How to Proof the Sit in Dog Training

Proofing behaviors are one way to do some advanced training work with your dog. By using proofing behaviors, you can reinforce simple commands that your dog is already familiar with, such as how to sit. The proof technique in dog training is effective at finding out if your dog actually knows the command. However, you don't have to be a dog training expert to put the sit proof to work.

Instructions

Try using the "sit" command with your dog. If your dog sits when you tell him to, then you know he's learned it.

Give a treat or praise him each time your dog sits to the proper command.

Say a word that sounds similar to sit, such as "hit" or "ship." If your dog sits, do not give it a treat. In fact, ignore the dog completely or walk away.

Command your dog to sit again. Reward with a treat if the command is followed.

Continue this exercise until your dog only sits when you say "sit," and not a similar word.

Try the same exercise -- only this time, change your position. Your dog may only sit, if you're standing. To proof the behavior, continue commanding "sit" in various positions, such as sitting in a chair, lying down, or turned around.
