What Type of Learning is Used in Dog Obedience Training

What Type of Learning is Used in Dog Obedience Training

Two types of learning theory are used in dog training: operant conditioning and classical conditioning. These two styles of learning are used -- sometimes interchangeably and sometimes individually -- to train dogs in everything from basic obedience skills, such as house training, to tasks required for complicated jobs like guiding a visually impaired person or searching for missing people under the rubble after an earthquake. Used correctly, operant and classical conditioning can help a dog go from a wild puppy to a well-behaved companion.

Operant Conditioning

Operant conditioning was invented by B.F. Skinner in the 1950s. Skinner discovered in his experiments that rats would press a bar if they were given a reward immediately after doing so. He called this operant learning. Operant conditioning, the theory of learning that was created out of Skinner's experiments, is based on the theory that behavior can be changed by reinforcing positive behavior and providing a negative consequence for undesirable behavior.

Operant Conditioning in Dog Training

All organisms respond to a stimulus, and the response they receive helps condition them to respond in a certain way in the future. This is Skinner's Stimulus-Response theory. Anything that rewards a behavior will reinforce it. For example, if a dog receives a reward for sitting when given a command to sit (the stimulus), the act of sitting will be reinforced by the reward (the response) and the dog will be more likely to sit when given that command in the future.

Operant conditioning is widely used in dog training because it is simple and highly effective. Even a child can give a treat to a dog when it sits on command. Negative conditioning, or punishment, is no longer considered acceptable in dog training because many regard it as cruel. Recent studies indicate that dogs learn just as effectively from positive reinforcement and that punishment, such as shock collars or hitting the dog, is not necessary.

Classical Conditioning

Classical conditioning was first developed by Ivan Pavlov in the early 1900s. Pavlov discovered that when dogs heard a dinner bell they salivated even before the food was presented because they had been conditioned to associate the bell with food. The theory of classical conditioning was developed from these studies, which teaches animals or people to associate unrelated stimuli with a reward or punishment. After the association is formed, the stimuli becomes a conditioned stimuli.

Classical Conditioning in Dog Training

Classical conditioning is commonly used when training a dog to perform higher level tricks or skills. Guide dog trainers train the animals to respond to environmental stimuli -- such as a "don't walk" sign on a busy street -- by sitting, which helps the owner know when to stop and wait. "...Many individuals consider that it can be essential to get dog training tips earlier to acquiring their pets. Some people might discover this exciting but a lot of people might recognize that this is a top notch tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to take care of them. Finally, they would get away from their pets in order to retrieve their past lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they have to handle and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These suggestions could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to carry out correct dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of peaceful friendship with your ".... Normally, the "don't walk" sign would be meaningless to the dog, or an unconditioned stimulus, but through training the dog learns to associate the "don't walk" sign with sitting. Sitting then becomes a conditioned response. In this way, classical conditioning can teach dogs to respond to environmental stimuli to do a variety of jobs, such as searching for drugs or rescuing drowning swimmers.

How to Train a Brindle Pitbull

How to Train a Brindle Pitbull

Pit bulls are a notoriously misunderstood breed. Yet with the proper care, attention, and training, they can become gentle and wonderful pets. It is best to begin training your pit bull when it is a puppy. At this age, dogs are most impressionable and have yet to learn any bad habits. You can use the information in this article regardless of the coloring of your pit bull. A brindle pit bull, which has markings on its coat, can be trained the same as any other type of pit bull.

Instructions

Establish Your Dominance

    1

Select a training program as soon as you purchase your new pit bull. Follow this program rigorously. The one explained here discusses basic procedures, with a focus on how to maintain owner dominance without confrontation, called a Non-Confrontational Dominance Program. The key concept to this training program is that your pit bull must earn everything it gets. You can implement this practice in all aspects of your dog's life, from food to treats, affection, outdoor privileges, leash training, cleaning, and socializing with owner in human space, like your bed or couch.

    2

Place your new puppy in its crate. This is where house training and the establishment of dominance begins. Establishing dominance early on can be helpful to both dog and owner in cultivating a mutually beneficial relationship.

    3

Ignore whining, barking, or aggressive behavior from your crated pit bull. Crate training is not a punishment, but a dog should not be rewarded for displaying this behavior. Ignore your pit bull's bad behavior until it has calmed down.

