How to Keep Dogs From Taking Slippers

Dogs may sometimes steal various things, including food and objects in the house. Your dog likes to take your slippers and shoes because they have the owner's scent, and may also like to chew on them. This behavior may be due to the fact that your pet is lonely or bored and it wants to grab your attention. Even if your pet doesn't chew your slippers and only carries them away, it's annoying when you cannot find them, or when you find them and they are full of dog drool. You can find means of making your dog stay away from your slippers.

Instructions

    1

Keep your slippers locked in a room or a closet while you are not wearing them. In this manner you remove the temptation. Remove clothes from the rooms the dog has access to, so that it won't chew on these.

    2

Give your pet chew toys, which occupy the dog's time. The dog will spend its energy on chewing these toys and won't be bored, so it won't try to find other means of spending its time and energy.

    3

Spread cayenne pepper or bitter apple spray on your slippers if you are unable to hide your slippers. Both solutions are a powerful repellent dogs don't like. Alternatively, use commercial repellents. The dog may take your slippers, but it will not like the taste and odor of the repellent and is likely to avoid taking your slippers in the future. Ensure the solution you use is not toxic for your dog.

    4

Make a sharp noise if you notice your dog running off with your slippers. Your dog may be startled and may learn over time that taking your slippers results in the unbearable noise. This method works only if you can constantly monitor your pet and are able to make the same noise whenever your dog takes your slippers.

    5

Make time to play with your dog. If your dog is bored and doesn't spend its energy, it will look for means of grabbing your attention.

    6

Teach your dog to respond to commands such as "Leave it." Show your dog what you expect it to do when you use this command and train it at least 5 minutes per day. Reward your dog with treats when it performs according to your commands.
