Teaching your puppy to relieve itself when and where you would like it to, usually outside, can be a long process. Some puppies will learn fast, but others may still have accidents when they are 1 to 2 years old. Learn Your Puppy's Body Language

While dogs may be man's best friend, service dogs can be an invaluable aid for people with disabilities. Hearing service dogs assist their owners by notifying them of situations that they may not be able to detect on their own. Hearing dogs can alert their owners to anything from a ringing telephone to a fire alarm. Service dogs receive specialized training and learn to respond to a variety of instances to suit their owners needs. Hearing dogs learn sign language commands and are taught to lead their owners to specific places according to the noise that they are detecting. You can learn to train a dog to become a certified service dog.

    Consider the type of dog. Training any dog is challenging, but a service dog needs more disciplined training as their responsibilities are greater. Puppies are fun to bring home but new owners often do not realize how lonely and upset a puppy can become at night, when away from its siblings and mother. It is important to establish a nightly routine with the new puppy, so that it feels comfortable and safe in the new environment. If this is the puppy's first night away from her mother, you should expect some whining and confusion as she adjusts to her new environment and schedule.

    Take your puppy for an evening walk and play with the puppy after the walk. This will give the puppy exercise and allow the puppy time to eliminate its wastes before going to bed for the night.

    Remove food from the puppy's area, around two hours before bed. If the puppy does not eat before bed, she will likely not have to go outside during the night as much as a puppy that eats before bedtime.

    Allow the puppy to learn your smell. Hold him, play with him and give him one of your shirts to sniff. Place an old shirt that you have worn in his box or crate, so there is something that has a familiar smell on it.

    Place a large cardboard box by your bed and some old clothes in it for the puppy to snuggle in and use for bedding. This will allow the puppy to become familiar with your home and not feel lonely as you sleep. If the puppy to whines at night, immediately take it out to ensure that it can go to the bathroom.

    Crate the puppy overnight if you are not comfortable with it sleeping in a box by your bed. Create an inviting environment in the crate where the puppy will sleep. Place a stuffed toy in the crate for the puppy to play with and snuggle. Place some old clothes in the crate for the puppy to use as bedding. A bone and a treat will also be good ways to entice the puppy to stay in the crate.

    Create a comfortable environment in a different room for the puppy, if you do not want it to sleep in a crate or in a box by your bed. Arrange old blankets and old clothes on the floor for the puppy's bedding. Place a few treats in the bed for the puppy to snack on and give the puppy a toy.

Your dog and your cat don't have to be enemies, especially if your kitten grows up with your dog. An overly excited or energetic dog can be intimidating for a kitten, however, and can even be a danger to it if it tries to play roughly or chase and "hunt" the kitten. To encourage friendly interaction between the two, make their initial meetings as calm and rewarding as possible.

    Practice your dog's basic obedience skills before bringing the kitten home. Try to plan far enough in advance to spend one or two months brushing up on commands such as "down," "sit," "leave it" and "come." These commands are your most valuable tool for keeping an excitable dog calm around a new kitten. Hold training sessions every day and always reward your dog for obeying the command.

    Confine your new kitten to a single room during its first few days at home, using a baby gate across the room's door. Take it out into the rest of the house only when your dog is outside. Provide food, water and a litter box for your kitten. This confinement will give it time to adjust to its new surroundings in peace, while keeping it from being overwhelmed by the size of your home. It also will give you the ability to supervise all interaction between your dog and your kitten, and prevent accidental (and unsupervised) encounters.
