How to Train with a Shock Collar

Shock collars are also known as remote training collars or electronic collars. They emit an electric discharge that is controlled by remote control as a way of correcting bad canine behavior. The practice of using shock collars for training dogs is controversial, with many groups calling the method cruel while advocates state the collar is effective and causes no harm when used correctly. Training a dog with a shock collar needs to be done carefully.

Instructions

    1

Establish the minimum amount of charge that the dog reacts to. Start the remote on the lowest setting and slowly increase the amount of discharge until the dog reacts in some way. The reaction may be subtle such as a twitch of the ear or a slight shake of the head. Stop there and keep that level as the base charge in training. You want to use the least amount of electric charge possible.

    2

Activate the collar when the dog starts an activity that is not permitted. For example, if the dog is not allowed on the couch, activate the collar anytime it jumps on the couch and turn the charge off as soon as it jumps down again. The dog will then associate the couch with the shock and will stay away from it. Even when you are not around, it is effective because the dog associates the couch with the shock and not the owner.

    3

Give the dog verbal commands. Activate the collar when the commands are not followed. Once the dog is clear on what "sit" means, it should sit whenever it is told. "...Some people consider that it must be necessary to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. Some people might discover this interesting but a lot of people could concur that this is a top notch tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they can be not suitable to take care of them. Ultimately, they would probably get away from their pets in order to retrieve their old lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they should consider and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These guidelines could be found on Secrets To Dog Training. By taking the time to carry out proper dog training, you will enjoy a lifetime of relaxed a relationship with your ".... If it doesn't, activate the collar and repeat the command, turning the charge off as soon as it sits down.

    4

Keep the collar on the dog during the day. If the collar is taken off a lot or only used for corrective purposes, the dog will associate the shocks with the collar and will likely resume bad behavior whenever the collar is not on. Take the collar off at night when the dog is about to sleep.

    5

Use positive reinforcements when the dog does something right. Reward it with treats and praise when it follows commands and does what it is supposed to do. This will both reinforce the positive behavior, but also help the dog associate you with positive experiences and not just punishments.
