stop Biting & Growling

Dogs act aggressively because of fear, insecurity, territorial impulses, frustration, protective instincts, pain or illness. In some cases, aggression is even a learned behavior, and you will need to evaluate your own responses to your dog's attitude to discover the source of his aggression. Unfortunately, "curing" aggression can be one of the more difficult types of behavior modification. "...Lots of individuals assume the reason is necessary to get dog training tips earlier to acquiring their pets. Some individuals may find this exciting but a lot of people might recognize that this is a great tip to follow. The situation with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be cautious of them. In the end, they could get away from their pets in order to retrieve their past lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they should consider and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These hints can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to conduct suitable dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of peaceful a relationship with your ".... It is done through a process known as desensitization and counter-conditioning.

Instructions

    1

Observe your dog closely to find out what is causing his aggressive behavior. Dogs rarely act aggressively just for the fun of it. Your dog's aggression has a specific trigger, and you need to find out what that is. Watch your dog's body language. What makes him stiffen, bristle, growl and bite? What are the circumstances surrounding each incident. Keep a record of these incidents until you see a pattern emerging that will tell you what is causing your dog's aggression.

    2

Ask a friend or family member to help you reproduce the stimulus that triggers your dog's aggression. Put your dog on a leash and stand far enough away from the stimulus that he does not respond aggressively to it. For example, if he is upset by bicycles, ask your friend to ride by repeatedly, just far enough away that your dog won't become aggressive.

    3

Tell your dog to sit and give him rewards when he does so. Use treats and praise to show your dog that remaining calm is a good thing. Repeat step 2, rewarding your dog for staying calm, at least 10 times (separate sessions).

    4

Move closer to the stimulus that triggers your dog's aggression. If your dog gets upset, ask him to sit. Reward him if he does. Keep rewarding him as long as he is calm. Do this for five to 10 minutes at each training session. When your dog stays completely calm at this distance for at least 10 sessions, you can move on.

    5

Take your dog closer and closer to the stimulus as he learns to stay calm. Always reward him for sitting calmly at your side rather than growling or biting. Don't move forward until your dog is consistently calm for at least 10 sessions at each distance.

    6

Remove the stimulus if your dog behaves aggressively and refuses to settle down. Wait a few days before trying again. When you do hold another training session, go back to the previous distance and practice a few more times before moving closer.

How to Teach Tricks to My Pit Bull Dog

How to Teach Tricks to My Pit Bull Dog

Tricks are not a necessary part of training your Pit Bull, however many people choose to teach their dog tricks and Pit Bull owners are no different. A Pit Bull is an intelligent animal and they actually learn quite quickly. The training of a Pit Bull is no different than training any other animal that likes a treat when they do something you want them to do. A Pit Bull will proudly show its tricks, once they have been learned, as long as a treat is involved as a reward.

Instructions

    1

Go into a quiet area with your Pit Bull. This could be a room inside or a quiet backyard. "...Most people believe that it is necessary to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. Many people could find this fascinating but a lot of people could concur that this is a wonderful tip to follow. The challenge with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to take care of them. Finally, they might depart their pets in order to reestablish their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people know what they have to deal with and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These tips will be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to carry out proper dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of comfortable friendship with your ".... There should be no distractions for the dog.

    2

Say the command you want the Pit Bull to learn in a gentle, yet firm voice. Teach the Pit Bull with gentle commands such as sit, stay or roll over.

    3

Show the dog the action you want it to take, regardless of which trick you are attempting to train. Teaching sit would begin with pushing the dog's backside to the ground, just as teaching a dog to lay down would require getting the dog to actually lay down.

    4

Feed the Pit Bull a treat as soon as it begins to do the requested trick at first, not waiting for the trick to be fully completed.

    5

Say the same command again and wait to see if the dog will take the required action on its own. Move the dog into the required position if necessary and again feed the dog a treat.

    6

Perform the same command, action and feeding of the treat repeatedly until the Pit Bull has learned that command before moving on to another trick.