    4

Give your calm pit bull affection and positive reinforcement for its good behavior, and remove it from its crate.

    5

Give your pit bull a toy. If your pet growls and guards the toy, remove the toy permanently so that the dog does not learn that it can get what it wants through dominance. Do not engage in confrontation with your dog. You don't want your pit bull to feel it has to defend itself at any point, or aggression may become a habit that is difficult to break. Only provide toys and play time when your pit bull is displaying respect for your authority.

Affirming Your Dominance

    6

Designate a time at which you regularly feed your pit bull. You can gain dominance through controlling when your dog eats, since your pit bull will feel as if it has the upper hand if there is always food in its bowl.

    7

Allow your dog to explore its new environment. At the same time, however, you must control the way your dog interacts with its new home and owner.

    8

Place your pit bull on the floor immediately if it climbs into your lap uninvited. "...Most people consider that it must be necessary to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. Some individuals might find this exciting but a lot of people may recognize that this is a very good tip to follow. The issue with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be aware of them. Finally, they would give up their pets in order to reestablish their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people realize what they should consider and if they have the time to train their dogs. These hints could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to perform correct dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of comfortable companionship with your ".... Ask it to sit, and if it complies, give it the affection it desires. This way you maintain non-confrontational dominance. Only praise your dog when it has earned it. For example, once your dog knows how to sit, only praise it when it complies especially quickly with this command.

How to Train a Dog to Rest at Your Feet

There is nothing more satisfying for many pet owners than having their dogs rest quietly at their feet in different types of social situations. It is important to teach your dog to lie down and stay, and this behavior should be taught early in the dog's life. "...Some people consider that it is essential to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. Lots of people may find this fascinating but a lot of people can recognize that this is a wonderful tip to follow. Tricks to Train a Black Lab Shepherd Mix

Tricks to Train a Black Lab Shepherd Mix

Both black Labradors and German shepherds are known for their guarding, retrieving and hunting abilities and both are highly intelligent working dogs that adapt well but may need extensive training to thrive. Black Lab/shepherd mixed dogs often retain the best qualities of both breeds and look forward to daily exercise and training. The trick to training a black Lab/shepherd mixed dog is to engage the dog's brain through constructive, enjoyable training while also ensuring the dog receives adequate exercise.

Set Boundaries

Black Lab/shepherd mixed dogs often develop overly aggressive biting habits because of both high energy levels and innate retrieving instincts. You must be clear about setting boundaries as to what behavior is acceptable. If the dog bites, remove the dog's mouth from the object and say "No" in a firm voice, walk away from the dog and ignore the dog for 30 seconds. The dog will associate lack of attention from you and will cease biting. In more severe cases of biting, you can also fill a soda can with pennies and shake it when the dog bites in addition to saying "No."

Set Goals

It is important that you develop a training plan that builds on the goals you have for the dog. If you are using the dog for hunting, you need to develop a training plan that focuses on commands that promote safe behavior in the field. For example, you will want to spend extra time teaching the command "leave it." Working dogs love to retrieve things, but they often do not like to release the object.

Daily Exercise

High energy working dogs often engage in destructive behavior simply from having too much excess energy. Daily running, walking and playing games like fetch and Frisbee will go a long way toward helping the dog focus on training.

Positive Reinforcement

Dogs learn through a reward system based on positive reinforcement such as praise and treats. Working dogs such as Lab/shepherd mixes, with their high intelligence and high energy levels, are also known for a high degree of willingness to please and respond particularly well to a reward-based training system. It will take some time for the dog to learn a desired behavior. You can use a technique called "shaping" to promote a desired behavior. "...Many people believe that it must be essential to get dog training tips prior to acquiring their pets. Lots of people might discover this exciting but a lot of people can recognize that this is a top notch tip to follow. The problem with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be cautious of them. Finally, they would probably depart their pets in order to reestablish their old lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they should deal with and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These hints may be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to conduct proper dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of relaxed companionship with your ".... Over time, you will gradually ask more from the dog before rewarding the dog with praise or a treat. You can also use a "clicker" to let the dog know that you are pleased with its behavior by immediately clicking it before you give the dog a treat.

Consistency is Key

You should always use the same commands for each task such as "Sit" and "Stay." All people handling the dog should use the same commands in the same manner. You might also post a list of commands with instructions so that everyone handling the dog has an opportunity to become familiar with the dog's level of training and response to commands.
