How to Crate an Adult Dog

How to Crate an Adult Dog

Old dogs can learn new tricks, including crate training. Training an older dog to use a crate is not much different from training a puppy. For older dogs with behavioral problems, crate training helps curb problematic behavior and provide a routine at bedtime. Crates offer dogs a place of their own to seek refuge or sleep peacefully. Older dogs may be resistant to training and success may follow after a few days or possibly weeks. Be patient and consistent while providing positive reinforcement with treats and verbal praise.

Instructions

Crate Introduction

    1

Place the crate in the part of your home where people spend a lot of time. This prevents the dog from associating the crate with isolation and punishment.

    2

Place the dog's favorite toys or a soft blanket inside the crate.

    3

Introduce the dog to the crate. Older dogs may not be as curious as young dogs, so sit next to the crate and use a positive and enthusiastic tone of voice when speaking to the dog to get him interested.

    4

Leave the crate door open and allow the dog to begin exploring. Do not close the door if he goes inside.

    5

Use treats or toys if the dog has difficulty going inside the crate. Place treats or his favorite toy near the crate and then inside the crate until the dog is able to go completely inside without resistance or anxiety. Entering the crate calmly may take a day or a week depending on the dog's temperament.

Meal Time Inside the Crate

    6

Begin feeding the dog his regular meals inside the crate with the door open. The dog associates the crate with a positive experience.

    7

Place the dog's food in front of the crate if he is showing some resistance. Gradually move the bowl farther back until the dog is eating completely inside the crate. If the dog does not show any resistance, place the bowl of food at the back of the crate from the beginning.

    8

Close the door when the dog is comfortable eating in the crate. Open the crate door immediately after he finishes eating.

    9

Increase the amount of time the dog is inside the crate with the door closed after each meal time until the dog is inside the crate for 10 minutes.

    10

Do not let the dog out of the crate if he begins to whine. Doing so will only teach him that whining gives him what he wants.

Leaving the Dog Alone

    11

Lengthen the time that the dog is in the crate once he is comfortable with eating inside the crate. Give the dog a treat before he enters the crate and close the door. Praise him once he is inside and give him another treat.

    12

Sit next to the crate for five minutes without giving the dog any attention. Leave the room for five minutes, then return and sit next to the crate before letting the dog out. Repeat the process, increasing the time, until the dog stays quietly in the crate for 30 minutes while you are in another room. If he is quiet, then you can move on to the next phase of leaving the house.

    13

Prepare the dog for your departure from the house. Call him to the crate, give him a treat, then give another treat after he is inside the crate.

    14

Do not make a prolonged or elaborate goodbye. Close the gate and leave the house within five to 20 minutes of placing him in the crate.

    15

Quietly and calmly open the crate door when you return home and take the dog to relieve himself. Showing excitement and affection when returning home may cause the dog to become anxious over your return.

Crating Overnight

    16

Place the crate in the same location the dog usually sleeps, whether inside the bedroom or the hallway.

    17

Take the dog to relieve himself before preparing for bed. Repeat the initial procedure of giving the dog a treat before and after entering the crate. Provide a blanket or toy so the dog is comfortable.

    18

After a few nights in one location, it is possible to move the crate to the desired location in the house, such as the kitchen or office.

How to Train a Schipperke Puppy

How to Train a Schipperke Puppy

Nicknamed "Little Captain" for their history of catching rats aboard barges, the Schipperke is a lively, intelligent dog bred down from Belgian black sheepdogs. Schipperkes are known for their vermin-catching and watchdog abilities; they are also agile competitors and loyal companions. This highly intelligent canine is easily bored and can be stubborn for an inexperienced owner. However, if you keep the Schipperke personality and temperament in mind, you can guide and train your puppy into a respectful adult companion.

Instructions

    1

Meet the puppy's daily needs. Due to their intelligence, Schipperkes may become stubborn and disrespectful if you fail to meet their daily needs for mental stimulation and exercise. Before you expect them to obey and respect your wishes, make sure you provide a sufficient dose of stimulating play and outdoor exercise. Taking your Schipperke puppy outside several times a day will also lay the groundwork for effective housebreaking.

