How to Prevent Dogs From Running Up & Down the Fence

Dogs can run up and down a fence line for multiple reasons -- the most common are marking territory or wanting to play with the neighbor dogs or those dogs walking by. Dogs show dominance to other humans or dogs by running up and down their yard. Often this behavior is accompanied by loud barking. A dog may simply want to play with fellow passerby's and feel confined by their physical barrier -- the fence. This, however, creates frustration for the dog and can turn to violent behavior if not properly addressed and treated.

Instructions

    1

Stay outside to keep an eye on your dog. When the running occurs, call the dog to come inside or stop. The barking can be irritating for your neighbors and could cause complaints.

    2

Keep the dog on a tie out. A tie out can keep the dog away from the fence. You should place the dog on a tie out every time they are outside. It is possible that the dog can eventually be let off of the tie out; they may become bored with running up and down the fence.

    3

Reward the dog for good behavior. Give the dog small treats and praise for a job well done when they do not run up and down the fence while outside.

    4

Keep the dog engaged. Running up and down the fence line is common for dogs that are experiencing boredom. Play with your dog as often as possible, and keep them active by taking walks, throwing a tennis ball and learning new tricks.

    5

Create a physical barrier between the fence and the dog. A barrier can help salvage your yard since the running wears down grass and leaves unsightly landscaping. Use concrete pathway bricks or gravel.

A physical barrier is important if the dog is exhibiting aggressive behavior when running up and down the fence. The dog could dig their way out and hurt another animal or human. The ground under the fence can be filled in with concrete or packed gravel.

    6

Obstruct their view. This can be difficult if you have a chain line fence. In this case, it is best to move them to another section of the yard. If possible, build a visual obstruction such as a wall or another fence. This creates a fence within a fence and the dog will not be able to see out.
