Introduce the hoop into your dog's environment. Lie the hoop flat on the ground, and allow your Westie to sniff it. Encourage him to walk over it to get him used to stepping over the hoop edge. Place a special treat, such as a small piece of cheese or chicken, in the center of the hoop to tempt the dog if he appears reluctant or uninterested.

    2

Take your dog to a quiet area where you can practice hoop training without distractions. Ask your dog to sit and stay. Stand the hoop upright so it is still touching the ground, and place it between you and the dog. Produce a treat, and encourage your dog to come to you through by walking through the hoop to get the treat. Avoid rewarding the dog with the treat if he walks around the outside of the hoop to get to you. Introduce a command word, such as jump or hoop, as the Westie passes through the hoop. Reward the dog by allowing him to take the treat. Give lots of praise. Repeat the exercise regularly until the Westie manages to associate the command word with the action of passing through the hoop.

    3

Lift the hoop off the ground slightly, and give the command to jump through it. Reward your Westie with a treat and lots of praise when he jumps through the hoop. Repeat the process regularly. Progress by gradually lifting the hoop higher. Avoid lifting the hoop higher than the dog is able to jump.
