How to Use a Leading Leash on a Puppy

Leading leashes are designed to teach dogs that pull at their leashes to stop. Some leading leashes wrap around a dog's muzzle, which will not allow them to pull because if they try, their heads will simply be pulled around toward the handler. Others have elastic bands that will tighten gradually to stop the leash from jarring the puppy when it pulls, both absorbing the shock and teaching the puppy not to pull. Consider choosing a leading leash for your puppy once it has become used to wearing a regular collar, but still pulls on the leash too much.

Instructions

Choose the leading leash that you are most comfortable with. Select one that wraps around the dog's muzzle, its chest or a simple leash that contains an elastic band.

Put the leading leash on the puppy and help it get used to wearing it. This is more important if you selected a leading leash that wraps around the puppy's muzzle or chest. The puppy might not like the leash at first, but if you put it on when he is in a playful mood, it can distract him. He might try to scratch it off, but it's important that you leave it on until he forgets about it.

Repeat the process of letting the puppy practice wearing the leading leash until he no longer minds when you put it on him.

Pick up the end of the leash and begin walking with the puppy. Leading leashes are designed to stop the dog from pulling without causing it pain. Continue walking with the leader leash until the puppy no longer even tries to pull.

Switch to a regular leash after you no longer need the leading leash.
