How to Teach a Dog on a Snout Leash

A snout leash (also known as a head halter or a canny collar) is a training aid to stop a dog pulling on his lead. According to site Dog Time, the device is made up of two straps; one strap goes around the back of the dog's head while the other goes around its snout. A normal leash is then attached to the device. When you pull the leash, the dog's head is pulled either to the side or down and it can't pull back. You can teach your dog to walk beside you using the leash.

Instructions

    1

However, in general you should fasten the thick part of the collar around your dog's neck, with the buckle at the back of the head. Ensure it can't come off by facing your dog and tugging it gently. When you are satisfied that it's there to stay, pull the two head straps around the back of the dogs head and attach it to your normal leash. Then put the small muzzle strap, known as a slip line, over the dog's snout, ensuring that it is kept in place by its plastic guider. You're ready for your walk.

    2

Keep your leash short but lose when walking to ensure that you can control the dog. Extendable leashes are not appropriate for this exercise as, according to leash manufacturer Canny Collar, a long lead may dislodge the slip line.

    3

Pull back gently but firmly on the leash when your dog starts to pull away. When he stops pulling, release the pressure and continue walking normally. During these training exercises your dog will learn to restrain himself and not pull forward. If you're dog is walking at your side, reward him by loosening the leash. The aim of the exercise is to train your dog to a level whereby he can go back to using a normal leash.