    2

Focus on the positive. You can take advantage of your Schipperke's intelligence by rewarding your puppy with affection, praise, and the occasional treat whenever it does something positive. As with many living creatures, punishment can backfire if used excessively.

    3

Take it to the next level. It is your responsibility to keep your Schipperke out of trouble. Some ways to keep your puppy interested and involved in positive activities include daily lessons in novel tricks, agility exercises, games, and a variety of outdoor adventures.

    4

Demand respect. Your Schipperke will not listen to your commands unless you are consistent and authoritative. Any time you let your puppy have the upper hand, you are taking a step backwards in the training process. Remember to be respectful and positive, but commanding and strong at the same time.

    5

Be patient. Schipperkes reach their learning potential peak around the age of eighteen months; before that time, exercise extra patience and tolerance when your puppy is slow to catch on. "...Lots of individuals assume that it can be essential to get dog training tips prior to having their pets. Some people might discover this fascinating but a lot of people might agree that this is a very good tip to follow. The challenge with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be cautious of them. Free Instructions for Crate Training a Puppy

Crate training is an effective way to teach your puppy where to eliminate while providing him with a secure environment at the same time. "...Many people consider that it must be essential to get dog training tips prior to acquiring their pets. Many people could find this interesting but a lot of people can concur that this is a very good tip to follow. The problem with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be aware of them. In the end, they could get away from their pets in order to bring back their past lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they have got to take care of and if they have the time to teach their dogs. These suggestions can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to conduct suitable dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of comfortable a relationship with your ".... Dogs have a denning instinct that drives them to seek safe, confined spaces, and a crate fills that role. Your puppy will not want to soil his crate, so by confining him to his crate for short periods you will help train him to wait until he is outside to go to the bathroom.

Instructions

    1

Choose a crate that is durable and is large enough that your puppy can stand up and turn around, even when she gets to adult size. Crates are available in portable plastic models and wire crates that are designed to remain in one part of your home. As long as it is the correct size and allows adequate ventilation, it is suitable for crate training.

    2

Introduce your puppy to the crate by opening it and encouraging him to go inside. If the puppy doesn't want to go in, do not force him. Just leave the door open so the puppy can go in and investigate when he feels safe.

    3

Feed your puppy near the crate. This way, the puppy will associate the crate with food, which will make her feel positive about the crate.

    4

Place the food inside the crate near the back so the puppy will have to go inside to eat after it becomes comfortable with eating near the crate. If she won't go inside, take the food out again and try again the next time you feed the puppy.

    5

Close the door on the crate the next time you feed the puppy in the crate. Gradually increase the amount of time the dog spends in the crate until he is able to stay inside for an hour without whining.

    6

Crate the dog the next time you leave the house for a few minutes. Only use this for short time periods during the day, or the puppy may become anxious and eliminate in the crate.

    7

Put the puppy in the crate at night when she becomes comfortable with being in the crate while you are gone.

Agility Teeter Specifications

Agility Teeter Specifications

Dog agility training is a sport that humans and dogs participate in together. "...Lots of individuals think that it is crucial to get dog training tips earlier to acquiring their pets. A number of people might find this interesting but a lot of people may concur that this is a top notch tip to follow. The issue with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are simply not suitable to take care of them. Eventually, they would get away from their pets in order to retrieve their old lives. These dog training tips can let people find out what they have got to deal with and if they have the time to educate their dogs. These suggestions could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to execute correct dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... The human teaches the dog to run through, around and over obstacles. An agility course contains hurdles, slalom poles, raised planks, both open and closed tunnels, a "wait" table that requires the dog to pause for 5 seconds and teeter totters. Speed is not the only issue. The dog can lose points for inadvertently touching obstacles such as the hurdles. A dog can also lose points by missing an obstacle, such as running past a pole.

Dog Agility Teeter

The agility teeter is used as one of the obstacles in dog agility competition. Similar to a child's playground teeter totter, a dog agility teeter consists of a plank on a fulcrum. At the command from the human, the dog approaches the teeter. The animal walks up the lowered side of the plank and stops upon reaching the fulcrum. The dog is then required to wait until the plank shifts before it walks down the other side.

