Not all dogs are social butterflies. While many dogs do enjoy being around people, some are shy or fearful of people. This type of behavior is due to many things including breed characteristics, abuse and temperament. However, by socializing your dog correctly, you can show your dog that there is nothing to be afraid of.

Incorporate socialization into your dog's life at an early age. Whether you take your dog for walks in the park or have friends come over, socialize your dog as soon as possible. Let strangers talk to your dog and pet it at the park. Encourage good behavior around other people with vocal praise and treats. Socialize your dog on a daily basis.
2Get your dog into a training program. Obedience schools and other training programs encourage socialization with other dogs and strangers and are ideal for puppies and older dogs. These programs teach dogs how to interact with others in a respectful manner. Biting, barking and aggressive behaviors are discouraged in obedience programs.
3Observe how you act around your dog. Your own actions often rub off on your dog. Do not become anxious when you take your dog on walks or have people over. Your dog may sense your anxiety and act the same way. Remain calm around other people.
4Introduce new people to older dogs slowly. People must gain the trust of an older dog. Have the same person come over several times a week. Let your dog sniff around this person at each visit. Ask the person to offer treats to your dog. Once your dog feels comfortable, encourage your visitor to pet it on the head and the shoulders. The person should speak in a soft, soothing voice. Continue this routine until your dog feels comfortable around this person. Repeat this routine with other friends and family members until the dog is comfortable with everyone.
