You may underestimate the volume of your whistling since you can't hear it, and whistling too loud can be painful to your dog. K9 Obstacle Course Specifications

The U.S. Police Canine Association (USPCA) oversees police dog certification through a series of trials. The trials are made up of four sections -- Obedience, Agility, Evidence & Suspect Search, and Criminal Apprehension. The agility test is made up of an obstacle course comprised of five specific obstacles. The owners of working dogs and dog groups use USPCA specifications to build their own obstacle courses and hold trials.

The dog must jump four of six types of hurdles on command. All the hurdles are 3 feet high and 4 feet wide and are spaced 16 feet apart in a straight line. Hurdle types are picket fence painted white, chain link fence, simulated brick wall, shrub jump painted green and board jump painted white all to be scaled, and a window 30-by-30 inches for jumping through. The dog must start within 15 feet of the first obstacle and the handler may accompany him as far as just before the second hurdle.

The catwalk or ladder climb is a 24-inch-wide platform with a ladder for access placed at a 25- to 30- degree angle. The ladder may only have five steps, each to be 12 inches apart and 2-by-4 inches by 24 inches wide. The platform must be 6 feet above the ground and 8 feet in length. The dismount ramp must be 10 feet long and 24 inches wide. The dog must climb the ladder and stop in the center of the platform and wait for his handler's command before dismounting and returning to the handler.

A series of 5-foot-wide boards are placed one behind the other at a height starting at 6 inches and graduating to 12 inches above the ground to cover a total distance of 6 feet. Upon the handler's command the dog must jump over all boards together and return to his handler.

The A-frame is a solid wall 6 feet high and 4 feet wide with the sides spread 4 feet at the bottom. This obstacle must have a catch platform 3 feet high on the dismount side to help avoid injury to the dog. The dog must jump to the top of the obstacle, dismount, and return to his handler's side on command.

The crawl obstacle is 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 16 inches high. The front and back are open and the sides are made of chain link fencing. A 4-by-8 sheet of plywood covers the top. The dog must crawl through the obstacle and return to his handler upon command.

What if a Dog Tries to Bite You When You Put Him in the Cage?

When Good Dog Charles turns into Cujo the moment you try to put him in the cage, he's communicating his feelings the best way he knows. Until your dog is capable of expressing his thoughts and emotions verbally, it's your job to interpret why he's rebelling against being put in his security den, then condition him to overcome.

If your canine companion turns snappy the moment you put him in the cage, you might not be sure how to proceed. For starters, you want to avoid punishing your dog. Doing so may cause more harm than good. Your primary course of action in the moment is to do what you can to protect yourself and safely back off. Try to stay calm and move slowly without making eye contact. Afterward, take a deep breath and start analyzing the dynamics behind the behavior.

Determine exactly what is triggering your dog's defensive behavior. In some cases, dogs don't like being grabbed by the collar. If you are grabbing your pooch by the collar every time you need to put him in the cage, consider that about 20 percent of bites occur when somebody reaches out to grab the dog by the scruff or collar, veterinarian and trainer Ian Dunbar writes in the book Before & After Getting Your Puppy.

Analyze your dog's feelings toward the cage. In some cases, dogs don't ultimately mind being taken by the collar until it becomes a cue predicting that he's about to be closed in the cage. Some dogs who have never gotten used to being in a cage may dislike being caged and may get nervous or stressed as a result. If your dog is reluctant to go inside and you are forced to push or pull him, most likely he was never given the opportunity to form positive associations with the cage.

If your dog has always been comfortable being caged but he suddenly becomes defensive, try to identify the presence of any threatening stimuli or situations he may be exposed to when caged. Perhaps the cage is placed in an area that's too warm or too cold or near a draft. It could also be he's exposed to scary noises such as a dishwasher or washing machine. He may dread the cage because he has been caged as a form of punishment.

Change your dog's hard feelings toward the cage using food and treats to classically condition him to associate the cage with good things. You want your dog to look forward to staying in the crate. You accomplish this gradually, by keeping the cage open and placing treats, toys or his food bowl close to the crate's entrance. Transition to feeding inside the crate. Once he's comfortable inside, you'll begin to train him to stay there by closing the door for periods that grow in length. Alternatively, you'd crate-train a pup from an early age, confining him for no more than two hours at first and working up to eight hours over the course of several weeks. This form of crate-training normally results in dogs who see their crate as a good thing, not a source of anxiety or aggression.

Train your dog to go inside the cage on his own by saying, "Kennel up," and then tossing a treat inside the cage. Your dog will readily go inside if you are using high-value treats and have worked for some time on changing his emotions about the cage. If your dog still won't step inside, don't try to push, lift or otherwise coax him. This will exacerbate his fear and stress, and may cause him to bite again. In this case, you may need to find a pet behavioral professional and an alternative enclosure.

Use a different type of enclosure if your dog gets too stressed by the cage. It could be he was over-crated in the past, has never been caged before or was traumatized by some event in which a cage was an element. Some dogs simply don't like to be locked up in small spaces; they do better being enclosed in an exercise pen, chain-link kennel or small room. How to Break a Dog From Barking Every Time We Leave the House

Your dog loves to get attention, and as a dog owner, you probably love giving it to your dog, particularly if it has a habit of barking every time you leave the house. When it barks, your dog may be telling you, and anyone else who's listening, that it wants attention. When you're home, your dog gets all the attention it can handle, but when you leave, it gets no attention and often results in the dog barking. Several solutions exist that can help your dog to stop barking whenever you leave your house.

Instructions

Make sure your dog has the basic essentials of food, water and a quiet place to sleep. Don't leave your dog outside when you're not home. Bring it inside, and make sure it has a spot to go away from distracting windows and other pets.

Pay little attention to your dog when you leave your house. Tell it goodbye about 10 minutes before you actually leave. Repeatedly petting your dog and talking in a soothing voice will make it bark even more once you're gone.

Avoid an excited greeting when you return home. This will reinforce the idea that being left alone is not a big deal for your dog. Don't greet your dog until you've been home for about 10 minutes, which also gives it some time to calm down before you show it some attention.

Try not to praise and pet your dog for no reason for the time being. If your dog is barking while you're gone, then you need to limit the attention it gets while you're there. Always praise your dog for responding correctly to a command, but don't overdo it. Over time, your dog will be able to sit and stay in all situations. Then, you can bump up the praise and give it more attention.

Give your dog something to do. This works when you're home and when you're not. When you're home, give it a chew toy or treat. While your dog plays and chews the toy or treat, leave the room. Return a few minutes later. Stay calm and don't greet your dog. The idea is to show your dog that being separated from you is not a big deal, so it shouldn't get excited or upset.