Competitive Requirements

The American Kennel Club and Dogs On Course, a dog agility organization, have set standards for dog agility competition. An agility dog teeter must be 12 feet long and one foot wide. The plank must be strong enough to support large dogs. The plank must be balanced equally so that even small dogs can change the pivot. The underside of the ends should be padded so that the dog is not frightened by the sound of the plank hitting the ground. The fulcrum must extend from the center at least one inch on both sides of the plank. This helps the dog find the pivot point. Both ends of the plank must be painted a contrasting color from the center so that the dog can identify them. The entire plank must be coated in a weather resistant paint and coated with a non-skid surface.

How the Agility Teeter Is Scored

The agility team loses points if the dog leaps from the side of the plank. The team also loses points if the dog runs off the plank before the teeter comes to a stop on the ground. Of course, time is of the essence, so the dog must learn to use its weight to change the position of plank quickly.

Other Agility Teeter Considerations

There are many dog agility teeters on the market. Some have slats that help the animal walk up and down the slope. Some competitions allow slats, while others don't. But both the AKC and Dogs on Course recommend using a teeter with slats for early training. There are also different size teeters available. Like the slats, shorter planks are excellent for early training. However, only a 12-foot plank is allowed in competition.

How to Stop a Dog From Pulling Away While on a Leash

How to Stop a Dog From Pulling Away While on a Leash

Taking your dog for a walk is one of the biggest pleasures of dog ownership. It also provides an excellent opportunity to exercise and train your dog. It is normal for dogs to want to rush off and explore all of the smells and sights of the outside world, but constant pulling is not acceptable and can discourage you from taking your dog on walks. You can correct this unwanted behavior by helping the dog learn that pulling on the leash results in negative consequences.

Instructions

    1

Teach the dog your command. When you want to influence your dog's behavior, the easiest way to do this is with a verbal command. Before you go for your next walk, spend some time building an association in your dog's brain between your chosen command and the consequences of obeying. A common word to instruct a dog to stop pulling on the leash is "heel." It's good because it has one syllable and doesn't sound like other common commands. During a play session, wait until the dog is distracted from you and issue the command. If the dog doesn't respond, wait a few seconds before repeating. As soon as the dog responds by looking at you or by approaching you, issue a reward. The reward can be food, a toy or touch. Pick whichever reward your dog responds to best. This teaches the dog that the action of looking at you in response to the command has positive results.

Put a short leash on the dog. Begin with a short leash so that you have more control over your dog's movement. Walk in a loop around the garden or house. Once you finish a loop, change direction. If the dog pulls, stop walking and issue your command. Only reward the dog if he approaches. If he looks but doesn't approach, coax him to you. You're teaching the dog that pulling has a negative consequence, but being close has a positive consequence.

    3

Increase the amount of time you stop the walk for. Whenever the dog pulls, stand and wait until the dog is at your side before continuing. As you increase the amount of time, the dog will learn that the action of pulling results in an interruption to the walk. The walk is a positive element of the dog's current experience and by stopping, you are showing the dog the you can remove that positivity.

Extend the length of the leash. Once the dog begins to learn the command, you can give her more freedom. Repeat the command each time she pulls, but only issue the reward when she approaches.

    5

Reinforce good behavior. During your walk, take every opportunity to reinforce good leash walking with a reward. This way you're not just correcting bad behavior, but encouraging good behavior. "...Many individuals think that it must be crucial to get dog training tips preceding to getting their pets. Many people may find this exciting but a lot of people may concur that this is a very good tip to follow. The situation with a number of pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to be aware of them. In the end, they might give up their pets in order to bring back their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people understand what they have to handle and if they have the time to train their dogs. These guidelines can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By using the time to perform proper dog training, you will take pleasure in a lifetime of peaceful a relationship with your ".... Wait until your dog walks alongside you, issue the command and then issue the reward. The dog won't know that you're responding to his action, he'll simply make the association between the command, his current action and the positive outcome. The order in which the association is reinforced doesn't matter at this stage.
