How to Make a Dog Quit Barking with a Noise Generator

Dogs bark as their way of communicating, but excessive barking can be upsetting. Barking is manageable through training and through the use of noise-generating devices. The least expensive noisemaker to stop your dog from barking is a soda can with pebbles in it. Noise generators may be more or less sophisticated, and may make a noise you can hear or emit sounds audible to dogs only. These devices emit sounds that irritate the dog and make it stop barking.

Instructions

Place the noise generator on a flat surface in your yard or home, and ensure there are no trees, fences or other objects that will obstruct it and block its sound. The device emits a sound that, depending on which one you buy, may or may not be audible to you. Certain high-pitched noises produced by ultrasonic devices are only audible to dogs. Dogs have a wider hearing range and hear noises up to 45 kHz, while people perceive sounds only up to about 23 kHz.

Turn on the device as soon as you hear your dog barking. Certain devices have sensors that trigger a sound in response when the dog starts barking. For your convenience, opt for a device that doesn't have to be turned on each time the dog barks so that even if you are not present, the dog still gets the sound treatment.

Monitor your dog's reaction and see if the barking stops or diminishes. If the noise-generating device works, you should notice results within three days of installation.
