How to Train My English Springer Spaniel

The English Springer Spaniel is the founder of all English spaniels. The name comes from the dog's distinctive way of springing forward to flush out game from a bush or hedge. The springer is primarily a hunting dog, so it needs plenty of exercise. These days, the dog is better known as a family pet. They are affectionate, intelligent and quick to learn. Springer spaniels love to be with people and make suitable family pets. However, you need to channel all this intelligence and energy while your puppy is still young.

Instructions

Spend a lot of time with your puppy. This is a breed that is sociable and does not enjoy being on its own. Begin training it as soon as possible. Toilet train it by taking it outside regularly: after waking, and each hour during the day. Take it to a particular place, and use a particular word, such as "Toilet." praise the puppy when it does what you require. You will have the odd accident. Protect your floor and do not punish the dog for this.

Teach your dog a range of words, such as "Down," "Stop" and "Come here." Praise the puppy when it responds appropriately. Use repetition, and be consistent and calm when training your dog. Use grooming time to bond with your spaniel. The springer loves to get wet and dirty, so you will need to brush its coat daily. Clean and check its ears regularly, as this breed is prone to ear problems.

Train your puppy to go on the leash for walks. Put a light weight collar on and leave it until the puppy forgets about it. Do this several times. Attach a leash and just let the puppy trail the leash for a while. When it is used to the leash, take the other end and begin training your dog to walk calmly on the leash. Talk softly to it. If it begins to pull or strain, stop walking. This lets the dog know that pulling does not get it anywhere.
