Be assertive, yet calm and positive. You must be assertive because pugs are a very stubborn breed. However, you need to stay calm and keep a positive tone in your voice because, as reported by The Daily Puppy, they are also very sensitive, especially to the tone of your voice.
2Purchase a crate for your pug. For Pug's Sake recommends crate training as a precursor to potty training. Getting a pug used to going in and out of a crate at your command will make potty training easier. Take a treat and put it in the crate. Say "crate" and instruct the pup to go inside. Eventually, the pup will learn to associate the crate with reward and will enter the crate willingly at your command.
3Monitor your puppy frequently if you want to prevent accidents. Before the pup is potty trained, they have very little control over their bladder functions until they are about six months old.
4Say "No" about an accident only when you see them in the act, and do not yell at the puppy. Just give a firm "No," and then take the pup outside. Do not retroactively scold a pup about peeing or pooping in the house. The pug will not understand what you are talking about, even if you use the old method of rubbing their nose in it. Sensitive pugs will just become afraid of you in the process, and it will make the process that much more difficult.
5Take the pug outside to go to the bathroom in the morning, after meals and before bed or whenever you release the pug from its crate. Try to communicate with the dog by saying "Go potty." Stay out there for a bit, and give them a chance to go.
