Many dogs feel the urge to escape from a yard to explore the world around them. This habit can be dangerous to the dog's health because it leads to an increased risk of injury through fights with other dogs and being hit by a car. Training your dog not to jump the yard wall or escape by other means is an important thing to teach from the beginning.

    Avoid excessive punishment when the dog returns to the yard. If the dog is punished at this time it does not associate the punishment with the act of leaving the yard. It will develop a sense of fear of being in the yard and will not wish to remain in the yard when left alone.


    Make sure your dog is not bored and make sure he is getting enough exercise. Dogs that are not mentally stimulated or if they feel they are confined in the yard will feel the desire to run freely and explore the world around them. Take your dog out for regular walks and enjoy daily play time.


    Remove any physical means the dog may be using to facilitate future escape. Avoid storing debris near the wall. Check for any patches or cracks where the dog can sneak through. Watch for doors and gates that aren't closed securely.
