Instructions

Sit or stand near your dog. Let your dog know you have a treat, but do not give it to the dog.

Command your dog to "lie down," while lowering a treat to the floor. Your dog may be sitting or standing. Use an assertive but not harsh voice.

Wait for the dog to lower itself all the way to the floor. When this happens, hold the treat between its front paws.

Praise is important when training your dog to lie down.

Give your dog the treat and praise it. Pat your dog and use vocal praise. Once your dog has mastered the "lie down" command, practice it in different areas of your home as well as outside.

Command your dog to stay while the dog is lying down. Put the palm of your hand in front of its face while saying, "stay." Wait for five seconds, then say, "Ok" or choose another word as your command to release the dog. Praise the dog and give it a treat. Once your dog has mastered the "stay" command for a few seconds, you can increase the time your dog stays.
